Light-Induced Living Polymer Networks with Adaptive Functional Properties

The advent of covalent adaptable networks (CANs) through the incorporation of dynamic covalent bonds has led to unprecedented properties of macromolecular systems, which can be engineered at the molecular level. Among the various types of stimuli that can be used to trigger chemical changes within polymer networks, light stands out for its remote and spatiotemporal control under ambient conditions. However, most examples of photoactive CANs need to be transparent and they exhibit slow response, side reactions, and limited light penetration. In this vein, it is interesting to understand how molecular engineering of optically active dynamic linkages that offer fast response to visible light can impart "living" characteristics to CANs, especially in opaque systems. Here, the use of carbazole-based thiuram disulfides (CTDs) that offer dual reactivity as photoactivated reshuffling linkages and iniferters under visible light irradiation is reported. The fast response to visible light activation of the CTDs leads to temporal control of shape manipulation, healing, and chain extension in the polymer networks, despite the lack of optical transparency. This strategy charts a promising avenue for manipulating multifunctional photoactivated CANs in a controlled manner.

60Co-γ Irradiation-Induced Shift and Polarity Reversal in the Triboelectric Series of Poly(ether sulfone)s

The sensitivity of triboelectric nanogenerators (TENGs) to the surface charge density highlights the significance of triboelectric materials and their modifications. Efforts have been directed toward developing effective strategies for increasing the surface charge density, expanding the potential applications of TENGs. This study proposes the use of irradiation technology for grafting to modify the electron-donating capability of poly(ether sulfone) (PES), thereby affording a dual benefit of enhancing the surface charge density and inducing a shift in the position of PES from negative to positive within the triboelectric series. The TENG based on grafted PES has resulted in a significant 3-fold increase in surface charge density compared to that of pristine PES, reaching 263 μC m-2. The surface charge density can be further increased to 502 μC m-2 through charge pumping. Notably, irradiation technology presents advantages over chemical grafting methods, particularly in terms of sustainability and environmental friendliness. This innovative approach shows great potential in advancing the domain of TENGs.

New Prospects Arising from Dynamically Crosslinked Polymers: Reprogramming Their Properties

Dynamically crosslinked polymers (DCPs) have gained significant attention owing to their applications in fabricating (re)processable, recyclable, and self-healable thermosets, which hold great promise in addressing ecological issues, such as plastic pollution and resource scarcity. However, the current research predominantly focuses on redefining and/or manipulating their geometries while replicating their bulk properties. Given the inherent design flexibility of dynamic covalent networks, DCPs also exhibit a remarkable potential for various novel applications through postsynthesis reprogramming their properties. In this review, the recent advancements in strategies that enable DCPs to transform their bulk properties after synthesis are presented. The underlying mechanisms and associated material properties are overviewed mainly through three distinct strategies, namely latent catalysts, material-growth, and topology isomerizable networks. Furthermore, the mutual relationship and impact of these strategies when integrated within one material system are also discussed. Finally, the application prospects and relevant issues necessitating further investigation, along with the potential solutions are analyzed.

Development of Biocompatible Digital Light Processing Resins for Additive Manufacturing Using Visible Light-Induced RAFT Polymerization

Patients with bone diseases often experience increased bone fragility. When bone injuries exceed the body's natural healing capacity, they become significant obstacles. The global rise in the aging population and the escalating obesity pandemic are anticipated to lead to a notable increase in acute bone injuries in the coming years. Our research developed a novel DLP resin for 3D printing, utilizing poly(ethylene glycol diacrylate) (PEGDA) and various monomers through the PET-RAFT polymerization method. To enhance the performance of bone scaffolds, triply periodic minimal surfaces (TPMS) were incorporated into the printed structure, promoting porosity and pore interconnectivity without reducing the mechanical resistance of the printed piece. The gyroid TPMS structure was the one that showed the highest mechanical resistance (0.94 ± 0.117 and 1.66 ± 0.240 MPa) for both variants of resin composition. Additionally, bioactive particles were introduced to enhance the material's biocompatibility, showcasing the potential for incorporating active compounds for specific applications. The inclusion of bioceramic particles produces an increase of 13% in bioactivity signal for osteogenic differentiation (alkaline phosphatase essay) compared to that of control resins. Our findings highlight the substantial improvement in printing precision and resolution achieved by including the photoabsorber, Rose Bengal, in the synthesized resin. This enhancement allows for creating intricately detailed and accurately defined 3D-printed parts. Furthermore, the TPMS gyroid structure significantly enhances the material's mechanical resistance, while including bioactive compounds significantly boosts the polymeric resin's biocompatibility and bioactivity (osteogenic differentiation).

