Preparation of graphene oxide/poly(vinyl alcohol) composite membrane and pervaporation performance for ethanol dehydration

Influence of graphene oxide additives on the NF separation of triazine-based H2S scavenging compounds using advanced membrane technology

This work proposes an innovative approach for the membrane separation of spent and unspent H2S scavengers (SUS) derived from the application of MEA-triazine in offshore oil and gas production. Modified nanofiltration membranes were fabricated by incorporating graphene oxide (GO) and polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) into a thin film composite (TFC) to obtain a thin film nanocomposite (TFN) with enhanced permeability. In addition, various immobilization strategies for GO were investigated. The performance of the membranes and the effect of the GO loading were evaluated in terms of permeability, fouling propensity, and rejection of key components of the SUS, i.e., MEA-triazine (unspent scavenger), dithiazine (spent scavenger), and monoethanolamine, operating on a sample of SUS wastewater obtained from an offshore oil and gas platform. Various characterization techniques, such as contact angle, FTIR, XRD, SEM, TGA, and AFM, were employed to evaluate the structure, composition, and hydrophilicity of the membrane. The results show a remarkable increase in permeability (from 0.22 Lm-2 h-1 bar-1 for the TFC to 5.8 Lm-2 h-1 bar-1 for the TFN membranes), due to the enhanced hydrophilicity from GO incorporation. The strong interfacial interaction between GO and PVA within the TFN membrane results in negligible nanofiller leaching. The incorporation of GO moderately increases the rejection of the unspent scavenger (63%-73%, 62%-79%, 62%-80%, and 68%-76%), while drastically increasing the rejection of the spent scavenger, which is approximately null for the TFC membrane without GO and increases up to 58% in the TFN membrane with GO. Therefore, while the proposed membranes cannot be used for the selective separation of the unspent form the spent scavenger, they can achieve substantial recovery of all the key components contained in the SUS to avoid their discharge into the sea.

Efficient Pervaporation for Ethanol Dehydration: Ultrasonic Spraying Preparation of Polyvinyl Alcohol (PVA)/Ti3C2Tx Nanosheet Mixed Matrix Membranes

Polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) pervaporation (PV) membranes have been extensively studied in the field of ethanol dehydration. The incorporation of two-dimensional (2D) nanomaterials into the PVA matrix can greatly improve the hydrophilicity of the PVA polymer matrix, thereby enhancing its PV performance. In this work, self-made MXene (Ti₃C₂T_x-based) nanosheets were dispersed in the PVA polymer matrix, and the composite membranes were fabricated by homemade ultrasonic spraying equipment with poly(tetrafluoroethylene) (PTFE) electrospun nanofibrous membrane as support. Due to the gentle coating of ultrasonic spraying and following continuous steps of drying and thermal crosslinking, a thin (~1.5 μm), homogenous and defect-free PVA-based separation layer was fabricated on the PTFE support. The prepared rolls of the PVA composite membranes were investigated systematically. The PV performance of the membrane was significantly improved by increasing the solubility and diffusion rate of the membranes to the water molecules through the hydrophilic channels constructed by the MXene nanosheets in the membrane matrix. The water flux and separation factor of the PVA/MXene mixed matrix membrane (MMM) were dramatically increased to 1.21 kg·m^-2·h^-1 and 1126.8, respectively. With high mechanical strength and structural stability, the prepared PGM-0 membrane suffered 300 h of the PV test without any performance degradation. Considering the promising results, it is likely that the membrane would improve the efficiency of the PV process and reduce energy consumption in the ethanol dehydration.

