Titanium phosphonate oxo-alkoxide “clusters”: solution stability and facile hydrolytic transformation into nano titania

Investigation of titanium(IV)-oxo complexes stabilized with α-hydroxy carboxylate ligands: structural analysis and DFT studies

This paper explores the findings on the structures and physicochemical properties of titanium-oxo complexes (TOCs) stabilized by 9-hydroxy-9-fluorenecarboxylate ligands. Two complexes, with the overall formulas [Ti4O(OiPr)10(O3C14H8)2] (1) and [Ti6O4(OiPr)2(O3C14H8)4(O2CEt)6] (2), have been synthesized. The structures of the isolated crystals (1 and 2) were determined using single-crystal X-ray diffraction. Molecular structure analysis of the crystals also employed vibrational spectroscopic techniques (IR and Raman), UV-Vis diffuse reflectance spectroscopy (UV-Vis-DRS), and powder X-ray diffraction (XRD). Density functional theory (DFT) was utilized to elucidate the electronic structures of these complexes. Furthermore, the theoretical charge distribution in 1 and 2 and their reactivity were calculated. The results of these investigations suggest that the reactivity of 2 is significantly greater than that of 1.

Topotactic Conversion of Titanium-Oxo Clusters to a Stable TOC-Based Metal-Organic Framework with the Selective Adsorption of Cationic Dyes

Titanium-oxo cluster (TOC)-based metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have received considerable attention in recent years due to their ability to expand the application of TOCs to fields that require highly stable frameworks. Herein, a new cyclic TOC formulated as [Ti6O6(OiPr)8(TTFTC)(phen)2]2 (1, where TTFTC = tetrathiafulvalene tetracarboxylate and phen = phenanthroline) was crystallographically characterized. TOC 1 takes a rectangular ring structure with two phen-modified Ti6 clusters as the width and two TTFTC ligands as the length. An intracluster ligand-to-ligand (TTF-to-phen) charge transfer in 1 was found for TOCs for the first time. Compound 1 undergoes topotactic conversion to generate stable TOC-MOF P1, in which the rectangular framework in 1 formed by a TOC core and ligands is retained, as verified by comprehensive characterization. P1 shows an efficient and rapid selective adsorption capacity for cationic dyes. The experimental adsorption capacity (qex) of P1 reaches a value of up to 789.2 mg/g at 298 K for the crystal violet dye, which is the highest among those of various adsorbents. The calculated models are first used to reveal the structure-property relationship of the cyclic host to different guest dyes. The results further confirmed the host MOF structure of P1.

Ligand functionalization of titanium nanopattern enables the analysis of cell-ligand interactions by super-resolution microscopy

The spatiotemporal aspects of early signaling events during interactions between cells and their environment dictate multiple downstream outcomes. While advances in nanopatterning techniques have allowed the isolation of these signaling events, a major limitation of conventional nanopatterning methods is its dependence on gold (Au) or related materials that plasmonically quench fluorescence and, thus, are incompatible with super-resolution fluorescence microscopy. Here we describe a novel method that integrates nanopatterning with single-molecule resolution fluorescence imaging, thus enabling mechanistic dissection of molecular-scale signaling events in conjunction with nanoscale geometry manipulation. Our method exploits nanofabricated titanium (Ti) whose oxide (TiO₂) is a dielectric material with no plasmonic effects. We describe the surface chemistry for decorating specific ligands such as cyclo-RGD (arginine, glycine and aspartate: a ligand for fibronectin-binding integrins) on TiO₂ nanoline and nanodot substrates, and demonstrate the ability to perform dual-color super-resolution imaging on these patterns. Ti nanofabrication is similar to other metallic materials like Au, while the functionalization of TiO₂ is relatively fast, safe, economical, easy to set up with commonly available reagents, and robust against environmental parameters such as humidity. Fabrication of nanopatterns takes ~2-3 d, preparation for functionalization ~1.5-2 d, and functionalization 3 h, after which cell culture and imaging experiments can be performed. We suggest that this method may facilitate the interrogation of nanoscale geometry and force at single-molecule resolution, and should find ready applications in early detection and interpretation of physiochemical signaling events at the cell membrane in the fields of cell biology, immunology, regenerative medicine, and related fields.

