Phase segregated Cu2-x Se/Ni3Se4 bimetallic selenide nanocrystals formed through the cation exchange reaction for active water oxidation precatalysts

Waning-and-waxing shape changes in ionic nanoplates upon cation exchange

Flexible control of the composition and morphology of nanocrystals (NCs) over a wide range is an essential technology for the creation of functional nanomaterials. Cation exchange (CE) is a facile method by which to finely tune the compositions of ionic NCs, providing an opportunity to obtain complex nanostructures that are difficult to form using conventional chemical synthesis procedures. However, due to their robust anion frameworks, CE cannot typically be used to modify the original morphology of the host NCs. In this study, we report an anisotropic morphological transformation of Cu1.8S NCs during CE. Upon partial CE of Cu1.8S nanoplates (NPLs) with Mn2+, the hexagonal NPLs are transformed into crescent-shaped Cu1.8S-MnS NPLs. Upon further CE, these crescent-shaped NPLs evolve back into completely hexagonal MnS NPLs. Comprehensive characterization of the intermediates reveals that this waxing-and-waning shape-evolution process is due to dissolution, redeposition, and intraparticle migration of Cu+ and S2-. Furthermore, in addition to Mn2+, this CE-induced transformation process occurs with Zn2+, Cd2+ and Fe3+. This finding presents a strategy by which to create heterostructured NCs with various morphologies and compositions under mild conditions.

Interface Enables Faster Surface Reconstruction in a Heterostructured CuSey/NiSex Electrocatalyst for Realizing Urea Oxidation

Creating affordable electrocatalysts and understanding the real-time catalytic process of the urea oxidation reaction (UOR) are crucial for advancing urea-based technologies. Herein, a Cu-Ni based selenide electrocatalyst (CuSey/NiSex/NF) was created using a hydrothermal technique and selenization treatment, featuring a heterogeneous interface rich in Cu2-xSe, Cu3Se2, Ni3Se4, and NiSe2. This catalyst demonstrated outstanding urea electrooxidation performance, achieving 10 mA cm-2 with just 1.31 V and sustaining stability for 96 h. Through in-situ Raman spectroscopy and ex-situ characterizations, it is discovered that NiOOH is formed through surface reconstruction in the UOR process, with high-valence Ni serving as the key site for effective urea oxidation. Moreover, the electrochemical analysis revealed that CuSey had dual effects. An analysis of XPS and electrochemical tests revealed that electron transfer from CuSey to NiSex within the CuSey/NiSex/NF heterostructure enhanced the UOR kinetics of the catalyst. Additionally, according to the in-situ Raman spectroscopy findings, the existence of CuSey facilitates a easier and faster surface reconstruction of NiSex, leading to the creation of additional active sites for urea oxidation. More significantly, this work provides an excellent "precatalyst" for highly efficient UOR, along with an in-depth understanding of the mechanism behind the structural changes in electrocatalysts and the discovery of their true active sites.

Pre-phase transition of a Cu2-xS template enables polymorph selective synthesis of MS (M = Zn, Cd, Mn) nanocrystals via cation exchange reactions

Utilization of copper-deficient Cu2-xS nanocrystals (NCs) with diverse crystal phases and stoichiometries as cation exchange (CE) templates is a potential route to overcome the current limitations in the polymorph selective synthesis of desired nanomaterials. Among the Cu2-xS NCs, covellite CuS is emerging as an attractive CE template to produce complicated and metastable metal sulfide NCs. The presence of a reducing agent is essential to induce a phase transition of CuS into other Cu2-xS phases prior to the CE reactions. Nevertheless, the effect of the reducing agent on the phase transition of CuS, especially into the hexagonal close packing (hcp) phase and the cubic close packing (ccp) phase, has been scarcely exploited, but it is highly important for the polymorphic production of metal sulfides with the wurtzite phase and zinc blende phase. Herein, we report a reducing agent dependent pre-phase transition of CuS nanodisks (NDs) into hcp and ccp Cu2-xS NCs. 1-Dodecanethiol molecules and oleylamine molecules selectively reduced CuS NDs into hcp djurleite Cu1.94S NDs and ccp digenite Cu1.8S NCs. Afterward, the hcp Cu1.94S NDs and ccp Cu1.8S NCs were exchanged by Zn2+/Cd2+/Mn2+, and the wurtzite phase and the zinc blende phase of ZnS, CdS, and MnS NCs were produced. Without the pre-phase transition, direct CE reactions of CuS NDs are incapable of synthesizing the above wurtzite and zinc blende metal sulfide NCs. Therefore, our findings suggest the importance of the pre-phase transition of the CE template in polymorphic syntheses, holding great promise in the fabrication of other polymorphic nanomaterials with novel physical and chemical properties.

Manipulating Cation Exchange Reactions in Cu2-xS Nanoparticles via Crystal Structure Transformation

Copper-deficient Cu_2-xS nanoparticles (NPs) are extensively exploited as a superior cation exchange (CE) template to yield sophisticated nanostructures. Recently, it has been discovered that their CE reactions can be facilely manipulated by copper vacancy density, morphology, and NP size. However, the structural similarity of usually utilized Cu_2-xS somewhat limits the manipulation of the CE reactions through the factor of crystal structure because it can strongly influence the process of the reaction. Herein, we report a methodology of crystal structure transformation to manipulate the CE reactions. Particularly, roxbyite Cu_1.8S nanodisks (NDs) were converted into solid wurtzite CdS NDs and Janus-type Cu_1.94S/CdS NDs by a "full"/partial CE reaction with Cd²⁺. Afterward, the roxbyite Cu_1.8S were pseudomorphically transformed into covellite CuS NDs. Unlike Cu_1.8S, the CuS was scarcely exchanged because of the unique disulfide (S-S) bonds and converted into hollow wurtzite CdS under a more reactive condition. The S-S bonds were gradually split and CuS@CdS core@shell-type NDs were generated. Therefore, our findings in the present study provide not only a versatile technique to manipulate CE reactions in Cu_2-xS NPs but also a better comprehension of their reaction dynamics and pathways.

