Abstract
A fluorescent sensor, 5-((2-hydroxynaphthalen-1-yl)methyleneamino)benzene-1,3-dicarboxylic acid (coded as SB), containing both π-π interacting sites (such as π-electron-rich moieties) and hydrogen bonding (H-bonding) interacting sites (such as highly acidic protons) has been developed via high yield reflux method. It was characterized by the various analytical techniques such as Fourier transform-infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), proton nuclear magnetic resonance (1 H-NMR), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), field emission scanning electron microscope (Fe-SEM), elemental mapping, and UV - visible spectroscopy etc. The spectral response of the as-synthesized SB sensor has been investigated for various nitro explosives (NEs). It has been found that the SB sensor selectively and sensitive sense highly toxic 2,4,6-trinitrophenol (TNP) via the "turn-off" quenching response. Its limit of detection for TNP was calculated to be 30 ppb. Spectral overlap, detailed mechanistic studies for their mode of action, and density functional theory (DFT) calculations reveals that photo-induced electron transfer process (PET), fluorescence energy transfers process (FRET), and electrostatic interactions (i.e. H-bonding) are the key factors for the turn-off response of SB towards TNP. Notably, the synthesis of the sensor is cost-effective, energy efficient, and economic.

Abstract
The basic systems in this study are HL (1; 1:2 condensation product of 2,6-diformyl-4-ethylphenol and o-anisidine) and its ZnII and CdII complexes of composition [ZnII(LH)Cl2]·CH3OH (2) and [CdII(LH)Cl2] (3), all of which are synthesized and characterized by CHN elemental analyses, single crystal X-ray crystallography, powder X-ray diffraction (PXRD) and fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) spectrum. It has been established from the following experimental and theoretical studies that 1 is a fluorescent turn on sensor of ZnII ion and it exhibits all of excited state intramolecular proton transfer (ESIPT), photoinduced electron transfer (PET), twisted intramolecular charge transfer (TICT) and aggregation induced enhanced emission (AIEE): (i) Detailed absorption and emission (steady state / time resolved) studies in various single solvents, in solvent mixtures, with pH variation, with various single metal ions, with mixtures of metal ions, on varying temperature and on varying viscosity; (ii) dynamic light scattering (DLS) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) in solvent mixtures; (iii) density functional theory (DFT) and time dependent density functional theory (TD-DFT) calculations in ground and excites states of 1-3. It is shown that 1 can be efficaciously applied in inkless writing with the "write - erase - write" facility. The mechanisms/reasons of the observed properties have been addressed. The difference in fluorescence of ZnII and CdII complexes, unusual case of crystal structures of probe and complexes with ZnII and CdII, unusual features in the structures of 2 and 3 as well as a structure-property correlation have been discussed.

Abstract
A novel Schiff base with AIEE characteristics has been developed and used as a chemosensor for picric acid in aqueous media. The Schiff base 1-((E)-((E)-(4-(benzyloxy) benzylidene) hydrazono) methyl) naphthalen-2-ol [BBHN] with strong fluorescence emission was obtained by the simple condensation of 1-(hydrazonomethyl)naphthan-2-ol and 4-benzoxy benzaldehyde. The characterization of BBHN was done using Fourier Transfer Infra-Red, UV-visible, Magnetic Resonance (1H and 13C) spectroscopy, and HRMS. The sensing behaviour of BBHN aggregates towards nitro explosive was then investigated. The aggregates of BBHN showed a quick, highly selective, and sensitive fluorescence 'Turn Off' response towards picric acid (PA) in an aqueous medium among various other nitroaromatics. The limit of detection was 4.04 µM with 2.03 × 106 M-1 as the quenching constant. The fluorescence "Turn Off" response in the presence of PA is mainly due to π-π interactions, and non-covalent hydrogen bonding interactions. Moreover, steady-state fluorescence lifetime measurement and Stern - Volmer plots reveal that the fluorescence quenching followed mixed quenching strategies.

Abstract
The present investigation highlights a rhodamine-B- and coumarin-based efficient probe that selectively detects Ga3+ over other metal ions. The active pocket of the ligand for trapping the metal ions and the binding stoichiometry of its Ga3+ complex were discovered by single-crystal X-ray diffraction (SC-XRD) analysis. This binding stoichiometry was further confirmed in the solution state by mass spectrometry and Job's plot. The detection limit was found to be at the nanomolar level. Pyrophosphate being a well-known quencher could easily quench the fluorescence intensity of the RC in the presence of Ga3+ and reversibly recognize Ga3+ in the solution. The spiro ring opening of the ligand after Ga3+ insertion is proposed to be the principal mechanism for the turn-on fluorescence response. This ring opening was confirmed by SC-XRD data and nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) titration experiments. Both ground- and excited-state calculations of the ligand and complex have been carried out to obtain information about their energy levels and to obtain the theoretical electronic spectra. Furthermore, the live-cell imaging of the probe only and the probe after the addition of Ga3+ have been carried out in HaCaT cells and satisfactory responses were observed. Interestingly, with the help of this probe, Ga3+ can be tracked inside the intracellular organelle such as lysosomes along with other regions of the cell. The article highlights a rhodamine-coumarin-based probe for the detection of Ga3+ over other metal ions with a nanomolar level detection limit. Structural characterization of the ligand and its Ga3+ complex was investigated by SC-XRD. Density functional theory (DFT) and time-dependent DFT (TD-DFT) studies were carried out to explore the excited-state energies and electronic spectra. The application of the probe for the detection of Ga3+ in live cells has been explored, and positive responses were observed.

