Cobalt Oxide-Based Electrocatalysts with Bifunctionality for High-Performing Rechargeable Zinc-Air Batteries

In recent years, the rapid growth in renewable energy applications has created a significant demand for efficient energy storage solutions on a large scale. Among the various options, rechargeable zinc-air batteries (ZABs) have emerged as an appealing choice in green energy storage technology due to their higher energy density, sustainability, and cost-effectiveness. Regarding this fact, a spotlight is shaded on air electrode for constructing high-performance ZABs. Cobalt oxide-based electrocatalysts on the air electrode have gained significant attention due to their extraordinary features. Particularly, exploration and integration of bifunctional behavior for energy storage has remarkably promoted both ORR and OER to facilitate the overall performance of the battery. The plot of this review is forwarded towards in-depth analysis of the latest advancements in electrocatalysts that are based on cobalt oxide and possess bifunctional properties along with an introduction of the fundamental aspects of ZABs, Additionally, the topic entails an examination of the morphological variations and mechanistic details mentioning about the synthesis processes. Finally, a direction is provided for future research endeavors through addressing the challenges and prospects in the advancement of next-generation bifunctional electrocatalysts to empower high-performing ZABs with bifunctional cobalt oxide.

A novel sensor based on Ti3C2 MXene/Co3O4/carbon nanofibers composite for the sensitive detection of 4-aminophenol

A novel, sensitive Ti3C2 MXene/Co3O4/carbon nanofibers (Ti3C2 MXene/Co3O4/CNFs) composite was synthesized via a HF exfoliating Ti3AlC2 strategy, followed by doping Co3O4 and Ti3C2 MXene into the CNFs via a combination electrospinning and thermal annealing process. Ti3C2 MXene/Co3O4/CNFs composite exhibits higher catalytic effect, conductivity, chemical stability, and electrochemical performance than Co3O4 and Ti3C2 MXene in electrochemical impedance, differential pulse stripping voltammetry, chronocoulometry, and cyclic voltammetry tests. This Ti3C2 MXene/Co3O4/CNFs hybrid modified electrode provides fast analysis of 4-aminophenol (4-AP) with ultrahigh sensitivity, enhanced reproducibility and strong anti-interference capability. Furthermore, the level of 4-AP was quantified by this electrode with a wide linear range from 0.5 to 150 μM (R2 > 0.99) and a low detection limit about 0.018 μM was achieved. Finally, the fabricated electrode was used for fast and sensitive analysis of 4-AP spiked in tap water and blood serum samples. This work presents the new Ti3C2 MXene/Co3O4/CNFs electrode provides a platform for 4-AP monitoring and has the advantages of high selectivity, accuracy, simplicity, and rapid analysis.

Electrospun One-Dimensional Electrocatalysts for Oxygen Reduction Reaction: Insights into Structure-Activity Relationship

Oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) is an efficiency-determining process at the cathode in several energy storage and conversion devices, typically such as metal-air batteries and fuel cells. To date, a considerable amount of ORR electrocatalysts have been purposely exploited to address the key issues of high overpotentials and sluggish electrochemical kinetics. Electrospinning is a popular additive manufacturing technology, enabling the production of one-dimensional (1D) electrocatalysts with outstanding chemical stability and structural diversity. However, compared with the well-studied composite/structural design as well as performance advancement, insights into structure-activity relationship are yet to be settled. To clarify this key issue, herein, a dedicated review on the structure-activity relationship between the 1D architectures of electrospun electrocatalysts and their catalytic ORR property is presented. First, the development and principles of electrospinning technique, the composition regulation- and structure design-oriented fundamentals are summarized by imputing the perspectives of mechanistic understanding. Then, the typical examples of nanofiber-shaped and nanofiber-supported electrocatalysts with different compositions and structures for ORR are implemented to establish different structure-activity relationship by comparative studies. Finally, we also identify some ongoing challenges and present future perspectives to direct the precise manipulation of structure-activity relationship for further activation and optimization of electrospun 1D electrocatalysts.

N,O-codoped carbon spheres with uniform mesoporous entangled Co3O4 nanoparticles as a highly efficient electrocatalyst for oxygen reduction in a Zn-air battery

Highly efficient electrochemical catalysts for oxygen reduction reactions (ORRs) are urgently needed for various energy conversion and storage devices to overcome sluggish ORR kinetics. Here, N,O-codoped carbon spheres with uniform mesopores and a high specific surface area were used as supports for decorating Co₃O₄ nanoparticles via a facile immersion route. In addition to the benefit of ions and gas mass transfer, the abundant mesopores present in the three-dimensional (3D) carbon spheres also confine and isolate the Co₃O₄ nanoparticles growing in it, which help to provide rich Co₃O₄ active sites. The resulting hybrid material exhibits superior ORR activity in terms of even-better half-wave potential and stability than that of commercial Pt/C (40 wt%) in 0.1 M KOH electrolyte. To verify its catalytic activity, the hybrid material was employed as the cathode catalyst in a flexible solid-state zinc-air battery, which achieves a high power density of 227 mW cm^-2; this power density is much higher than that of a Pt/C catalytic zinc-air battery (133 mW cm^-2) under identical conditions. The improvement in catalytic activity in both aqueous and nonaqueous electrolytes can be attributed to the abundant active sites of the entangled Co₃O₄ nanoparticles, as well as the novel N,O-codoped carbon structure.
