Facile preparation of low-cost HKUST-1 with lattice vacancies and high-efficiency adsorption for uranium

Synthesis and Characterization of MOF-Derived Structures: Recent Advances and Future Perspectives

Due to their facile tunability, metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are employed as precursors and templates to construct advanced functional materials with unique and desired chemical, physical, mechanical, and morphological properties. By tuning MOF precursor composition and manipulating conversion processes, various MOF-derived materials commonly known as MOF derivatives can be constructed. The possibility of controlled and predictable properties makes MOF derivatives a preferred choice for numerous advanced technological applications. The innovative synthetic designs besides the plethora of interdisciplinary characterization approaches applicable to MOF derivatives provide the opportunity to perform a myriad of experiments to explore the performance and offer key insight to develop the next generation of advanced materials. Though there are many published works of literature describing various synthesis and characterization techniques of MOF derivatives, it is still not clear how the synthesis mechanism works and what are the best techniques to characterize these materials to probe their properties accurately. In this review, the recent development in synthesis techniques and mechanisms for a variety of MOF derivates such as MOF-derived metal oxides, porous carbon, composites/hybrids, and sulfides is summarized. Furthermore, the details of characterization techniques and fundamental working principles are summarized to probe the structural, mechanical, physiochemical, electrochemical, and electronic properties of MOF and MOF derivatives. The future trends and some remaining challenges in the synthesis and characterization of MOF derivatives are also discussed.

Polyoxometalate-HKUST-1 composite derived nanostructured Na-Cu-Mo2C catalyst for efficient reverse water gas shift reaction

Transforming CO2 to CO via reverse water-gas shift (RWGS) reaction is widely regarded as a promising technique for improving the efficiency and economics of CO2 utilization processes. Moreover, it is also considered as a pathway towards e-fuels. Cu-oxide catalysts are widely explored for low-temperature RWGS reactions; nevertheless, they tend to deactivate significantly under applied reaction conditions due to the agglomeration of copper particles at elevated temperatures. Herein, we have synthesized homogeneously distributed Cu metallic nanoparticles supported on Mo2C for the RWGS reaction by a unique approach of in situ carburization of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) using a Cu-based MOF i.e. HKUST-1 encapsulating molybdenum-based polyoxometalates. The newly derived Na-Cu-Mo2C nanocomposite catalyst system exhibits excellent catalytic performance with a CO production rate of 3230.0 mmol gcat-1 h-1 with 100% CO selectivity. Even after 250 h of a stability test, the catalyst remained active with more than 80% of its initial activity.

Nitrogen-doped carbon-coated Cu0 activates molecular oxygen for norfloxacin degradation over a wide pH range

The Fenton-like activated molecular oxygen technology demonstrates significant potential in the treatment of refractory organic pollutants in wastewater, offering promising development prospects. We prepared a N-doped C-coated copper-based catalyst Cu0/NC3-600 through the pyrolysis of Mel-modified Cu-based metal-organic framework (MOF). The results indicate that the degradation of 20 mg/L norfloxacin (NOR) was achieved using 1.0 g/L Cu0/NC3-600 across a wide pH range, with a removal rate exceeding 95 % and total organic carbon (TOC) removals approaching 70 % after 60 min at pH 5-11. The nitrogen doping enhances the electronic structure of the carbon material, facilitating the adsorption of molecular oxygen. Additionally, the formed carbon layer effectively prevent copper leaching,contributing to increased stability to a certain extent. Subsequently, we propose the catalytic reaction mechanism for the Cu0/NC/air system. Under acidic conditions, Cu0/NC3-600 activates molecular oxygen to produce the •O2-, which serves as the primary active species for NOR degradation. While in alkaline conditions, the high-valent copper species Cu3+ is generated in conjunction with •O2-, both working simultaneously for NOR degradation. Furthermore, based on the LC-MS results, we deduced four possible degradation pathways. This work offers a novel perspective on expanding the pH range of copper-based catalysts with excellent ability to activate molecular oxygen for environmental water treatment.