ZIF-67 Incorporated Sulfonated Poly (Aryl Ether Sulfone) Mixed Matrix Membranes for Pervaporation Separation of Methanol/Methyl Tert-Butyl Ether Mixture

Mixed matrix membranes (MMMs) with nano-fillers dispersed in polymer matrix have been proposed as alternative pervaporation membrane materials. They possess both promising selectivity benefiting from the fillers and economical processing capabilities of polymers. ZIF-67 was synthesized and incorporated into the sulfonated poly (aryl ether sulfone) (SPES) matrix to prepare SPES/ZIF-67 mixed matrix membranes with different ZIF-67 mass fractions. The as-prepared membranes were used for pervaporation separation of methanol/methyl tert-butyl ether mixtures. X-ray diffraction (XRD), Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) and laser particle size analysis results show that ZIF-67 is successfully synthesized, and the particle size is mainly between 280 nm and 400 nm. The membranes were characterized by SEM, atomic force microscope (AFM), water contact angle, thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), mechanical property testing and positron annihilation technique (PAT), sorption and swelling experiments, and the pervaporation performance was also investigated. The results reveal that ZIF-67 particles disperse uniformly in the SPES matrix. The roughness and hydrophilicity are enhanced by ZIF-67 exposed on the membrane surface. The mixed matrix membrane has good thermal stability and mechanical properties, which can meet the requirements of pervaporation operation. The introduction of ZIF-67 effectively regulates the free volume parameters of the mixed matrix membrane. With increasing ZIF-67 mass fraction, the cavity radius and free volume fraction increase gradually. When the operating temperature is 40 °C, the flow rate is 50 L·h^-1 and the mass fraction of methanol in feed is 15%, the mixed matrix membrane with ZIF-67 mass fraction of 20% shows the best comprehensive pervaporation performance. The total flux and separation factor reach 0.297 kg·m^-2·h^-1 and 2123, respectively.

A Review on the Morphology and Material Properties of the Gas Separation Membrane: Molecular Simulation

Gas membrane separation technology is widely applied in different industry processes because of its advantages relating to separation performance and economic efficiency. It is usually difficult and time consuming to determine the suitable membrane materials for specific industrial separation processes through traditional experimental research methods. Molecular simulation is widely used to investigate the microscopic morphology and macroscopic properties of materials, and it guides the improvement of membrane materials. This paper comprehensively reviews the molecular-level exploration of the dominant mechanism and influencing factors of gas membrane-based separation. The thermodynamics and kinetics of polymer membrane synthesis, the molecular interactions among the penetrated gases, the relationships between the membrane properties and the transport characteristics of different gases in the composite membrane are summarized and discussed. The limitations and perspectives of the molecular simulation method in the study of the gas membrane separation process are also presented to rationalize its potential and innovative applications. This review provides a more comprehensive reference for promoting the materials' design and engineering application of the gas separation membrane.

PVA-Based MMMs for Ethanol Dehydration via Pervaporation: A Comparison Study between Graphene and Graphene Oxide

Two different types of 2D nanosheets, including hydrophobic graphene (GR) and hydrophilic graphene oxide (GO), were filled into poly (vinyl alcohol) (PVA) polymers to prepare mixed matrix membranes (MMMs) for ethanol dehydration via pervaporation. The relationship between the physical/chemical properties of graphene and pervaporation performance of MMMs was investigated by a comparison of GR/PVA and GO/PVA MMMs in microstructure and PV performance. The incorporation of GO nanosheets into PVA reduced PVA crystallinity and enhanced the membrane hydrophilicity, while the incorporation of GR into PVA led to the opposite results. The incorporation of GR/GO into PVA depressed the PVA membrane swelling degree, and the incorporation of GR showed a more obvious depression effect. GR/PVA MMMs showed a much higher separation factor than GO/PVA MMMs, while they exhibited a much lower permeation flux than GO/PVA MMMs and pristine PVA membranes. The huge difference in microstructure and performance between GO/PVA and GR/PVA MMMs was strongly associated with the oxygen-containing groups on graphene lamellae. The higher permeation flux of GO/PVA MMMs was ascribed to the facilitated transport of water molecules induced by oxygen-containing groups and exclusive channels provided by GO lamellae, while the much lower permeation flux and higher separation factor GR/PVA MMMs was resulted from the smaller GR interplanar spacing (0.33 nm) and hydrophobicity as well as barrier effect of GR lamellae on the sorption and diffusion of water molecules. It was presumed that graphene intercalated with an appropriate number of oxygen-containing groups might be a good choice to prepare PVA-based MMMs for ethanol dehydration, which would combine the advantages of GR’s high interlayer diffusion selectivity and GO’s high permeation properties. The investigation might open a door to achieve both of high permeation flux and separation factor of PVA-based MMMs by tuning the microstructure of graphene.

