Biosorption of anionic and cationic dyes via raw and chitosan oligosaccharide-modified Huai Flos Chrysanthemum at different temperatures

Multilayer Structure Ammoniated Collagen Fibers for Fast Adsorption of Anionic Dyes

Dye wastewater has become one of the difficult industrial wastewaters due to its significant characteristics such as high chroma and poor biodegradability. Here, we use collagen fibers (CFs) as the matrix, glutaraldehyde as the cross-linking agent, and polyethyleneimine (PEI) as the ammoniating modifier to prepare cationic-modified collagen fibers (CF-PEI). The CF-PEI still maintained the original fibrous structure with a larger adsorption area. The content of primary amino groups on CF-PEI was significantly increased, which not only improved the hydrophilic swelling performance of CFs but also improved the adsorption capacity. The adsorption capacity of CF-PEI for soap yellow and acid red could reach 538.2 and 369.7 mg g-1, respectively. The adsorption rate was fast, and the adsorption equilibrium could be reached in about 60 min. Desorption regeneration studies have shown that 0.1 mol L-1 HCl could achieve a better desorption effect, and the CF-PEI had a good recycling performance. The ammoniated modified CF-PEI was an excellent adsorption treatment material for anionic dye wastewater. It is expected to become an effective way for high-value resource utilization of waste dander in the leather industry.

Complex interior and surface modified alginate reinforced reduced graphene oxide-hydroxyapatite hybrids: Removal of toxic azo dyes from the aqueous solution

In this study, alginate reinforced reduced graphene oxide@hydroxyapatite (rGO@HAP-Alg) hybrids have been fabricated via co-precipitation technique. The developed adsorbent was effectively utilized for the removal of Reactive Blue 4 (RB4), Indigo Carmine (IC) and Acid Blue 158 (AB158) azo dyes from aqueous solution, and found to have the adsorption efficiency of 45.56, 47.16 and 48.26 mg/g, respectively. The thermodynamic parameters demonstrated the endothermic and spontaneous nature of the adsorption process. The adsorption system was pH-dependent and showed maximum dye removal at pH 6-7, which was indicative of the electrostatic interactions, surface complexation and the hydrogen bonding mechanisms involved between the adsorbate and adsorbent during the adsorption process. Furthermore, the renewability studies demonstrated the reusability and stability of rGO@HAP-Alg hybrids up to five successive cycles. This study delivers a promising strategy for removing dye molecules and extends the potential application of rGO@HAP-Alg hybrids to treat practical dye contaminated water/wastewater.

Effect of Lemon Waste Natural Dye and Essential Oil Loaded into Laminar Nanoclays on Thermomechanical and Color Properties of Polyester Based Bionanocomposites

In this work, polyester-based nanocomposites added with laminar nanoclays (calcined hydrotalcite, HT, and montmorillonite, MMT) loaded with lemon waste natural dye (LD) and essential oil (LEO) were prepared and characterized. The optimal conditions to synthetize the hybrid materials were obtained by using statistically designed experiments. The maximum LD adsorption with HT was found using 5 wt% of surfactant (sodium dodecyl sulfate), 5 wt% of mordant (aluminum potassium sulfate dodecahydrate) and 50% (v/v) ethanol. For MMT, 10 wt% of surfactant (cetylpyridinium bromide), 5 wt% of mordant, 1 wt% of (3-aminopropyl) triethoxysilane and 100% distilled water were used. LEO adsorption at 300 wt% was maximized with MMT, 10 wt% of surfactant and 50 °C following an evaporation/adsorption process. The obtained hybrid nanofillers were incorporated in a polyester-based matrix (INZEA) at different loadings (3, 5, and 7 wt%) and the obtained samples were characterized in terms of thermal stability, tensile behavior, and color properties. HT_LEM-based samples showed a bright yellow color compared to MMT_LEM ones. The presence of lemon hybrid pigments in INZEA-based systems produced a remarkable variation in CIELAB color space values, which was more visible with increasing the nanofillers ratio. A limited mechanical enhancement and reduced thermal stability was observed with the nanopigments addition, suggesting a limited extent of intercalation/exfoliation of MMT and HT in the polymer matrix. MMT_LEM pigments showed higher thermal stability than HT_LEM ones. A significant increase in Young's modulus of nanocomposites loaded with hybrid LEO was observed compared to the biopolymer matrix. The LEO inclusion into the nanoclays efficiently improved its thermal stability, especially for MMT.