Abstract
A multi responsive fluorescent probe, N',2-bis(E-4-(diethylamino)-2-hydroxybenzylidene)hydrazine-1-carbothiohydrazideV(H2L) has been synthesized through one step condensation method. Probe, H2L shows 'turn-on' dual sensing properties towards Cd2+ and H2AsO4- at two distinct wavelength. The probe (H2L) is spectroscopically characterized and the chemo-sensing mechanism has been demonstrated through 1H NMR, absorption, steady state and time resolved emission study. The most promising advantage of the probe is its application in the one-pot detection of Cd2+ (λem = 462 nm) and H2AsO4-(λem = 492 nm) where intense emission appears at two different wavelengths and the observed limit of detection (LOD) of H2L towards Cd2+ and H2AsO4- are 2.67 × 10-8 M and 5.14 × 10-6 M respectively. Further the 'turn-on' emission property of H2L towards Cd2+ is applied to construct INHIBIT logic gate.

Abstract
In view of the fluorescent switching properties and anti-fatigue properties of diarylethene, a diarylethene fluorescent chemosensor for the immediate detection of zinc ion (Zn2+ ) and magnesium ion (Mg2+ ) in acetonitrile was synthesized in this article. The structure of 1o was determined by performing spectroscopy and elemental analysis. The presence of Zn2+ or Mg2+ made the chemosensor 1o show an obvious "turn-on" fluorescent signal (bright yellow-green for Mg2+ and bright cyan for Zn2+ ). The fluorescent change caused by the 1:1 binding of 1o and Zn2+ or Mg2+ might be due to hindering the excited-state intramolecular proton transfer (ESIPT) process, which were bolstered by Benesi-Hildebrand analysis, Job's plot curves, proton nuclear magnetic resonance (1 H-NMR) titration and mass spectrometry. The limits of detection were acquired from the standard curve plots for Mg2+ at 44.6 nM and for Zn2+ at 14 nM. Based on the fluorescent behaviors, a logic gate was constructed with the emission intensity at 528/518 nm as output signal, the ultraviolet-visible (UV-vis) lights, Mg2+ /Zn2+ and EDTA as input signals. Exogenous Zn2+ and Mg2+ fluorescent bioimaging were performed on Hela cells with 1o, indicating its potential application in biodiagnostic analysis. In particular, 1o was manufactured into test paper, and Zn2+ or Mg2+ can be conveniently, efficiently and qualitatively identified by the fluorescent color variation of the test strips.

Abstract
Fluorescent chemosensor, 3-(Anthracen-2-yliminomethyl)-benzene-1,2-diol (ANB) has been synthesized by one-step condensation of 2-aminoanthracene and 2,3-dihydroxybenzaldehyde and characterized using 1H-NMR, FT-IR and Mass spectroscopic techniques. The probe ANB was found to be an efficient 'turn-on' fluorescence chemosensor for the selective detection of Al3+ ion over other metal ions in an aqueous solution. The chemosensor exhibits ~ 27-fold enhancement of emission intensity in presence of Al3+ ion. Fluorescence quantum values for ANB and (Al3+-ANB)-complex are 0.004 and 0.097, respectively. In addition, the binding constant and the limit of detection were found to be 1.22 × 104 M-1 and 0.391 µM, respectively. The chemosensor ANB binds to Al3+ ions in 2:1 stoichiometric ratio which was supported by Job's plot, 1H-NMR titration and florescence titration. Fluorescence reversibility of the sensor complex was well established by adding EDTA in the same condition and a molecular INHIBIT logic gate was fabricated using this reversible nature of the sensor complex. Additionally, the chemosensor ANB shows a novel aggregation-induced enhanced emission phenomenon, where the aggregate hydrosol of ANB shows enhance emission intensity.