Micro solid phase extraction of lead and cadmium using functionalized nanodiamonds@CuAl2O4@HKUST-1 nanocomposite for FAAS analysis in food and water samples

This study focuses on the development and application of a novel nanocomposite (functionalized nanodiamonds@CuAl2O4@HKUST-1)-based µ-SPE method for the sensitive and selective extraction of Pb and Cd from food and water samples. The technique offers high sensitivity and selectivity, allowing accurate measurement of these metals at trace levels. The detection limit is 0.031 µg kg-1 for Cd and 0.052 µg kg-1 for Pb, with a relative standard deviation of 1.7 % for Cd and 4.8 % for Pb. The method was successfully applied to real samples and efficiently quantified Pb and Cd in food and natural water samples. The highest concentrations were found in red lentils (0.274 µg kg-1 Pb) and fresh mint (0.197 µg kg-1Cd), but still below recommended limits set by FAO/WHO (300 µg kg-1 for Pb and 200 µg kg-1 for Cd). It promises to ensure food safety, monitor environmental contamination, and informs regulatory decisions to protect public health.

Facile adsorption of organophosphate pesticides over HKUST-1 MOFs

The recovery of organophosphate pesticides (OPPs) from aqueous solutions is imperative considering their agricultural and environmental implications. Among various mitigation approaches used for OPPs' removal, adsorption offers many advantageous features for OPPs abatement owing to its benign nature, cost-effective processing, and non-requirement of excessive equipment. This research describes the adsorptive removal of three organophosphate pesticides (OPPs) namely chlorpyrifos (CPF), methyl parathion (MP), and malathion (MAL) by HKUST-1 (HKUST = Hong Kong University of Science and Technology) metal-organic framework (MOF). The synthesis of HKUST-1 MOFs was confirmed by various spectroscopic and microscopic techniques. The adsorption kinetics was systematically investigated by varying three parameters to include solution pH, contact time, and initial pesticide concentration. Among all the three pesticides, HKUST-1 showed enhanced removal of CPF in terms of pH, resulting in an adsorption capacity of 1.82 mg·g-1. However, under the effect of contact time at 60 min, the adsorption capacity of HKUST-1 for PM, MAL, and CPF were computed to be 1.83, 1.79, and 0.44 mg·g-1, respectively. Besides, HKUST-1 showed a remarkable performance towards adsorptive removal of MAL (14.01 mg·g-1 at 10 mg·L-1 concentration) with linear increase in adsorption capacity as the function of initial pesticide concentration. The MOFs were also able to retain ca. 50% of their adsorption efficiency over the course of five cycles of adsorptive removal of CP. In the future, a comprehensive data table showing the performance of various MOFs against various OPPs can be constructed on the basis of parameters used in this study.

Construction of an egg-like DTAB/SiO2 composite for the enhanced removal of uranium

For the past few years, the environmental safety problems of radioactive nuclides caused wide public concern. In this work, the dodecyl trimethyl ammonium bromide-modified silicon dioxide composite (DTAB/SiO₂) was synthesized for the elimination of uranium. The dodecyl trimethyl ammonium bromide can decorate the surface of the silicon dioxide and change its surface topography, which can offer more active sites and functional groups for the combination of U(VI). The removal capacity of U(VI) on DTAB/SiO₂ reached 78.1 mg/g, which was greater than that of the silicon dioxide nanopowder. In the adsorption process, the surface oxygen-containing functional groups formed surface complexation with uranium. The results may provide helpful content to eliminate U(VI) and expand the application of surfactant in radioactive nuclide cleanup.