Self-Growing Organic Materials

The growth of living systems is ubiquitous. Living organisms can continually update their sizes, shapes, and properties to meet various environmental challenges. Such a capability is also demonstrated by emerging self-growing materials that can incorporate externally provided compounds to grow as living organisms. In this Minireview, we summarize these materials in terms of six aspects. First, we discuss their essential characteristics, then describe the strategies for enabling crosslinked organic materials to self-grow from nutrient solutions containing polymerizable compounds. The developed examples are grouped into five categories based on their molecular mechanisms. We then explain the mechanism of mass transport within polymer networks during growth, which is critical for controlling the shape and morphology of the grown products. Afterwards, simulation models built to explain the interesting phenomena observed in self-growing materials are discussed. The development of self-growing materials is accompanied by various applications, including tuning bulk properties, creating textured surfaces, growth-induced self-healing, 4D printing, self-growing implants, actuation, self-growing structural coloration, and others. These examples are then summed up. Finally, we discuss the opportunities brought by self-growing materials and their facing challenges.

Step-growth polymerization by the RAFT process

Reversible Addition-Fragmentation Chain Transfer (RAFT) step-growth polymerization is an emerging method that synergistically combines the benefits of RAFT polymerization (functional group and user-friendly nature) and step-growth polymerization (versatility of the polymer backbone). This new polymerization method is generally achieved by using bifunctional reagents of monomer and Chain Transfer Agent (CTA), that efficiently yield Single Monomer Unit Insertion (SUMI) adducts under stoichiometrically balanced conditions. This review covers a brief history of the RAFT-SUMI process and its transformation into RAFT step-growth polymerization, followed by a comprehensive discussion of various RAFT step-growth systems. Furthermore, characterizing the molecular weight evolution of step-growth polymerization is elaborated based on the Flory model. Finally, a formula is introduced to describe the efficiency of the RAFT-SUMI process, assuming rapid chain transfer equilibrium. Examples of reported RAFT step-growth and SUMI systems are then categorized based on the driving force.

Mechanical modification of RAFT-based living polymer networks by photo-growth with crosslinker

In this work we present a study into the usage of crosslinker growth of Reversible addition-fragmentation chain-transfer polymerization (RAFT)-based Living Polymer Networks (LPNs) for the purpose of mechanical strengthening. Previous work with LPNs has thoroughly covered growth with monomers for various goals, and has touched on using a small amount of crosslinker during growth to retain mechanical strength after growth. Herein, we demonstrate growth with both purely crosslinker and purely monomer for the sake of comparison. We also show this across both symmetries of RAFT agent to see how their different growth behaviors affect the results. The asymmetric RAFT underwent a mesh-filling process during growth which resulted in both crosslinker and monomer strengthening the parent network to a similar degree. However, with the symmetric RAFT agent we saw that the crosslinker and monomer growth caused opposite effects due to their impact on the average crosslinking density; while monomer growth lowered it, growth with crosslinker increased it and strengthened the gel accordingly.

Linear Block Copolymer Synthesis

Block copolymers form the basis of the most ubiquitous materials such as thermoplastic elastomers, bridge interphases in polymer blends, and are fundamental for the development of high-performance materials. The driving force to further advance these materials is the accessibility of block copolymers, which have a wide variety in composition, functional group content, and precision of their structure. To advance and broaden the application of block copolymers will depend on the nature of combined segmented blocks, guided through the combination of polymerization techniques to reach a high versatility in block copolymer architecture and function. This review provides the most comprehensive overview of techniques to prepare linear block copolymers and is intended to serve as a guideline on how polymerization techniques can work together to result in desired block combinations. As the review will give an account of the relevant procedures and access areas, the sections will include orthogonal approaches or sequentially combined polymerization techniques, which increases the synthetic options for these materials.

