Abstract
The strategy, called purifying wastewater with waste materials (PWWM), can simultaneously improve the secondary utilization of industrial waste materials and in turn, reduce environmental pollution. However, the PWWM strategy has still not been extensively used because of its low purification efficiency of organic pollutants and extremely difficult secondary utilization process. Herein, we use zinc aluminum silicate (ZAS) to modify waste granular red mud (GRM) to form a recoverable adsorbent, called ZAS/GRM adsorbent. The ZAS has been found to exhibit exceptional adsorption performance with the ability to firmly anchor onto the surface of GRM, in which heavy metal ions can effectively solidify and reduce their outflow. Furthermore, many voids have been tactfully designed in the ZAS/GRM adsorbents by using a water vapor project, which provide more active sites for congo red (CR) organic dye, thereby remarkably improving the removal efficiency of CR. From our purification of CR, we find that the CR adsorption capacity of the ZAS/GRM adsorbent is 3.509 mg g-1, which is four times higher than pure GRM (0.820 mg g-1). This study demonstrates our PWWM strategy is highly effective and can inspire more research on waste reuse.

Abstract
Novel integration of adsorption followed by catalytic oxidation is expected to be more beneficial for higher Mn(II) removal performance. We prepared self-assembled 3D flower-like Mg(OH)2 coated on granular-sized polyurethane (namely FMHP) via hydrothermal method at 120 °C under a facile synthesis route. The optimized material, FMHP prepared with 7 g MgO and 20 g polyurethane (FMH0.35P), achieved up to 351.2 mg g-1 Mn(II) removal capacity by Langmuir isotherm model. Besides, FMHP exhibited high Mn(II) removal in a wide range of NaCl concentration (0~0.1 M) and pH 2-9. Notably, through consecutive kinetics, BET, XPS, XRD, FESEM, and TEM analyses, it was found that the MnOx layer grows in-situ via ion exchange with Mg(II) on FMHP and further boosts the Mn(II) removal via catalytic oxidation during the Mn(II) removal process. Further, column experiments revealed that the FMH0.35P exhibited superior Mn(II) removal capacities up to 135.9 mg g-1 and highly compatible treatment costs ($0.062 m-3) compared to conventional chemical processes. The granular-sized FMH0.35P prepared by economic precursors and simple synthesis route revealed a high potential for Mn(II) containing water treatment due to its high removal capacities and easy operation.

Abstract
Three commercially available bentonite–polymer composite geosynthetic clay liners (BPC GCLs) were selected for hydraulic conductivity testing, respectively permeated by two types of bauxite leachates with high alkalinity (pH > 12) and high ionic strength (620.3 mM). The influence of BPC GCLs on the attenuation behavior of Cr/Pb in the bauxite leachates was analyzed. The BPC GCLs with a low hydraulic conductivity (k < 10−10 m s−1) retard the migration of Cr and Pb and the Cr had a higher mobility than Pb in the BPC GCLs. Scanning electron microscope (SEM) microstructure analysis showed that the migration and attenuation behavior of Cr/Pb mainly depended on the chemical properties of the leachates, polymer content and the microstructure of the polymer. Higher attenuation of heavy metals was obtained with bauxite leachates having higher ionic strength. Sufficient polymer content is needed to ensure BPC GCLs have adequately low hydraulic conductivity to suppress attenuation of heavy metals. The gelatinous structure associated with hydrated linear or crosslinked polymer diminishes when the polymer in a BPC is in contact with bauxite leachates. Compromising the hydrogel structure promotes polymer elution and leaves pore space open, resulting in attenuation of heavy metals.
