The Potential of Gadolinium Ascorbate Nanoparticles as a Safer Contrast Agent

There have been health concerns raised against the use of gadolinium (Gd)-based magnetic resonance imaging contrast agents. The primary observation is that Gd ions are prone to leaking into the bloodstream, causing nephrogenic systemic fibrosis as one of the side effects. In addition, such leakage of the ions inhibits easy clearance from the body. Herein we propose that Gd-ascorbate nanoparticles could be one of the safer choices as they are rather stable in aqueous dispersion and they do not get affected by Zn or Fe ions in the medium. The magnetic properties of the ions are preserved in the nanoparticles, and particles when sufficiently small may be amenable to renal clearance from the human body. Thus, when an aqueous solution of Gd-acetate and ascorbic acid was left to evolve with time, a Gd-ascorbate complex was formed that led to the formation of nanoparticles with time. The sizes of the nanoparticles increased with time, and when the particles were sufficiently large, they precipitated out of the medium. In addition, smaller nanoparticles were consistently present at all times of observations. UV-vis, photoluminescence and FTIR spectroscopy, mass spectrometry, and transmission electron microscopy analyses confirmed the formation of nanoparticles of Gd-ascorbate complex. In addition, magnetic measurements confirmed the high relaxivity of the nanoparticles as compared to the parent salt, indicating the effectiveness of the nanoparticles as contrast agents. Density functional theory-based calculations of the molecular complex-based nanoparticles accounted for the experimental observations.

A family of nanoclusters, [Ln₃₃(EDTA)₁₂(OAc)₂(CO₃)₄(μ₃-OH)₃₆(μ₅-OH)₄(H₂O)₃₈]·OAc·xH₂O (x ≈ 50, Ln = Sm for 1; x ≈ 70, Ln = Eu for 2) and [Gd₃₂(EDTA)₁₂(OAc)₂(C₂O₄)(CO₃)₂(μ₃-OH)₃₆(μ₅-OH)₄(H₂O)₃₆]·x(H₂O) (x ≈ 70 for 3; H₄EDTA = ethylene diamine tetraacetic acid), was prepared through the assembly of repeating subunits under the action of an anion template. The analysis of the structures showed that compounds 1 and 2 containing 33 Ln³⁺ ions were isostructural, which were constructed by three kinds of subunits in the presence of CO₃^2- as an anion template, while compound 3 had a slightly different structure. Compound 3 containing 32 Gd³⁺ ions was formed by three types of subunits in the presence of CO₃^2- and C₂O₄^2- as a mixed anion template. The CO₃^2- anions came from the slow fixation of CO₂ in the air. Meanwhile, one kind of high-nuclearity lanthanide clusters showed high chemical stability. The quantum Monte Carlo (QMC) calculation suggested that weak antiferromagnetic interactions were dominant between Gd³⁺ ions in 3. Magnetocaloric studies showed that compound 3 had a large entropy change of 43.0 J kg^-1 K^-1 at 2 K and 7 T. Surprisingly, compound 2 showed excellent recognition and detection effects for permanganate in aqueous solvents based on the fluorescence quenching phenomenon.

Ligand Induced Double-Chair Conformation Ln12 Nanoclusters Showing Multifunctional Magnetic and Proton Conductive Properties

Many methods have been utilized to adjust the size of superatomic metal nanoclusters, while tuning the geometric conformations of specific nanoclusters is rare. Here, we demonstrate that conformation variation can be realized by slightly modifying the ligand under maintaining the nuclei number of metal atoms. A series of novel "double-chair" conformation Ln₁₂ (Ln = Sm (1), Eu (2), Gd (3), Tb (4), and Dy (5)) clusters were generated by replacing 3-formylsalicylic acid with 2,3-dihydroxybenzoic acid in the Ln₁₂ nanocluster. Intriguingly, Dy₁₂ displays slow magnetic relaxation at low temperatures, while Gd₁₂ shows a large magnetocaloric effect (MCE) of 35.63 J kg^-1 K^-1 at 2 K for ΔH = 7 T. Additionally, the introduction of numerous coordination water molecules in these clusters enables Dy₁₂ and Gd₁₂ with high proton conductivity, namely, 2.13 × 10^-4 and 3.62 × 10^-4 S cm^-1 under 358 K and 95% RH humidity conditions.

