Theoretical Insight into the Multiple Roles of LiHMDS in Pd-Catalyzed Borylation of Fluorobenzene

Pd-catalyzed borylation of fluorobenzene was theoretically studied. DFT calculations revealed that the reaction occurs through an unprecedented 3 + 6-membered ring transition state, in which one LiHMDS (HMDS = hexamethyldisilazane) acts as a ligand and another LiHMDS is essential to provide Li···N and Li···F interactions, overcoming the large destabilization of the strong phenyl-F bond distortion. The characteristic feature of LiHMDS was elucidated by comparing it with HMDS and NaHMDS analogues.

Direct C(sp3)-H Polyfluoroarylation: Access to Polyfluoroaryl Amino Acids via Rh-Catalyzed Selective C-F Bond Cleavage

A catalytic selective C-F bond alkylation method for polyfluoroarene with glycinates and derivatives in the presence of a DavePhos-ligated Rh catalyst was developed. This method avoids the preactivation of alkylating reagents and provides an efficient and straightforward route to synthesize a series of polyfluoroaryl amino acids via C(sp³)-H functionalization. This reaction proceeds under mild conditions and exhibits high reactivity and excellent chemoselectivities. Meanwhile, the synthetic potential of this method was demonstrated by gram-scale synthesis, and further transformations proved the application value of the products as well.

Photo-fluorination of nanodiamonds catalyzing oxidative dehydrogenation reaction of ethylbenzene

Styrene is one of the most important industrial monomers and is traditionally synthesized via the dehydrogenation of ethylbenzene. Here, we report a photo-induced fluorination technique to generate an oxidative dehydrogenation catalyst through the controlled grafting of fluorine atoms on nanodiamonds. The obtained catalyst has a fabulous performance with ethylbenzene conversion reaching 70% as well as styrene yields of 63% and selectivity over 90% on a stream of 400 °C, which outperforms other equivalent benchmarks as well as the industrial K-Fe catalysts (with a styrene yield of 50% even at a much higher temperature of ca. 600 °C). Moreover, the yield of styrene remains above 50% after a 500 h test. Experimental characterizations and density functional theory calculations reveal that the fluorine functionalization not only promotes the conversion of sp3 to sp2 carbon to generate graphitic layers but also stimulates and increases the active sites (ketonic C=O). This photo-induced surface fluorination strategy facilitates innovative breakthroughs on the carbocatalysis for the oxidative dehydrogenation of other arenes.

Recent Advances in Transition-metal-catalyzed C-C Bond Formation via C(sp2 )-F Bond Cleavage

The activation of a carbon-fluorine bond is one of the most challenging topics in modern synthetic organic chemistry due to their low reactivity compared to other carbon-halogen bonds. In this review, we present the recent developments since 2015 on cross-coupling reactions that form C-C bonds via cleavage of C(sp² )-F bonds. Not only the conventional activation of C(sp² )-F bonds, but also decarbonylative or carbonyl-retentive cleavage of C(acyl)-F bonds will be introduced. This paper mainly describes new protocols for the formation of C(sp² )-C(sp³ ), C(sp² )-C(sp² ), and C(sp² )-C(sp) bonds via transition-metal-catalyzed cleavage of C(sp² )-F bonds.

Transition Metal Exchanged Hydroxyapatite/Fluorapatite Catalysts for C-C and C-N Bond Forming Reactions

Transition metal (Cu, Zn, Rh, Pd) exchanged hydroxyapatite (HAP)/fluorapatite (FAP) materials have been synthesized by ion-exchange method resulting in incorporation of the metal ions in the HAP/FAP structure. C-C and C-N bond forming reactions are important in synthetic organic chemistry as these organic transformations are very critical. Transition metal exchanged FAP provides an efficient catalytic system for N-arylation of haloarenes and Suzuki and Heck coupling of haloarenes. By designing such catalytic materials, our group has developed synthetic methods which allow higher product yields and easy separation with the use of a small amount of catalyst in a shorter reaction time. This account addresses the work carried out in last two decades in the area of C-C and C-N bond forming reactions using transition metal exchanged fluorapatite.
