Homochiral nanotubes from heterochiral lipid mixtures: a shorter alkyl chain dominated chiral self-assembly

Water-Regulated Evolution of Inversion, Reinversion, and Amplification of Circularly Polarized Luminescence of Supramolecular Organogels Based on Glutamide-Cyanostilbene Amphiphile

Water incorporated with supramolecular building blocks in organic solvents can play a key role in the circularly polarized luminescence (CPL) inversion and amplification of supramolecular assemblies. Herein, we demonstrate that fine-tuning the water content regulated the assembly structure evolution and made the circular dichroism and CPL sign of the system undergo intriguing inversion, reinversion, and amplification processes based on a unique and interesting glutamide-cyanostilbene system, as supported by morphology, spectroscopic observations, and time-dependent density functional theory calculation.

Dissymmetrical tails-regulated helical nanoarchitectonics of amphiphilic ornithines: nanotubes, bundles and twists

How dissymmetrical tails (i.e. tails of different lengths) in one lipid molecule exert an impact on the structure and properties of the resulting assembly is an intriguing issue in both biological and material senses. However, the underlying mechanism that engenders such phenomena is still obscure, which prompted us to unmask it by exploring the self-assembly behaviours of artificial building blocks comprising dissymmetrical tails. Here, a series of Fmoc-protected ornithine lipids with dissymmetrical alkyl tails was designed and the dissymmetry of the two tails was found to hierarchically tune the self-assembled nanostructures from nanotubes to bundles and nanotwists. With the Fmoc-headgroup employed as a chromophorous probe, it was revealed that the alkyl chain dissymmetry controlled the interacting modes of van der Waals interactions between alkyl tails, π-π stacking between Fmoc motifs and hydrogen bonding formed by the three amide bonds in lipid bilayers. The counterbalance between those noncovalent interactions was responsible for such remarkable tuning ability towards self-assembly and emissive behaviours of the lipids, including circularly polarized light emission. This work provides insight into dissymmetrical tails-regulated biological structures and functions of natural lipids, and also sets up a novel strategy of rationally modulating chiral and emissive properties of supramolecular materials, i.e., tunable CPL materials, by exploitation of the tail dissymmetry.

A Universal Strategy for Tunable Persistent Luminescent Materials via Radiative Energy Transfer

In this work, a universal strategy for solid, solution, or gel state organic persistent luminescent materials via radiative energy transfer is proposed. The persistent luminescence (τ > 0.7 s) could be remotely regulated between different colors by controlling the isomerization of the energy acceptor. The function is relying on the simple radiative energy transfer (reabsorption) mechanism, rather than the complicated communication between the excited state of the molecules such as Förster resonance energy transfer or Dexter energy transfer. And the "apparent lifetime" for the energy acceptor is the same as the lifetime of the energy donor, which was different with traditional radiative energy transfer process. The simple working principle endows this strategy with huge universality, flexibility, and operability. Chiral V-shaped Pyrenes: Hexagonal Packing, Superhelix, and Amplified Chiroptical Performance

Here, we designed symmetric and dissymmetric chiral V-shaped pyrenes by linking achiral pyrenes to trans-1,2-cyclohexane diamine scaffolds with varied spacers to investigate their circular dichroism (CD) and circularly polarized excimer emission (CPEE). In molecular solution, the symmetric V-shaped molecules (P1, P2, P3) displayed spacer-dependent CD and CPEE originating from the intramolecular excimers while the dissymmetric V-shaped B was silent in CD and CPEE. Upon self-assembly, the chiral V-shaped conformation guided a helical hexagonal packing. Notably, P1 self-assembled into delicate superhelices with optimum chiroptical activities and the largest g_CD for pyrene derivatives to date. The dissymmetric B formed two distinct hexagonal aggregates as twists and rectangular nanotubes with greatly amplified CPEE. This work demonstrates unprecedented hexagonal superhelices from chiral V-shaped scaffolds and provides a deep insight into the relationship between molecular conformation, supramolecular architectures, and their chiroptical performance.

Supramolecular Chirality Transfer toward Chiral Aggregation: Asymmetric Hierarchical Self-Assembly

Self-assembly, as a typical bottom-up strategy for the fabrication of functional materials, has been applied to fabricate chiral materials with subtle chiral nanostructures. The chiral nanostructures exhibit great potential in asymmetric catalysis, chiral sensing, chiral electronics, photonics, and even the realization of several biological functions. According to existing studies, the supramolecular chirality transfer process combined with hierarchical self-assembly plays a vital role in the fabrication of multiscale chiral structures. This progress report focuses on the hierarchical self-assembly of chiral or achiral molecules that aggregate with asymmetric spatial structures such as twisted bands, helices, and superhelices in different environments. Herein, recent studies on the chirality transfer induced self-assembly based on a variety of supramolecular interactions are summarized. In addition, the influence of different environments and the states of systems including solutions, condensed states, gel systems, interfaces on the asymmetric hierarchical self-assembly, and the expression of chirality are explored. Moreover, both the driving forces that facilitate chiral bias and the supramolecular interactions that play an important role in the expression, transfer, and amplification of the chiral sense are correspondingly discussed.

Effect of Stereochemistry on Chirality and Gelation Properties of Supramolecular Self-Assemblies

Although chiral nanostructures have been fabricated at various structural levels, the transfer and amplification of chirality from molecules to supramolecular self-assemblies are still puzzling, especially for heterochiral molecules. Herein, four series of C₂ -symmetrical dipeptide-based derivatives bearing various amino acid sequences and different chiralities are designed and synthesized. The transcription and amplification of molecular chirality to supramolecular assemblies are achieved. The results show that supramolecular chirality is only determined by the amino acid adjacent to the benzene core, irrespective of the absolute configuration of the C-terminal amino acid. In addition, molecular chirality also has a significant influence on the gelation behavior. For the diphenylalanine-based gelators, the homochiral gelators can be gelled through a conventional heating-cooling process, whereas heterochiral gelators form translucent stable gels under sonication. The racemic gels possess higher mechanical properties than those of the pure enantiomers. All of these results contribute to an increasing knowledge over control of the generation of specific chiral supramolecular structures and the development of new optimized strategies to achieve functional supramolecular organogels through heterochiral and racemic systems.