Regulatable Detection of Antibiotics Based on a Near-IR-Luminescent Tubelike Zn(II)-Yb(III) Nanocluster

A tubelike Zn(II)-Yb(III) cluster, [Zn6Yb5L5(HL)(NO3)4(DMF)6(EtOH)4(H2O)4] (1; DMF = N,N-dimethylformamide and EtOH = ethanol; molecular size 1.5 × 1.8 × 2.9 nm), was synthesized from a new long-chain Schiff base ligand. 1 exhibits a regulatable near-IR-luminescent response to nitrofuran antibiotics (NFAs) and fluoroquinolones with high sensitivity, which is not influenced by other antibiotics. The quenching constants of NFAs and fluoroquinolones range from 0.55 × 104 to 8.8 × 104 M-1, and the detection limits of 1 to them are from 4.2 × 10-4 to 2.6 × 10-5 M. It also shows a luminescent response to real antibiotic drugs containing NFAs and fluoroquinolones.

Ratiometric fluorescent detection of dipicolinic acid as an anthrax biomarker based on a high-nuclearity Yb18 nanoring

An 18-metal lanthanide nanoring [Yb₁₈(L¹)₈(HL²)₂(OAc)₂₀(MeOH)₈(EtOH)₆(H₂O)₄] (1), which shows a ratiometric fluorescent response to DPA, was constructed through the strategy of using two types of polydentate organic ligands. The addition of DPA increases the visible ligand-centered emission, but decreases the NIR lanthanide luminescence of 1. The limit of luminescent detection of 1 for DPA is 1.5 μM. The high fluorescence sensitivity of 1 to DPA is not affected by the existence of interferents such as aromatic carboxylates and ions.

One high-nuclearity Eu18 nanoring with rapid ratiometric fluorescence response to dipicolinic acid (an anthrax biomarker)

One 18-metal Eu(iii) nanoring (size: 1.0 × 2.7 × 2.7 nm) was constructed as a rapid ratiometric fluorescent probe for the detection of dipicolinic acid with high sensitivity and selectivity, by using two types of polydentate organic ligands.

Construction of a high-nuclearity Nd(III) nanoring for the NIR luminescent detection of antibiotics

One NIR luminescent 14-metal Nd(iii) nanoring (1, molecular size: 1.0 × 2.2 × 2.6 nm) was obtained from a rigid tridentate ligand, which can absorb and transfer light energy to the Nd(iii) ions. 1 shows interesting luminescence sensing activity to antibiotics, in particular to NFAs with high sensitivity due to the inner filter effect. The quenching constants and the limits of detection of 1 to NFAs are 1.05 × 104 M-1-2.33 × 104 M-1 and 3.05 μM-6.75 μM, respectively. The high fluorescence sensitivities of 1 to NFAs are not changed by the existence of other antibiotics. It also exhibits high sensitivity in the luminescent detection of NFAs contained in real antibiotic drugs.

Construction of Zn(II)/Cd(II)-Yb(III) Schiff Base Complexes for the NIR Luminescent Sensing of Fluoroquinolone Antibiotics

Two NIR luminescent Zn(II)/Cd(II)-Yb(III) complexes were obtained by the use of a Schiff base ligand with a binaphthyl backbone. Cd(II)-Yb(III) complex 2 has a triangular structure and exhibits interesting luminescent sensing activity to antibiotics, in particular to ciprofloxacin (CPFX) and norfloxacin (NFX) due to the inner filter effect. The limits of the detection of 2 to CPFX and NFX are 0.18 and 0.36 μM, respectively, and the fluorescence sensitivity is not changed with the existence of other antibiotics tested in this study.