A critical review of uranium contamination in groundwater: Treatment and sludge disposal

Dissolved uranium in groundwater at high concentrations is an emerging global threat to human and ecological health due to its radioactivity and chemical toxicity. Uranium can enter groundwater by geochemical reactions, natural deposition from minerals, mining, uranium ore processing, and spent fuel disposal. Although much progress has been made in uranium remediation in recent years, most published reviews on uranium treatment have focused on specific methods, particularly adsorption. This article systematically reviews the major treatment technologies, explains their mechanism and progress of uranium removal, and compares their performance under various environmental conditions. Of all treatment methods, adsorption has received much attention due to its ease of use and adaptability under various conditions. However, salinity and competition from other ions limit its application in actual field conditions. Biosorption and bioremediation are also promising methods due to their low-cost and chemical-free operation. Strong base anion exchange resins are more effective at typical groundwater pH conditions. Advanced oxidation processes like photocatalysis produce less sludge and are effective even at low uranium concentrations. Electrocoagulation shows significantly improved performance when organic ligands are added prior to treatment. The significant advantages of membrane filtration are high removal efficiency and the ability to recover uranium. While each technology has its merits and demerits, no single technology is entirely suitable under all conditions. One major area of concern with all technologies is the need to dispose of liquid and solid waste generated after treatment safely. Future research must focus on developing hybrid and state-of-the-art technologies for effective and sustainable uranium removal from groundwater. Developing holistic management strategies for uranium removal will hinge on understanding its speciation, mechanisms of fate and transport, and socio-economic conditions of the affected areas.

Highly efficient functionalized MOF-LIC-1 for extraction of U(VI) and Th(IV) from aqueous solution: experimental and theoretical studies

A set of four new functionalized MOFs, namely MOF-LIC-DPPC, MOF-LIC-GA, MOF-LIC-PCA and MOF-LIC-SA, were synthesized via the post-synthetic modification (PSM) strategy using MOF-LIC-1 for efficient extraction of U(VI) and Th(IV) from an aqueous medium. FTIR, powder XRD, TGA and SEM-EDX were employed for characterization of the functionalized MOFs. Sorption studies for U(VI) and Th(IV) were performed by monitoring the pH and contact time. Interestingly, the modified MOF-LIC-SA displayed rapid (∼5 min) and efficient extraction towards U(VI) and Th(IV) from an aqueous medium and modified MOF-LIC-DPPC displayed enhanced thermal stability (600 °C) compared with the parent MOF-LIC-1 (450 °C). These studies revealed that the grafted functionalities on MOF-LIC-1 possess enhanced sorption efficiency towards U(VI) and Th(IV) as well as thermal stability. MOF-LIC-SA exhibited the highest sorption capacity towards U(VI) and Th(IV), viz. 298 mg g^-1 (pH 6) and 149 mg g^-1 (pH 6), respectively. Leaching, recyclability, and radiation stability studies were also performed using MOF-LIC-1 MOFs. Additionally, we investigated the nature of U(VI) interactions on MOFs by applying density functional theory (DFT). PSM MOFs with various functionalities display high selectivity and efficient extraction of U(VI) and Th(IV) over a wide pH range (2-9) and also exhibit easy recovery of metal ions from MOFs. These studies reveal that U(VI) and Th(IV) can be extracted from aqueous streams in a pH range from 6 to 8 and potential applications of these MOFs include recovery of U(VI) and Th(IV) from mine water, sea water, etc. The studies reported in the present work also have extensive potential applications for environmental concerns as well as in the nuclear industry.

Mechanistic studies on the conversion of NO gas on urea-iron and copper metal organic frameworks at low temperature conditions: in situ infrared spectroscopy and Monte Carlo investigations

Nitrogen oxide (NOx) emissions from high-temperature combustion processes under fuel-lean conditions continue to be a challenge for the energy industry. Selective catalytic reduction (SCR) is possible using metal oxides and zeolites. There is still a need to identify catalytic materials that are efficient in reducing NOx to environmentally benign nitrogen gas at temperatures lower than 200 °C. Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have emerged as a class of highly porous materials with unique physical and chemical properties. This study is motivated by the lack of systematic investigations on SCR using MOFs under industrially relevant conditions. Here, we investigate the extent of NO conversion with two commercially available MOFs, Basolite F300 (Fe-BTC) and HKUST-1 (Cu-BTC), mixed with solid urea as a source for the reductant, ammonia gas. For comparison, experiments were also conducted using cobalt ferrite (CoFe2O4) as a non-porous counterpart to relate its reactivity to those obtained from MOFs. Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) was utilized to identify the gas and surface species in the temperature range of 115–180 °C. Computational analysis was performed using Monte Carlo simulations to quantify the adsorption energies of different surface species. The results show that the rate of ammonia production from the in situ solid urea decomposition was higher using CoFe2O4 than Fe-BTC and Cu-BTC and that there was very limited conversion of NO on the mixed solid urea-MOF systems due to site blocking. The main conclusions from this study are that MOFs have limited ability to convert NO under low-temperature conditions and that surface regeneration requires additional experimental steps.