Abstract
In the quest of recognizing hazardous nitro-aromatic compounds in water, two pyridine-functionalized Schiff-base chemosensors, DMP ((E)-N-(3,4-dimethoxybenzylidene)(pyridin-2-yl)methanamine)) and MP (4-((E)-((pyridin-2-yl)methylimino)methyl)-2-ethoxyphenol) have been synthesized to detect mutagenic 2,4,6-Trinitrophenol (TNP) in soil, water as well as cellular matrices by producing turn-off emission responses as a combined consequence of PET and RET processes. Several experimental analyses including ESI-MS, FT-IR, photoluminescence, 1H NMR titration, and the theoretical calculations ascertained the formation and sensing efficacies of the chemosensors. The analytical substantiations revealed that structural variation of the chemosensors played a significant role in improving the sensing efficiency, which would certainly be worthwhile in developing small molecular TNP sensors. The present work depicted that the electron density within the MP framework was more than that of DMP due to the intentional incorporation of -OEt and -OH groups. As a result, MP represented a strong interaction mode towards the electron-deficient TNP with a detection limit of 39 μM.

Abstract
A quinoline-based small molecular probe, H2L was designed, synthesized and characterized by different spectroscopic methods. It was utilized as a multi-responsive probe for the detection of Fe3+, Al3+, Cu2+ and PPi. It showed very selective instant turn-on fluorimetric response towards Fe3+and Al3+ with a detection limit in nanomolar range. Solutions of H2L containing Fe3+ or Al3+ could sequentially sense PPi by a turn-off mechanism. Also, H2L could determine the presence of Cu2+ very selectively among a series of other metal ions by a sharp change in colour. Detection of Cu2+ through colorimetry was further investigated by systematic UV-Vis studies and the potential of H2L to act as a potential colorimetric sensor for Cu2+ was suitably established. Filter-paper strip experiments were conducted to demonstrate the practical utility of the proposed sensor. Potential applications of H2L as a sensor for pH in the acidic range has also been explored.

Abstract
The recognition and sensing of various analytes in aqueous and biological systems by using fluorometric or colorimetric chemosensors possessing high selectivity and sensitivity, low cost has gained enormous attention. Furthermore, thiophene derivatives possess exceptional photophysical properties compared to other heterocycles, and therefore they can be employed in chemosensors for analyte detection. In this review, we have tried to explore the design and detection mechanism of various thiophene-based probes, practical applicability, and their advanced models (design guides), which could be thoughtful for the synthesis of new thiophene-based probes. This review provides an insight into the reported chemosensors (2008-2020) for thiophene scaffold as effective emission and absorption-based chemosensors.

Designed Synthesis of Fluorescence 'Turn-on' Dual Sensor for Selective Detection of Al 3+ and Zn 2+ in Water. J Fluoresc 2021; 31:315-325. Abstract
1-(Pyridin-2-yl-hydrazonomethyl)-naphthalen-2-ol (PNOH) is a naphthalene-based fluorescence dual chemo-sensor for Al3+ and Zn2+. The probe (PNOH) is spectroscopically characterised and the chemo-sensing mechanism has been demonstrated through 1H NMR, absorption and both steady state and time resolved fluorescence study. The 'turn-on' luminescence property of PNOH is used for the selective detection of trace amount of Al3+and Zn2+via chelation enhanced fluorescence (CHEF) through complex formation. The 1:1 stoichiometry of each sensor-metal complex is observed from Job's plot based on UV-Vis titration. Most promising advantage of the probe (PNOH) is its application in the one-pot detection of Al3+ (λem- 460 nm) and Zn2+ (λem- 510 nm) exciting at same wavelength (λex- 420 nm) while high intense emission appears at two different wavelengths. Limit of detection (LOD) of PNOH towards Al3+ & Zn2+ are found to be 60 nM & 365 nM respectively. Real water sample analysis has also been demonstrated by using the probe PNOH.

Abstract
A simple antipyrine based fluorescent probe, 4-[(2-hydroxy-3-methoxy-benzylidene)-amino]-1,5-dimethyl-2-phenyl-1,2-dihydro-pyrazol-3-one (OVAP), has been successfully synthesized using a one-step condensation method. It exhibits dual sensing properties toward Al3+ and Zn2+ in the presence of other relevant metal ions and also displays novel aggregation induced emission enhancement (AIEE) characteristics in its aggregated/solid state. Aggregated OVAP microstructures with interesting morphologies have been synthesized using SDS as a morphology directing agent. Morphologies of the particles are characterized using optical microscopy. Photophysical properties of the as-synthesized OVAP hydrosol are studied using UV-Vis absorption, steady state and time resolved fluorescence spectroscopy. The 'turn on' luminescence property of OVAP is used for the selective detection of trace amounts of Al3+ and Zn2+ and a significant turn on fluorescence enhancement over ∼100-fold is triggered via chelation-enhanced fluorescence (CHEF) through complex formation. The 1 : 1 stoichiometry of each sensor metal ion complex is observed from Job's plot based on UV-Vis absorption titration. The LODs for Al3+ and Zn2+ are found to be 1.05 nM and 2.35 nM, respectively. Notably, the sensor, OVAP, is further demonstrated using a molecular INHIBIT logic gate.