Lanthanide-Based Molecular Cluster-Aggregates: Optical Barcoding and White-Light Emission with Nanosized {Ln20 } Compounds

Counterfeit goods represent a major problem to companies, governments, and customers, affecting the global economy. In order to protect the authenticity of products and documents, optical anti-counterfeit technologies have widely been employed via the use of discrete molecular species, extended metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), and nanoparticles. Herein, for the first time we demonstrate the potential use of molecular cluster-aggregates (MCA) as optical barcodes via composition and energy transfer control. The tuneable optical properties for the [Ln₂₀ (chp)₃₀ (CO₃ )₁₂ (NO₃ )₆ (H₂ O)₆ ], where chp^- =deprotonated 6-chloro-2-pyridinol, allow the fine control of the emission colour output, resulting in high-security level optical labelling with a precise read-out. Moreover, a unique tri-doped composition of Gd^III , Tb^III , and Eu^III led to MCAs with white-light emission. The presented methodology is a unique approach to probe the effect of composition control on the luminescent properties of nanosized molecular material.

NIR luminescent detection of quercetin based on an octanuclear Zn(ii)–Nd(iii) salen nanocluster

A NIR luminescent octanuclear Zn(ii)–Nd(iii) nanocluster 1 was constructed by the use of a salen-type Schiff base ligand. 1 exhibits a lanthanide luminescent response to Que with high sensitivity. The quenching constant of Que to the lanthanide emission is 2.6 × 10⁴ M⁻¹, and the detection limit of 1 to Que is 2.5 μM. The response behavior of 1 to Que is not affected by the existence of some potential interferents such as biomolecules.

An octanuclear Zn(ii)–Nd(iii) nanocluster was constructed by the use of a salen-type Schiff base ligand, and it shows an interesting NIR lanthanide luminescent response to quercetin with high sensitivity and selectivity.

Construction of a 18-Metal Neodymium(III) Nanoring with NIR Luminescent Sensing to Antibiotics

One 18-metal Nd(III) nanoring, [Nd₁₈(L¹)₈(HL²)₂(OAc)₂₀(MeOH)₈(EtOH)₆(H₂O)₄]·2(MeOH)·6(H₂O) (1), was constructed by the use of a hexadentate Schiff base ligand. For 1, the near-infrared (NIR) luminescence of Nd(III) was detected under the excitation of absorption band at 371 nm. The study of luminescent sensing properties exhibits that, even with the existence of other antibiotics, this Nd(III) nanoring displays high sensitivity and selectivity to nitrofuran antibiotics (NFAs). The luminescence quenching constants and limits of detection of 1 to NFAs are found to be 1.4 × 10⁴ to 3.5 × 10⁴ M^-1 and 0.9-2.2 μM, respectively.

Construction of a High-Nuclearity Elliptical Yb(III) Nanoring: NIR Luminescent Response to Metal Ions and Nitro Explosives

One 14-metal Yb(III) nanoring [Yb₁₄(HL)₂L₂₀(DMF)₈(H₂O)₈] (1) with a size of about 1.1 × 2.5 × 2.7 nm was synthesized from a tridentate ligand. Under the excitation of ligand absorption bands, 1 exhibits the NIR luminescence of Yb(III) and displays high luminescence sensitivity and selectivity to Co(II), Cu(II), and 2,4,6-trinitrophenol (PA) at the parts per million level. The K_SV values of 1 to Co(II), Cu(II), and PA are 6.0 × 10⁴ M^-1, 3.8 × 10⁴ M^-1, and 6.9 × 10⁴ M^-1, respectively. 1 exhibits high luminescent sensitivity to PA even in the presence of other explosives.

Construction of Chiral "Triple-Decker" Nd(III) Nanocluster with High NIR Luminescence Sensitivity toward Co(II)

One Nd(III) complex [Nd₃L₃(OAc)₃] (1) was synthesized from a conjugate Schiff base ligand H₂L. It shows a chiral "triple-decker" structure (1.1 × 1.2 × 1.8 nm) with Nd(III) ions sandwiched between the Schiff base ligands. 1 exhibits NIR Nd(III) luminescence, and the LMET efficiency is calculated to be 13.8%. It displays high luminescence sensitivity and selectivity to Co(II). The K_SV value and LOD of 1 to Co(II) are 9.96 × 10⁴ M^-1 and 0.97 μM, respectively.