Controllable Synthesis of 1, 3, 5-tris (1H-benzo[d]imidazole-2-yl) Benzene-Based MOFs

The growing interest in metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) in both industrial and scientific circles has increased in the last twenty years, owing to their crystallinity, structural versatility, and controlled porosity. In this study, we present three novel MOFs obtained from the 1, 3, 5-tris (1H-benzo[d]imidazole-2-yl) benzene (TIBM) organic linker. The formed TIBM crystal powders were characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) to estimate the morphology of the particles, powder X-ray diffraction (XRD) to confirm the crystal structure, Brunauer–Emmett–Teller (BET) method for structural analysis, and thermogravimetric measurements to examine the thermal stability. The TIBM-Cu MOF showed excellent CO2 (3.60 mmol/g) adsorption capacity at 1 bar and 298 K, because of the open Cu site, compared to TIBM-Cr (1.6 mmol/g) and TIBM-Al (2.1 mmol/g). Additionally, due to the high porosity (0.3–1.5 nm), TIBM-Cu MOF showed a considerable CO2/N2 selectivity (53) compared to TIBM-Al (35) and TIBM-Cr (10).

Metal-Organic-Framework Based Functional Materials for Uranium Recovery: Performance Optimization and Structure/Functionality-Activity Relationships

Uranium recovery has profound significance in both uranium resource acquisition and pollution treatment. In recent years, metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have attracted much attention as potential uranium adsorbents owing to their tunable structural topology and designable functionalities. This review explores the research progress in representative classic MOFs (MIL-101, UiO-66, ZIF-8/ZIF-67) and other advanced MOF-based materials for efficient uranium extraction in aqueous or seawater environments. The uranium uptake mechanism of the MOF-based materials is refined, and the structure/functionality-property relationship is further systematically elucidated. By summarizing the typical functionalization and structure design methods, the performance improvement strategies for MOF-based adsorbents are emphasized. Finally, the present challenges and potential opportunities are proposed for the breakthrough of high-performance MOF-based materials in uranium extraction.

A hybrid nano-MOF/polymer material for trace analysis of fluoroquinolones in complex matrices at microscale by on-line solid-phase extraction capillary electrophoresis

A hybrid material (nano-metal organic framework@organic polymer, named as nano-MOF@polymer) was applied for the first time as sorbent for on-line solid-phase extraction capillary electrophoresis with ultraviolet detection (SPE-CE-UV). The resulting material was prepared building layer-by-layer a HKUST-1 (Hong Kong University of Science and Technology-1) nano-MOF onto the polymer surface, which allowed controlling the thickness and maximizing the active surface area. The sorbent was widely characterized at micro- and nano-scale to validate the synthesis and to establish the material properties. Then, fritless microcartridges (2 mm) were assembled by packing only a few micrograms of sorbent particles and investigated for preconcentration of fluoroquinolones (FQs) in several real samples (river water, human urine and whole cow milk). Under the optimized conditions, the sample (ca. 60 μL) was loaded in separation background electrolyte (BGE, 50 mM phosphate (pH 7)), and retained analytes were eluted using a small volume of 2% v/v formic acid in methanol (ca. 50 nL). The SPE-CE-UV method was validated in terms of linearity, limit of detection (LOD), limit of quantification (LOQ), repeatability, reproducibility and reusability. The developed method showed a LOD decreasing until 1 ng L^-1 when larger volumes of sample were loaded (ca. 180 μL), which was 500,000 times lower than by CE-UV. This undescribed sensitivity enhancement would arise from the homogenous and populated MOF nano-domains and the appropriate permeability of the hybrid material, which would promote high extraction efficiency and loading capacity. Furthermore, the sorbent showed appropriate selectivity regardless the analyzed complex environmental, biological or food matrix samples, achieving excellent detectability and recoveries (>90%).