Tuning Catalyst-Free Photocontrolled Polymerization by Substitution: A Quantitative and Qualitative Interpretation

Catalyst-free photocontrolled reversible addition-fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) polymerization avoids the side effects of photocatalysts but has the accompanying slow kinetics, thereby warranting more efficient photolysis and faster chain transfer. To understand the underlying mechanisms, both quantitative and qualitative interpretations are needed. Such a goal can be achieved by the iCAS (imposed automatic selection and localization of complete active spaces) approach [J. Chem. Theory Comput. 2021, 17, 4846], which maintains the same CAS and meanwhile provides localized orbitals along the whole reaction. Taking dithiobenzoate as a representative of RAFT agents, it is found here that electron-donating substitution (by methoxy) clearly outperforms both electron-standing (by methyl) and electron-withdrawing (by cyano) substitutions in facilitating photo-RAFT polymerization, by narrowing the gap between the π* and σ* orbitals, so as to facilitate the π* → σ* charge transfer dominating both the photolysis and chain transfer processes. Such findings are of general values.

A Photoinduced Dual-Wavelength Approach for 3D Printing and Self-Healing of Thermosetting Materials

Vat photopolymerization-based 3D printing techniques have been widely used to produce high-resolution 3D thermosetting materials. However, the lack of repairability of these thermosets leads to the production of waste. In this study, reversible addition fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) agents are incorporated into resin formulations to allow visible light (405 nm) mediated 3D printing of materials with self-healing capabilities. The self-healing process is based on the reactivation of RAFT agent embedded in the thermosets under UV light (365 nm), which enables reformation of the polymeric network. The self-healing process can be performed at room temperature without prior deoxygenation. The impact of the type and concentration of RAFT agents in the polymer network on the healing efficiency is explored. Resins containing RAFT agents enable 3D printing of thermosets with self-healing properties, broadening the scope of future applications for polymeric thermosets in various fields.

Photo-Iniferter RAFT Polymerization

Light-mediated polymerization techniques offer distinct advantages over polymerization reactions fueled by thermal energy, such as high spatial and temporal control as well as the possibility to work under mild reaction conditions. Reversible addition-fragmentation chain-transfer (RAFT) polymerization is a highly versatile radical polymerization method that can be utilized to control a variety of monomers and produce a vast number of complex macromolecular structures. The use of light to drive a RAFT-polymerization is possible via multiple routes. Besides the use of photo-initiators, or photo-catalysts, the direct activation of the chain transfer agent controlling the RAFT process in a photo-iniferter (PI) process is an elegant way to initiate and control polymerization reactions. Within this review, PI-RAFT polymerization and its advantages over the conventional RAFT process are discussed in detail.

PET-RAFT Polymerization: Mechanistic Perspectives for Future Materials

In the past decade, photochemistry has emerged as a growing area in organic and polymer chemistry. Use of light to drive polymerization has advantages by imparting spatial and temporal control over the reaction. Photoinduced electron/energy transfer reversible addition-fragmentation chain transfer polymerization (PET-RAFT) has emerged as an excellent technique for developing well-defined polymers from a variety of functional monomers. However, the mechanism, of electron versus energy transfer is debated in the literature, with conflicting reports on the underlying process. This perspective focuses on the mechanistic aspects of PET-RAFT, in particular, the electron versus energy transfer pathways. The different mechanisms are evaluated, including evidence for one versus the other mechanisms. The current literature has not reached a consensus across all PET-RAFT processes, but rather, each catalytic system has unique characteristics.

