Dielectric Loss Mechanism in Electromagnetic Wave Absorbing Materials

Electromagnetic (EM) wave absorbing materials play an increasingly important role in modern society for their multi-functional in military stealth and incoming 5G smart era. Dielectric loss EM wave absorbers and underlying loss mechanism investigation are of great significance to unveil EM wave attenuation behaviors of materials and guide novel dielectric loss materials design. However, current researches focus more on materials synthesis rather than in-depth mechanism study. Herein, comprehensive views toward dielectric loss mechanisms including interfacial polarization, dipolar polarization, conductive loss, and defect-induced polarization are provided. Particularly, some misunderstandings and ambiguous concepts for each mechanism are highlighted. Besides, in-depth dielectric loss study and novel dielectric loss mechanisms are emphasized. Moreover, new dielectric loss mechanism regulation strategies instead of regular components compositing are summarized to provide inspiring thoughts toward simple and effective EM wave attenuation behavior modulation.

Recent progress of microwave absorption microspheres by magnetic-dielectric synergy

Designing and developing high-performance microwave absorption (MA) materials for electromagnetic protection and radar detection have received widespread attention. Recently, magnetic-dielectric MA materials have become a research hotspot due to their unique complementary functions and synergy loss mechanism. Herein, we review important research progress of excellent MA systems combining strong magnetic components and dielectric substrates. The functional materials involve magnetic materials, carbon components, semiconductors, polymer and so on. For a comprehensive analysis, current development and challenges are firstly introduced in the background. Modern requirements for microwave energy conversion are elaborated in the following part. To highlight the key points, more attention has been paid to the magnetic-dielectric synergy microsphere: (i) core/yolk-shell structure, (ii) multi-component assembly and (iii) MOF-derived synergy composites. Meanwhile, classical and typical high-performance MA composites with a multi-loss mechanism are also mentioned in this review paper. Finally, the design principles, electromagnetic synergy, future mechanism exploration and device application are presented, which provides guidance for understanding MA materials.

Polypyrrole Chains Decorated on CoS Spheres: A Core-Shell Like Heterostructure for High-Performance Microwave Absorption

Cobalt sulfide composites have exhibited great potential in terms of microwave absorption, owing to their low price, relatively high capacitance, and excellent electrocatalytic activity. Thus, a novel core-shell like structure comprising cobalt sulfide@polypyrrole (CoS@PPy) composite was synthesized by a facile solvothermal synthesis method and in situ polymerization. When coated by the heterostructure polypyrrole aerogel, CoS@PPy composite exhibited excellent microwave absorption properties with an optimal reflection loss (RL) of -41.8 dB at 6.96 GHz. Furthermore, the absorption bandwidth (RL < -10 dB) of 5.4 GHz could be reached at a coating thickness of 2.05 mm, probably attributing to the synergistic effect of good impedance matching, interfacial polarization, dipole polarization, and conductivity loss. Moreover, this work proposed a loss mechanism mode which probably occurred in the CoS@PPy composites. It was demonstrated that the CoS@PPy composite is a promising material in the field of electromagnetic wave absorption.

Drastic Microwave Heating of Percolated Pt Metal Nanoparticles Supported on Al2O3 Substrate

Microwave (MW) heating of supported metal nanoparticles (NPs) presents attractive effects on catalysis such as the rapid heating processes and the enhancement of the reaction rate. Improving the heating property of the NPs, which act as the catalytic active sites, the MW effects will become more significant. Here we show a systematic study about the supported Pt NPs structure to improve the MW heating property. We found that the drastic heating was induced by a percolated Pt NPs structure, where the conduction electrons move around in the two-dimensional network. On the other hand, no heating was observed in an isolated Pt NPs system with the confined electrons. We conclude that the percolation of the Pt NPs giving the network structure is one of the important key factors for the efficient MW heating. The optimized Pt NPs catalyst leads to the dramatic MW effects on catalytic reactions.

Preparation of cobalt crystals with various morphologies and the catalytic performance of platinum-on-cobalt crystal for the selective hydrogenation of nitrobenzene

The Pt/Co-No catalyst exhibited the best catalytic property (yield to aniline-95.8%) due to high Pt dispersion and nano-synergy effect between Pt- and Co-related species.
