Synthesis, structure, magnetism and photocatalysis of α-Fe2O3 nanosnowflakes

4-ATP-modified CNTs@NiO-Fe2O3-Ag SERS filter membrane for rapid in-situ detection of furfural in mineral oil

Evaluating the transformer aging state and detecting multi-aging characteristics in transformer oil with high sensitivity and fast speed has become a key challenge. This study introduces a P-N heterojunction (CNTs@NiO-α-Fe2O3) fabricated through electroless nickel plating and a one-step hydrothermal method. Additionally, silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) with adjustable particle sizes are grown on the surface using a chemical reduction method. To obtain high sensitivity and rapid SERS signal, CNTs@NiO-α-Fe2O3-Ag gel is adsorbed on a disposable needle filter (220 nm) surface, and 4-aminothiophene (4-ATP) is grafted onto the surface of SERS substrate. The minimum detection limit was 0.025 mg/L (EF = 5.22 × 104), and the response time of SERS best signal could be shortened to 3 min. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations reveal that by constructing a P-N heterostructure of NiO-Fe2O3 and assessing the adsorption energies of furfural, acetone, and methanol on the surface of the P-N heterojunction. This SERS strategy has a huge application prospect in the aging diagnosis of oil-paper insulation systems in a transformer.

Magnesium hexacyanoferrate nanocatalysts attenuate chemodrug-induced cardiotoxicity through an anti-apoptosis mechanism driven by modulation of ferrous iron

Distressing and lethal cardiotoxicity is one of the major severe side effects of using anthracycline drugs such as doxorubicin for cancer chemotherapy. The currently available strategy to counteract these side effects relies on the administration of cardioprotective agents such as Dexrazoxane, which unfortunately has unsatisfactory efficacy and produces secondary myelosuppression. In the present work, aiming to target the characteristic ferrous iron overload in the doxorubicin-contaminated cardiac microenvironment, a biocompatible nanomedicine prepared by the polyvinylpyrrolidone-directed assembly of magnesium hexacyanoferrate nanocatalysts is designed and constructed for highly efficient intracellular ferrous ion capture and antioxidation. The synthesized magnesium hexacyanoferrate nanocatalysts display prominent superoxide radical dismutation and catalytic H₂O₂ decomposition activities to eliminate cytotoxic radical species. Excellent in vitro and in vivo cardioprotection from these magnesium hexacyanoferrate nanocatalysts are demonstrated, and the underlying intracellular ferrous ion traffic regulation mechanism has been explored in detail. The marked cardioprotective effect and biocompatibility render these magnesium hexacyanoferrate nanocatalysts to be highly promising and clinically transformable cardioprotective agents that can be employed during cancer treatment.

Graphitic carbon nitride: a sustainable photocatalyst for organic pollutant degradation and antibacterial applications

Recently, graphitic carbon nitride (GCN) has been found to be of great interest in various sustainable applications. In this study, a simple preparation method using urea was utilized to synthesize GCN. In order to understand various morphological, structural, and optical aspects of the as-prepared sample, GCN was characterized using X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier-transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, Brunauere-Emmette-Teller (BET), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and diffused reflectance spectra (DRS) analysis. The visible-light-driven photocatalytic activity of prepared GCN was analyzed for various cationic dyes (Crystal violet, rose bengal, rhodamine B, auramine O, methylene blue) and anionic dyes (phenol red, xylenol orange, cresol red, methyl orange). The calculated efficiencies of degradation and values of apparent rate constant for all dye samples suggested that cationic dyes are more actively degraded using GCN than anionic dyes. In addition, GCN was further analyzed for its splendid antibacterial activity against pathogenic bacteria (Klebsiella pneumonia and Escherichia coli). The synthesized photocatalyst holds a bright scope for the efficient remediation of organic pollutants and bacterial disinfection in wastewater. Graphical abstract.