Reversible Deactivation Radical Polymerization: From Polymer Network Synthesis to 3D Printing

3D printing has changed the fabrication of advanced materials as it can provide customized and on-demand 3D networks. However, 3D printing of polymer materials with the capacity to be transformed after printing remains a great challenge for engineers, material, and polymer scientists. Radical polymerization has been conventionally used in photopolymerization-based 3D printing, as in the broader context of crosslinked polymer networks. Although this reaction pathway has shown great promise, it offers limited control over chain growth, chain architecture, and thus the final properties of the polymer networks. More fundamentally, radical polymerization produces dead polymer chains incapable of postpolymerization transformations. Alternatively, the application of reversible deactivation radical polymerization (RDRP) to polymer networks allows the tuning of network homogeneity and more importantly, enables the production of advanced materials containing dormant reactivatable species that can be used for subsequent processes in a postsynthetic stage. Consequently, the opportunities that (photoactivated) RDRP-based networks offer have been leveraged through the novel concepts of structurally tailored and engineered macromolecular gels, living additive manufacturing and photoexpandable/transformable-polymer networks. Herein, the advantages of RDRP-based networks over irreversibly formed conventional networks are discussed.

RAFT agent symmetry and the effects on photo-growth behavior in living polymer networks

Here we describe how different symmetries of RAFT agent act after growth. Asymmetric networks showed a pore-filling behaviour, while symmetric networks underwent mesh-expansion.

Rapid, green synthesis of high performance viscosifiers via a photoiniferter approach for water-based drilling fluids

Photocontrolled Radical Polymerization from Hydridic C-H Bonds

Given the ubiquity of carbon-hydrogen bonds in biomolecules and polymer backbones, the development of a photocontrolled polymerization selectively grafting from a C-H bond represents a powerful strategy for polymer conjugation. This approach would circumvent the need for complex synthetic pathways currently used to introduce functionality at a polymer chain end. On this basis, we developed a hydrogen-atom abstraction strategy that allows for a controlled polymerization selectively from a hydridic C-H bond using a benzophenone photocatalyst, a trithiocarbonate-derived disulfide, and visible light. We performed the polymerization from a variety of ethers, alkanes, unactivated C-H bonds, and alcohols. Our method lends itself to photocontrol which has important implications for building advanced macromolecular architectures. Finally, we demonstrate that we can graft polymer chains controllably from poly(ethylene glycol) showcasing the potential application of this method for controlled grafting from C-H bonds of commodity polymers.

Substituent effects in iniferter photopolymerization: can bond homolysis be enhanced by electronics?

Substituent effects on the dithiobenzoate moiety of RAFT iniferters are investigated. Donating groups accelerate the iniferter process, while withdrawing groups slow it. The unique efficiency of the methoxydithiobenzoate iniferter was uncovered.

3D printing and growth induced bending based on PET-RAFT polymerization

We demonstrated a method for PET-RAFT growth induced bending of a 3D printed strip using visible light, where the growth on one side of the strip causes stress and the strip bends accordingly to reach a more comfortable position.

A Versatile 3D and 4D Printing System through Photocontrolled RAFT Polymerization

Reversible addition-fragmentation chain-transfer (RAFT) polymerization is a valuable tool for synthesizing macromolecules with controlled topologies and diverse chemical functionalities. However, the application of RAFT polymerization to additive-manufacturing processes has been prevented due to the slow polymerization rates of typical systems. In this work, we developed and optimized a rapid visible (green) light mediated RAFT polymerization process and applied it to an open-air 3D printing system. The reaction components are non-toxic, metal free and environmentally friendly, which tailors these systems toward biomaterial fabrication. The inclusion of RAFT agent in the photosensitive resin provided control over the mechanical properties of 3D printed materials and allowed these materials to be post-functionalized after 3D printing. Additionally, photoinduced spatiotemporal control of the network structure provided a one-pass approach to 4D printed materials. This RAFT-mediated 3D and 4D printing process should provide access to a range of new functional and stimuli-responsive materials.

Ion-Pair Complexes of Pyrylium and Tetraarylborate as New Host-Guest Dyes: Photoinduced Electron Transfer Promoting Radical Polymerization

Ultrafast transient absorption spectroscopy, NOESY-NMR, and EPR spectroscopy shed light on how π-π stacking interactions combined with electrostatic interactions can be used to form stable ion-pair complexes between pyrylium and tetraarylborate ions in which the interaction of the π-delocalized clouds promotes the observation of new radiative processes and also electron transfer processes excitation using visible light. The results exhibit a striking combination of properties, chemical stability and photophysical and photochemical events, that make these ion-pair complexes as a step toward the realization of chromophore/luminescent materials and also their use as a new monophotoinitiator system in radical polymerization reactions.