Potential utility of HKUST-1-graphite nanocomposite to endow alkane with high thermal properties and low electrical resistivity

It is desirable to develop novel multipurpose phase change materials (PCMs) with improved energy storage and release characteristics. In this study, the utility of a nanocomposite composed of a metal-organic framework (MOF) and graphite was explored for shape-stable PCMs. The prepared MOF-integrated graphite featured favorable structural characteristics (such as large specific surface area (550.6 m²/g), increased total pore volume, and dominant mesopore structure). The obtained composite with a high energy storage capacity (111.4 J/g) exhibited an electrical resistivity that was at least 7 orders of magnitude lower than that of the pristine PCM. In addition, the alkane possessed enhanced chemical compatibility with the supporting scaffolds, outstanding shape, and thermal stabilities. The strong structural connectivity, high specific surface area, and pore size distributions (micro/mesopores) of the scaffolds play a remarkable role in large PCM infiltration ratio, high electrical conductivity, and improved thermal properties of as-prepared composites. It was also suggested that the cavities of the MOF, filled with graphite and the π-π interactions between strand ligands, generate favorable pathways in the nanocomposites. Subsequently creates a supramolecular "wire-like" paths and reduce the resistivity of the parent materials. Therefore, this multifunctional material shows the potential for applications in electro/thermal energy management systems.

Facile preparation and adsorption performance of low-cost MOF@cotton fibre composite for uranium removal

A novel composite MOF@cotton fibre (HCF) was prepared and characterized by FTIR, SEM, XPS and TGA. The effect of various parameters on the adsorption efficiency, such as the solution pH, contact time, initial U(VI) concentration and temperature, was studied. The maximal sorption capacity (Qm) is 241.28 mg g-1 at pH 3.0 for U(VI) according to the Langmuir isotherm adsorption model, and the kinetic and thermodynamic data reveal a relatively fast entropy-driven process (ΔH0 = 13.47 kJ mol-1 and ΔS0 = 75.47 J K-1 mol-1). The removal efficiency of U(VI) by HCF is comparable with that of pure cotton fibre and as-prepared MOF (noted as HST). However, the HST composite with cotton fibre significantly improved the treatment process of U(VI) from aqueous solutions in view of higher removal efficiency, lower cost and faster solid-liquid separation. Recycling experiments showed that HCF can be used up to five times with less than 10% efficiency loss.

Densification-Induced Structure Changes in Basolite MOFs: Effect on Low-Pressure CH4 Adsorption

Metal-organic frameworks' (MOFs) adsorption potential is significantly reduced by turning the original powder into pellets or granules, a mandatory step for their use at industrial scale. Pelletization is commonly performed by mechanical compression, which often induces the amorphization or pressure-induced phase transformations. The objective of this work is the rigorous study of the impact of mechanical pressure (55.9, 111.8 and 186.3 MPa) onto three commercial materials (Basolite C300, F300 and A100). Phase transformations were determined by powder X-ray diffraction analysis, whereas morphological changes were followed by nitrogen physisorption. Methane adsorption was studied in an atmospheric fixed bed. Significant crystallinity losses were observed, even at low applied pressures (up to 69.9% for Basolite C300), whereas a structural change occurred to Basolite A100 from orthorhombic to monoclinic phases, with a high cell volume reduction (13.7%). Consequently, adsorption capacities for both methane and nitrogen were largely reduced (up to 53.6% for Basolite C300), being related to morphological changes (surface area losses). Likewise, the high concentration of metallic active centers (Basolite C300), the structural breathing (Basolite A100) and the mesopore-induced formation (Basolite F300) smooth the dramatic loss of capacity of these materials.