A Convenient Procedure for Preparing BiOX-TiO2 Photoelectrocatalytic Electrodes from a Titanium-Oxo Compound-Modified Carbon Fiber Cloth

Photoelectrocatalysis (PEC) has shown great advantages in sustainable organic synthesis and wastewater treatment because the PEC process can minimize electron-hole recombination, thereby improving the photocatalytic performance. Here, we report a convenient procedure for preparing immobilized BiOX-TiO₂ photoelectrocatalytic electrodes from a titanium-oxo compound (TOC)-modified carbon fiber cloth (CFC). Crystalline TOCs composed of Ti₁₂ cations and bismuth halide anions, [Ti₁₂O₁₄(OⁱPr)₁₈][Bi₃Br₁₁(THF)₂] (1) and [Ti₁₂O₁₄(OⁱPr)₁₈][Bi₄I₁₄(THF)₂] (2), were grown on CFC. Taking advantage of the easy hydrolysis of the titanium-oxo cation and bismuth halide anion, we could easily transform these CFC-immobilized crystals into BiOX-TiO₂/CFC (X = Br or I) photocatalysts, which facilitates recycling of the catalysts. The photocatalytic dye degradation test showed that the efficiency did not decrease obviously after 10 photocatalytic cycles. Using BiOX-TiO₂-modified CFC as electrodes, electrocatalysis (EC), photocatalysis (PC), and PEC were examined. PEC showed an attractive synergistic effect of EC and PC. These TOC-modified CFCs would be potential candidates for catalytic electrodes for sustainable wastewater purification.

Rare-Earth-Modified Titania Nanoparticles: Molecular Insight into Synthesis and Photochemical Properties

A molecular precursor approach to titania (anatase) nanopowders modified with different amounts of rare-earth elements (REEs: Eu, Sm, and Y) was developed using the interaction of REE nitrates with titanium alkoxides by a two-step solvothermal-combustion method. The nature of an emerging intermetallic intermediate was revealed unexpectedly for the applied conditions via a single-crystal study of the isolated bimetallic isopropoxide nitrate complex [Ti2Y(iPrO)9(NO3)2], a nonoxo-substituted compound. Powders of the final reaction products were characterized by powder X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy-energy-dispersive spectroscopy, Fourier transform infrared, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, Raman spectroscopy, and photoluminescence (PL). The addition of REEs stabilized the anatase phase up to ca. 700 °C before phase transformation into rutile became evident. The photocatalytic activity of titania modified with Eu3+ and Sm3+ was compared with that of Degussa P25 titania as the control. PL studies indicated the incorporation of Eu and Sm cations into titania (anatase) at lower annealing temperatures (500 °C), but an exclusion to the surface occurred when the annealing temperature was increased to 700 °C. The efficiency of the modified titania was inferior to the control titania while illuminated within narrow wavelength intervals (445-465 and 510-530 nm), but when subjected to a wide range of visible radiation, the Eu3+- and Sm3+-modified titania outperformed the control, which was attributed both to doping of the band structure of TiO2 with additional energy levels and to the surface chemistry of the REE-modified titania.

Titanium-Oxo Clusters with Bi- and Tridentate Organic Ligands: Gradual Evolution of the Structures from Small to Big

Homometallic titanium oxo clusters are one of the most important groups of metal oxo clusters, with more than 300 examples characterized by X-ray structure analyses. Most of them are uncharged and are obtained by partial hydrolysis and condensation of titanium alkoxo derivatives. The cluster cores, ranging from 3 to >50 titanium atoms, are stabilized by organic ligands. Apart from residual OR groups, carboxylato and phosphonato ligands are most frequent. The article critically reviews and categorizes the known structures and works out basic construction principles by comparing the different cluster types.

Self-Assembly of Asymmetrically Functionalized Titania Nanoparticles into Nanoshells

Titania (anatase) nanoparticles were anisotropically functionalized in water-toluene Pickering emulsions to self-assemble into nanoshells with diameters from 500 nm to 3 μm as candidates for encapsulation of drugs and other compounds. The water-phase contained a hydrophilic ligand, glucose-6-phosphate, while the toluene-phase contained a hydrophobic ligand, n-dodecylphosphonic acid. The addition of a dilute sodium alginate suspension that provided electrostatic charge was essential for the self-limited assembly of the nanoshells. The self-assembled spheres were characterized by scanning electron microscopy, elemental mapping, and atomic force microscopy. Drug release studies using tetracycline suggest a rapid release dominated by surface desorption.
