Multidimensional Dynamic Control of Supramolecular Phthalocyanine Gear: A Self-Assembly System Responding to Solvent, Temperature, and Hydrostatic Pressure

Smart supramolecular materials that respond toward various external stimuli hold great promise for various applications in molecular memories, logic gates, and drug delivery systems. In this study, the active control over the self-assembly of phathalocyanine gear was achieved by combining temperature and hydrostatic pressure stimuli with a dynamic solvent. Eventually, we found that the supramolecular gear can behave as a logic gate; "engaged" (+1) or "not" (0) state is switchable by solvent, temperature, and hydrostatic pressure. This paper describes not only new aspects for the rational design of smart stimuli-responsive supramolecular materials but also the significance of multidimensional dynamic control.

Dual effect of light and ultrasound for efficient singlet oxygen generation with novel diaxial silicon phthalocyanine sensitizer

To treat a life-threatening disease like cancer, photodynamic therapy (PDT) and sonodynamic therapy (SDT) methods were combined into sono-photodynamic therapy (SPDT) as an effective therapeutic solution. Each day, the usage of phthalocyanine sensitizers increases in the therapeutic applications as they have the ability to produce more reactive oxygen species. In this context, a new diaxially silicon phthalocyanine sensitizer, containing triazole and tert-butyl groups, was synthesized. After elucidating the structure of the complex with elemental analysis, FT-IR, UV-Vis, MALDI-TOF MS and 1 H NMR, its photophysical, photochemical and sono-photochemical properties were examined. When singlet oxygen generation capacity of the new synthesized silicon phthalocyanine complex was determined and compared among photochemical (PDT; ФΔ  = 0.59 in DMSO, 0.44 in THF, 0.47 in toluene) and sonophotochemical (SPDT; ФΔ  = 0.88 in dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO), 0.60 in tetrahydrofuran (THF), 0.65 in toluene) methods, it can be said that the complex is a successful sono-photosensitizer that can be used as a good SPDT agent in vitro or in vivo future studies.

Synthesis and Electronic Properties of Directly Linked Dihydrodiazatetracene Dimers

5,12-Dihydro-5,12-diazatetracene (DHDAT) dimers with different substitution patterns are synthesized: a symmetric one with a C-C bond between the monomer units (1) and two asymmetric ones with a C-N bond between the monomer units (2 and 3). The DHDAT units are planar in the C-C linked dimer 1 but perpendicularly oriented in the C-N linked dimers 2 and 3 (from X-ray analysis). The electronic ground-state interaction between the two units is large in 1 and small in 2 and 3. The emission behavior of 3 is different from that of other dimers and its monomer; it displays positive solvatochromism, characteristic for electron donor-acceptor molecules, despite its donor-donor type structure. Compound 3 exhibits a unique multi-step thermochromic emission behavior. The emission behavior is attributed to the asymmetric distribution of the HOMO and LUMO of DHDAT.
