Rubik's cube PBA frameworks for optimizing the electrochemical performance in alkali metal-ion batteries

PBA frameworks have stood out among metal-organic frameworks because of their easy preparation, excellent stability, porous structures, and rich redox properties. Unfortunately, their non-ideal conductivity and significant volume expansion during cycling prevent more widespread application in alkali-metal-ion (Li+, Na+, and K+) batteries. By changing the type and molar ratio of metal ions, Rubik's PBA frameworks with infinite structural variations were obtained in this study, just like the Rubik's cube undergoes infinite changes during the rotation. X-ray adsorption fine structure measurements have documented the existence and determined the coordination environment of the metal ions in the Rubik's PBA framework. Benefiting from the more stable Rubik's cube structures with diverse composition, enhanced conductivity, and greater adsorption capacity, the obtained Rubik's cubes CoM-PBA anodes, especially CoZn-PBA deliver the enhanced cycling and rate performance in all the alkali-metal-ion batteries. The findings are supported by density functional theory calculations. Ex-situ X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and in-situ X-ray diffraction measurements were undertaken to explore the storage mechanism of CoZn-PBA anodes. Our results further demonstrate that the Rubik's cube PBA framework-based materials could be widely applied in the field of alkali-metal-ion batteries.

From lab to field: Prussian blue frameworks as sustainable cathode materials

Prussian blue and Prussian blue analogues have attracted increasing attention as versatile framework materials with a wide range of applications in catalysis, energy conversion and storage, and biomedical and environmental fields. In terms of energy storage and conversion, Prussian blue-based materials have emerged as suitable candidates of growing interest for the fabrication of batteries and supercapacitors. Their outstanding electrochemical features such as fast charge-discharge rates, high capacity and prolonged cycling life make them favorable for energy storage application. Furthermore, Prussian blue and its analogues as rechargeable battery anodes can advance significantly by the precise control of their structure, morphology, and composition at the nanoscale. Their tunable structural and electronic properties enable the detection of many types of analytes with high sensitivity and specificity, and thus, they are ideal materials for the development of sensors for environmental detection, disease trend monitoring, and industrial safety. Additionally, Prussian blue-based catalysts display excellent photocatalytic performance for the degradation of pollutants and generation of hydrogen. Specifically, their excellent light capturing and charge separation capabilities make them stand out in photocatalytic processes, providing a sustainable option for environmental remediation and renewable energy production. Besides, Prussian blue coatings have been studied particularly for corrosion protection, forming stable and protective layers on metal surfaces, which extend the lifespan of infrastructural materials in harsh environments. Prussian blue and its analogues are highly valuable materials in healthcare fields such as imaging, drug delivery and theranostics because they are biocompatible and their further functionalization is possible. Overall, this review demonstrates that Prussian blue and related framework materials are versatile and capable of addressing many technical challenges in various fields ranging from power generation to healthcare and environmental management.

Designing CoHCF@FeHCF Core-Shell Structures to Enhance the Rate Performance and Cycling Stability of Sodium-Ion Batteries

Prussian blue analogs are well suited for sodium-ion battery cathode materials due to their cheap cost and high theoretical specific capacity. Nax CoFe(CN)6 (CoHCF), one of the PBAs, has poor rate performance and cycling stability, while Nax FeFe(CN)6 (FeHCF) has better rate and cycling performance. The CoHCF@FeHCF core-shell structure is designed with CoHCF as the core material and FeHCF as the shell material to enhance the electrochemical properties. The successfully prepared core-shell structure leads to a significant improvement in the rate performance and cycling stability of the composite compared to the unmodified CoHCF. The composite sample of core-shell structure has a specific capacity of 54.8 mAh g-1 at high magnification of 20 C (1 C = 170 mA g-1 ). In terms of cycle stability, it has a capacity retention rate of 84.1% for 100 cycles at 1 C, and a capacity retention rate of 82.7% for 200 cycles at 5 C. Kinetic analysis shows that the composite sample with the core-shell structure has fast kinetic characteristics, and the surface capacitance occupation ratio and sodium-ion diffusion coefficient are higher than those of the unmodified CoHCF.

Chemically Etched Prussian Blue Analog-WS2 Composite as a Precatalyst for Enhanced Electrocatalytic Water Oxidation in Alkaline Media

The electrochemical water-splitting reaction is a promising source of ecofriendly hydrogen fuel. However, the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) at the anode impedes the overall process due to its four-electron oxidation steps. To address this issue, we developed a highly efficient and cost-effective electrocatalyst by transforming Co-Fe Prussian blue analog nanocubes into hollow nanocages using dimethylformamide as a mild etchant and then anchoring tungsten disulfide (WS2) nanoflowers onto the cages to boost OER efficiency. The resulting hybrid catalyst-derived oxide demonstrated a low overpotential of 290 mV at a current density of 10 mA cm-2 with a Tafel slope of 75 mV dec-1 in 1.0 M KOH and a high faradaic efficiency of 89.4%. These results were achieved through the abundant electrocatalytically active sites, enhanced surface permeability, and high electronic conductivity provided by WS2 nanoflowers and the porous three-dimensional (3D) architecture of the nanocages. Our research work uniquely combines surface etching of Co-Fe PBA with WS2 growth to create a promising OER electrocatalyst. This study provides a potential solution to the challenge of the OER in electrochemical water-splitting, contributing to UN SDG 7: Affordable and clean energy.

Bioresponsive nano-antibacterials for H2S-sensitized hyperthermia and immunomodulation against refractory implant-related infections

There is an increasingly growing demand for nonantibiotic strategies to overcome drug resistance in bacterial biofilm infections. Here, a novel "gas-sensitized hyperthermia" strategy is proposed for appreciable bacteria killing by the smart design of a metal-organic framework (MOF)-sealed Prussian blue-based nanocarrier (MSDG). Once the biofilm microenvironment (BME) is reached, the acidity-activated MOF degradation allows the release of diallyl trisulfide and subsequent glutathione-responsive generation of hydrogen sulfide (H₂S) gas. Upon near-infrared irradiation, H₂S-sensitized hyperthermia arising from MSDG can efficiently eliminate biofilms through H₂S-induced extracellular DNA damage and heat-induced bacterial death. The generated H₂S in the biofilm can stimulate the polarization of macrophages toward M2 phenotype for reshaping immune microenvironment. Subsequently, the secretion of abundant regeneration-related cytokines from M2 macrophages accelerates tissue regeneration by reversing the infection-induced pro-inflammatory environment in an implant-related infection model. Collectively, such BME-responsive nano-antibacterials can achieve biofilm-specific H₂S-sensitized thermal eradiation and immunomodulatory tissue remodeling, thus realizing the renaissance of precision treatment of refractory implant-related infections.