Hydrophilic and organophilic pervaporation of industrially important α,β and α,ω-diols

The distillation-based purification of α,β and α,ω-diols is energy and resource intensive, as well as time consuming. Pervaporation separation is considered to be a remarkable energy efficient membrane technology for purification of diols. Thus, as a core pervaporation process, hydrophilic polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) membranes for the removal of water from 1,2-hexanediol (1,2-HDO) and organophilic polydimethylsiloxane-polysulfone (PDMS-PSF) membranes for the removal of isopropanol from 1,5 pentanediol (1,5-PDO) were employed. For 1,2-HDO/water separation using a feed having a 1 : 4 weight ratio of 1,2-HDO/water, the membrane prepared using 4 vol% glutaraldehyde (GA4) showed the best performance, yielding a flux of 0.59 kg m-2 h-1 and a separation factor of 175 at 40 °C. In the organophilic pervaporation separation of the 1,5-PDO/IPA feed having a 9 : 1 weight ratio of components, the PDMS membrane prepared with a molar ratio of TEOS alkoxy groups to PDMS hydroxyl groups of 70 yielded a flux of 0.12 kg m-2 h-1 and separation factor of 17 638 at 40 °C. Long term stability analysis found that both hydrophilic (PVA) and organophilic (PDMS) membranes retained excellent pervaporation output over 18 days' continuous exposure to the feed. Both the hydrophilic and organophilic membranes exhibited promising separation performance at elevated operating conditions, showing their great potential for purification of α,β and α,ω-diols.

Fabrication and Physicochemical Study of B2SA-Grafted Poly(vinyl Alcohol)-Graphene Hybrid Membranes for Dehydration of Bioethanol by Pervaporation

Tetraethylorthosilicate (TEOS)-crosslinked poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) solution was prepared and treated with benzaldehyde 2 sulphonic sodium salt acid (B2SA) for sulfonation. Different contents of graphene were incorporated into B2SA-grafted PVA-TEOS hybrid membrane to improve the membrane stability, mechanical strength, and overall pervaporation performance of the membranes. Membranes were fabricated using the casting technique. Developed membranes were then analyzed for their physicochemical changes by means of Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), scanning electron microscope (SEM), wide-angle X-ray diffraction (WAXD), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), contact angle analysis (CA), and mechanical strength. The lower d-spacing value observed in WAXD was evidence for the decreased inter-chain distance between the polymer chains. DSC exhibited the enhanced thermal stability of the developed membranes compared to the plane PVA membrane with enhancement in Tg value (106 °C), which was well above the pervaporation experimental temperature. Incorporation of graphene induced higher mechanical strength to the fabricated membranes. Further, the membranes were tested for the pervaporation separation of bioethanol. All the membranes were stable throughout the pervaporation studies, with M-2 G showing the total permeation flux of 11.66 × 10-2 kg/(m2 h) at 30 °C.

