Abstract
In this study, a simple Schiff base sensor 1-(((4-nitrophenyl)imino)methyl)naphthalen-2-ol(NNM) has been used for chemosensing of metal ions. The metal sensing properties of sensor NNM have been investigated using UV-visible and fluorescence spectroscopic approaches. The spectral investigations revealed a red shift in absorption spectra and quenching in the emission band of the ligand molecule in the presence of Cu2+ and Ni2+ ions. The binding stoichiometry of sensor NNM for the analyte (Cu2+ and Ni2+ ions) has been investigated by the Job's plot analysis and found to be 1:1 (NNM:Analyte). The data of the Benesi-Hildebrand plot demonstrated that NNM detected Cu2+ and Ni2+ ions in nanomolar quantity. The binding insights among NNM and analytes (Cu2+ and Ni2+ ions) have been confirmed by shifted IR signals. Moreover, the reusabilty of the sensor has been investigated using an EDTA solution. In addition, the sensor NNM also successfully applied to real water samples for the identification and measurement of Cu2+ and Ni2+ ions. Hence, this system could be highly applicable in environmental and biological applications.

Abstract
Group 10 metals including Ni, Pd and Pt have been extensively applied in various essential aspects of human social life, material science, industrial manufactures, medicines and biology. The ionic forms of these metals are involved in several biologically important processes due to their strong binding capability towards different biomolecules. However, the mishandling or overuse of such metals has been linked to serious contamination of our ecological system, more specifically in soil and water bodies with acute consequences. Therefore, the detection of group 10 metal ions in biological as well as environmental samples is of huge significance from the human health point of view. Related to this, considerable efforts are underway to develop adequately efficient and facile methods to achieve their selective detection. Optical sensing of metal ions has gained increasing attention of researchers, particularly in the environmental and biological settings. Innovatively designed optical probes (fluorescent or colorimetric) are usually comprised of three basic components: an explicitly tailored receptor unit, a signalling unit and a clearly defined reporter unit. This review deals with the recent progress in the design and fabrication of fluorescent or colorimetric organic sensors for the detection of group 10 metal ions (Ni(II), Pd(II) and Pt(II)), with attention to the general aspects for design of such sensors.

Abstract
Metal cations such as Zn2+, Al3+, Hg2+, Cd2+, Sn2+, Fe2+, Fe3+ and Cu2+ play important roles in biology, medicine, and the environment. However, when these are not maintained in proper concentration, they can be lethal to life. Therefore, selective sensing of metal cations is of great importance in understanding various metabolic processes, disease diagnosis, checking the purity of environmental samples, and detecting toxic analytes. Schiff base probes have been largely used in designing fluorescent sensors for sensing metal ions because of their easy processing, availability, fast response time, and low detection limit. Herein, an in-depth report on metal ions recognition by some Schiff base fluorescent sensors, their sensing mechanism, their practical applicability in cell imaging, building logic gates, and analysis of real-life samples has been presented. The metal ions having biological, industrial, and environmental significance are targeted. The compiled information is expected to prove beneficial in designing and synthesis of the related Schiff base fluorescent sensors.

Abstract
This study developed an electrocolorimetric extraction technique as a simple, rapid, and green method for the simultaneous preconcentration and determination of Ni(II) in chocolate samples. The system was designed using an agarose gel (3% w/v) solution containing 10% v/v 80 mM dimethylglyoxime (DMG) and 10% v/v 0.03 M ammonia as colorimetric reagents to determine Ni(II) ions. When voltage was applied to the system, Ni(II) ions were extracted from the donor solution into the gel and formed Ni-DMG complexes with a pink color. Under the optimal conditions, a good linear range was obtained from 30 to 750 µg L-1 (R2 > 0.998) with a detection limit of 1 µg L-1. Inter- and intra-assay results showing relative standard deviations were less than 2.6% and 1.9%, respectively. Our developed method was applied to determine Ni(II) in chocolate samples. The results were in agreement with those obtained using ICP-OES.

Abstract
A new microplate analytical procedure is described for the determination of nickel (Ni2+) ions in natural water samples. A lophine analogue fluorescent sensor was synthesized and a spectral study showed a selective fluorescence quenching effect of chemical sensor by Ni2+ under optimized conditions. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations confirmed the formation of a Ni(II)L3 complex obtained by the Job plot. The calculations showed that the fluorescence emission peak of L collapses due to the distortion of L in the complex. The simple and fast microplate procedure allowed us to quantify Ni2+ with a linear response from 1.6 to 40 µg L-1 and a quantification limit of 5.4 µg L-1 without the need of a preconcentration step. The optimized procedure using high-throughput microplate assay has been applied for the determination of Ni2+ in natural water samples with good analytical performances.

Abstract
A series of fifteen silver (I) quinoline complexes Q1-Q15 have been synthesized and studied for their biological activities. Q1-Q15 were synthesized from the reactions of quinolinyl Schiff base derivatives L1-L5 (obtained by condensing 2-quinolinecarboxaldehyde with various aniline derivatives) with AgNO3, AgClO4 and AgCF3SO3. Q1-Q15 were characterized by various spectroscopic techniques and the structures of [Ag(L1)2]NO3Q1, [Ag(L1)2]ClO4Q6, [Ag(L2)2]ClO4Q7, [Ag(L2)2]CF3SO3Q12 and [Ag(L4)2]CF3SO3Q14 were unequivocally determined by single crystal X-ray diffraction analysis. In vitro antimicrobial tests against Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria revealed the influence of structure and anion on the complexes' moderate to excellent antibacterial activity. In vitro antioxidant activities of the complexes showed their good radical scavenging activity in ferric reducing antioxidant power (FRAP). Complexes with the fluorine substituent or the thiophene or benzothiazole moieties are more potent with IC50 between 0.95 and 2.22 mg/mL than the standard used, ascorbic acid (2.68 mg/mL). The compounds showed a strong binding affinity with calf thymus-DNA via an intercalation mode and protein through a static quenching mechanism. Cytotoxicity activity was examined against three carcinoma cell lines (HELA, MDA-MB231, and SHSY5Y). [Ag(L2)2]ClO4Q7 with a benzothiazole moiety and [Ag(L4)2]ClO4Q9 with a methyl substituent had excellent cytotoxicity against HELA cells.

The design and construction of novel C3-symmetric triaminoguanidine-triphenylamine conjugate (L) has been demonstrated and it displays positive solvatochromic behaviour with an increase in solvent polarity. The probe L acts as a selective colorimetric sensor for Cu2+ ions over other metal ions. Further, it shows high selective and sensitive detection of Fe3+ ions through turn-on fluorescence response. Moreover, the detection limits for Cu2+ and Fe3+ ions were found to be within the allowable range of the World Health Organisation (30 μM). The real-time application of the probe was showed by paper strip experiments as well as detection of Fe3+ ions in pharmaceutical tablets.
