Self-Assembly Bifunctional Tetranuclear Ln2Ni2 Clusters: Magnetic Behaviors and Highly Efficient Conversion of CO2 under Mild Conditions

A series of heterometallic tetranuclear clusters, Ln₂Ni₂(NO₃)₄L₄(μ₃-OCH₃)₂·2(CH₃CN) (Ln = Gd(1), Tb(2), Dy(3), Ho(4), Er(5); HL = methyl 3-methoxysalicylate), were synthesized solvothermally. The intramolecular synergistic effect of two metal centers of Ln(III) and Ni(II) and the exposed multimetallic sites serving as Lewis acid activators greatly increase the efficiency of the CO₂ conversion, and the yield for cluster 3 can be achieved at 96% at atmospheric pressure and low temperature. In particular, the self-assembly multimetal center with polydentate ligand shows good generality and enhanced recyclability. The design of such 3d-4f heterometallic clusters provides an effective strategy for the conversion of CO₂ under greener conditions. Meanwhile, magnetic investigations indicate that cluster 1 is a good candidate for magnetic refrigerant materials with a relatively large magnetocaloric effect (MCE) (-ΔS_m = 28.5 J kg^-1 K^-1 at 3.0 K and 7.0 T), and cluster 3 shows single-molecular magnet behavior under zero dc field. Heterometallic clusters with special magnetic properties and good catalytic behavior for the conversion of CO₂ are rare. Thus, they are potential bifunctional materials applied in practice.

Two Decanuclear DyIIIxCoII10-x (x = 2, 4) Nanoclusters: Structure, Assembly Mechanism, and Magnetic Properties

The aggregation and formation of heterometallic nanoclusters usually involves a variety of complex self-assembly processes; thus, the exploration of their assembly mechanisms through process tracking is more challenging than that for homometallic nanoclusters. We explored here the effect of solvent on the formation of heterometallic clusters, which gave two heterometallic nanoclusters, [Dy₂Co₈(μ₃-OCH₃)₂(L)₄(HL)₂(OAc)₂(NO₃)₂(CH₃CN)₂]·CH₃CN·H₂O (1) and [Dy₄Co₆(L)₄(HL)₂(OAc)₆(OCH₂CH₂OH)₂(HOCH₂CH₂OH)(H₂O)]·9CH₃CN (2), with the H₃L ligand formed from the in situ condensation reaction of 3-amino-1,2-propanediol with 2-hydroxy-1-naphthaldehyde in the presence of Co(OAc)₂·4H₂O and Dy(NO)₃·6H₂O. It is worth noting that the skeleton of cluster 1 has a high stability under high-resolution electrospray ionization mass spectrometry (HRESI-MS) conditions with a gradually increasing energy of the ion source. Cluster 2 underwent a multistep fragmentation even under a zero ion-source voltage for the measurement of HRESI-MS. Further analysis showed that cluster 2 underwent a possible fragmentation mechanism of Dy₄Co₆L₆ → Dy₂Co₆L₅/DyL → DyCo₂L₃/DyCo₂L → DyL/Co₂L₂. Most notably, the species emerging in the formation process of cluster 1 were tracked using time-dependent HRESI-MS, from which we proposed its possible formation mechanism of H₂L → Co₂L₂ → Co₂DyL₂/Co₃L₂ → Co₃DyL₂ → Co₄DyL₂ → Co₅Dy₂L₄ → Co₈Dy₂L₆. As far as we know, it is the first time to track the formation process of Dy-Co heterometallic clusters through HRESI-MS with the proposed assembly mechanism. The magnetic properties of the two titled Dy^III_xCo^II_10-x (x = 2, 4) clusters were studied. Both of them exhibit slow magnetic relaxation, and 1 is a single-molecule magnet at zero direct-current field.

Structural Complexity and Magnetic Orderings in a Large Family of 3d-4f Heterobimetallic Sulfates

The synthesis of a large family of heterobimetallic lanthanide copper sulfates was realized via stoichiometric hydrothermal reactions among Ln₂O₃, CuO, and H₂SO₄, giving rise to four distinct phases, namely Ln₂Cu(SO₄)₂(OH)₄ (Ln = Sm-Ho) (LnCuSO₄-1), Ln₄Cu(SO₄)₂(OH)₁₀ (Ln = Tm-Lu) (LnCuSO₄-2), LnCu(SO₄)(OH)₃ (Ln = Nd-Gd, except Pm) (LnCuSO₄-3), and LnCu(SO₄)(OH)₃ (Ln = Dy-Lu) (LnCuSO₄-4), with completely different topologies. The passage from LnCuSO₄-1 and LnCuSO₄-3 to LnCuSO₄-2 and LnCuSO₄-4 across the 4f series, respectively, can be ascribed to the effect of lanthanide contraction, which progressively induces shrinking of the Ln-O distance, reduction in the Ln coordination number, and eventually structural transitions. The incorporation of identical 3d-4f metal ions into different spin-lattices, in conjunction with substitution of diverse Ln³⁺ cations within the same spin-lattice, gives rise to tunable magnetic properties varying from ferromagnetic ordering in GdCuSO₄-3 and HoCuSO₄-4 to antiferromagnetic ordering in YbCuSO₄-4, and to paramagnetic correlations found in GdCuSO₄-1 and YbCuSO₄-2.

A single-ligand-protected Eu60−nGd(Tb)n cluster: a reasonable new approach to expand lanthanide aggregations