Dimensional Nanofillers in Mixed Matrix Membranes for Pervaporation Separations: A Review

Pervaporation (PV) has been an intriguing membrane technology for separating liquid mixtures since its commercialization in the 1980s. The design of highly permselective materials used in this respect has made significant improvements in separation properties, such as selectivity, permeability, and long-term stability. Mixed-matrix membranes (MMMs), featuring inorganic fillers dispersed in a polymer matrix to form an organic-inorganic hybrid, have opened up a new avenue to facilely obtain high-performance PV membranes. The combination of inorganic fillers in a polymer matrix endows high flexibility in designing the required separation properties of the membranes, in which various fillers provide specific functions correlated to the separation process. This review discusses recent advances in the use of nanofillers in PV MMMs categorized by dimensions including zero-, one-, two- and three-dimensional nanomaterials. Furthermore, the impact of the nanofillers on the polymer matrix is described to provide in-depth understanding of the structure-performance relationship. Finally, the applications of nanofillers in MMMs for PV separation are summarized.

Effect of Temperature and Branched Crosslinkers on Supported Graphene Oxide Pervaporation Membranes for Ethanol Dehydration

We describe the performance of graphene oxide (GO) membranes stabilized by crosslinkers and supported on polyethersulfone films in the dehydration of ethanol in a continuous cross-flow pervaporation set-up. We used two crosslinker species with branched structures (humic acid-like substances derived from urban waste and a synthetic hyperbranched polyol). The supported crosslinked GO films were prepared by rod coating on a polyethersulfone ultrafiltration membrane. Pervaporation experiments were carried out at temperatures of 40, 50, 60 and 70 °C. When the feed comprised pure water and ethanol, a much higher flux of water than ethanol was observed at all temperatures through GO films stabilized by the two crosslinkers (humic acid, GO-HAL, and the synthetic hyperbranched polyol, GO-HBPO), indicating the separation ability of these crosslinked membranes. For feed mixtures of water and ethanol, the GO-HAL and GO-HBPO membranes showed good separation performances by producing permeates with a significantly higher water content than the feed at all temperatures.

A highly hydrophilic benzenesulfonic-grafted graphene oxide-based hybrid membrane for ethanol dehydration

A new type of hybrid membrane was prepared by blending sodium alginate (SA) with benzenesulfonic-grafted graphene oxide (BS@GO), which showed higher hydrophilicity and more defects or edges than GO to create channels for the transfer of water molecules. BS@GO was synthesized by reacting aryl diazonium salts with graphene oxide (GO). The BS@GO sheets were aligned parallelly to the membrane surface and affected the interactions between the SA chains. BS@GO could improve the hydrophilicity and pervaporation properties of SA-based hybrid membranes. Also, compared to GO fillers, BS@GO fillers could supply higher water permeance to improve the pervaporation flux and separation factor. For the pervaporation of 90 wt% aqueous ethanol at 343 K, the optimum hybrid membrane with 1.5 wt% BS@GO in the SA matrix showed the maximum permeate flux of 703 ± 89 g m^-2 h^-1 (1.4 times higher than that of an SA membrane), and the highest separation factor was 5480 ± 94 (5.6 times higher than that of the SA membrane). Moreover, the hybrid membrane exhibited good stability and separation ability during long-term testing.

Poly(vinyl alcohol)-Modified Membranes by Ti3C2T x for Ethanol Dehydration via Pervaporation

In this paper, PVA/Ti3C2T x mixed matrix membranes (MMMs) were prepared by mixing the synthesized Ti3C2T x with the PVA matrix, and the pervaporation (PV) performance of the ethanol-water binary system was tested. The morphology, structural properties, and surface characteristics of the membranes were investigated by scanning electron microscopy, atomic force microscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, degree of swelling, and water contact angle. The PVA/Ti3C2T x MMMs exhibit excellent compatibility and swelling resistance. Moreover the effects of the Ti3C2T x filling level, feed concentration, and operating temperature on the ethanol dehydration performance were systematically studied. The results demonstrated that the separation factor of PVA/Ti3C2T x MMMs was significantly increased because of Ti3C2T x promoting the cross-linking density of the membrane. Specifically, the membrane showed the best PV performance when Ti3C2T x loading was 3.0 wt %, achieving a separation factor of 2585 and a suitable total flux of 0.074 kg/m2 h for separating 93 wt % ethanol solution at 37 °C.