Bridging electrocatalyst and cocatalyst studies for solar hydrogen production via water splitting

Solar-driven water-splitting has been considered as a promising technology for large-scale generation of sustainable energy for succeeding generations. Recent intensive efforts have led to the discovery of advanced multi-element-compound water-splitting electrocatalysts with very small overpotentials in anticipation of their application to solar cell-assisted water electrolysis. Although photocatalytic and photoelectrochemical water-splitting systems are more attractive approaches for scaling up without much technical complexity and high investment costs, improving their efficiencies remains a huge challenge. Hybridizing photocatalysts or photoelectrodes with cocatalysts has been an effective scheme to enhance their overall solar energy conversion efficiencies. However, direct integration of highly-active electrocatalysts as cocatalysts introduces critical factors that require careful consideration. These additional requirements limit the design principle for cocatalysts compared with electrocatalysts, decelerating development of cocatalyst materials. This perspective first summarizes the recent advances in electrocatalyst materials and the effective strategies to assemble cocatalyst/photoactive semiconductor composites, and further discusses the core principles and tools that hold the key in designing advanced cocatalysts and generating a deeper understanding on how to further push the limits of water-splitting efficiency.

Transformations of Ionic Nanocrystals via Full and Partial Ion Exchange Reactions

ConspectusElaborate chemical synthesis methods allow the production of various types of inorganic nanocrystals (NCs) with uniform shape and size distributions. Many single-step synthesis approaches, such as the reduction of metal ions, the decomposition of metal complexes, double replacement reactions, and hydrolysis, have been adapted to promote the generation of monodisperse metal and ionic NCs. However, the question has become, how can we synthesize NCs with thermodynamically metastable phases or very complex structures? The transformation of already-synthesized NCs via elemental substitutions, such as ion exchange reactions for ionic NCs and galvanic replacement reactions for metal NCs, can overcome the difficulties facing conventional one-step syntheses. In particular, NC ion exchange reactions have been studied with numerous combinations of foreign ions and ionic NCs with various shapes. They have been investigated extensively because the reactions proceed under relatively mild conditions thanks to the large surface-to-volume ratio of the NCs relative to their bulk form. The functionality of the resulting ionic NCs, including semiconducting and plasmonic properties, can be easily tuned in a wide range, from the visible to near-infrared. Because anions generally have much larger ionic radii than cations within the frameworks of NCs, the cation exchange reactions proceed much faster than the anion exchange reactions. For ionic NCs above a critical size, the anion framework remains intact, and the original shape of the parent NCs is retained throughout the cation exchange reaction. In contrast, the anion exchange reaction often provides the new NCs with unique structures, such as hollow or anisotropically phase-segregated assemblies.This Account focuses on the full and partial ion exchange reactions involving ionic NCs, which have been thoroughly investigated by our group and others while highlighting important aspects such as the preservation of appearance and dimensions. First, we discuss how each type of ion exchange reaction progresses to understand the morphologies and crystal structures of their final products. This discussion is supported by emphasizing important examples, which help to explore the formation of NCs with thermodynamically metastable phases and complex structures, and other significant features of the ion exchange reactions leading to structure-specific functions. As a special case, we examine how the shape-dependent anionic framework (surface anion sublattice and stacking pattern) of polyhedral Cu₂O NCs determines the crystalline structure of the anion-exchanged products of hollow Cu_xS NCs. In addition, we review the characteristic anion exchange behavior of metal halide perovskite NCs observed in our laboratory and other laboratories. Finally, a general outline of the transformation of NCs via ion exchange reactions and future prospects in this field are provided.

Copper sulfide as the cation exchange template for synthesis of bimetallic catalysts for CO2 electroreduction

Among metals used for CO₂ electroreduction in water, Cu appears to be unique in its ability to produce C2+ products like ethylene. Bimetallic combinations of Cu with other metals have been investigated with the goal of steering selectivity via creating a tandem pathway through the CO intermediate or by changing the surface electronic structure. Here, we demonstrate a facile cation exchange method to synthesize Ag/Cu electrocatalysts for CO₂ reduction using Cu sulfides as a growth template. Beginning with Cu_2−xS nanosheets (C-nano-0, 100 nm lateral dimension, 14 nm thick), varying the Ag⁺ concentration in the exchange solution produces a gradual change in crystal structure from Cu₇S₄ to Ag₂S, as the Ag/Cu mass ratio varies from 0.3 to 25 (CA-nano-x, x indicating increasing Ag fraction). After cation exchange, the nanosheet morphology remains but with increased shape distortion as the Ag fraction is increased. Interestingly, the control (C-nano-0) and cation exchanged nanosheets have very high faradaic efficiency for producing formate at low overpotential (−0.2 V vs. RHE). The primary effect of Ag incorporation is increased production of C2+ products at −1.0 V vs. RHE compared with C-nano-0, which primarily produces formate. Cation exchange can also be used to modify the surface of Cu foils. A two-step electro-oxidation/sulfurization process was used to form Cu sulfides on Cu foil (C-foil-x) to a depth of a few 10 s of microns. With lower Ag⁺ concentrations, cation exchange produces uniformly dispersed Ag; however, at higher concentrations, Ag particles nucleate on the surface. During CO₂ electroreduction testing, the product distribution for Ag/Cu sulfides on Cu foil (CA-foil-x-y) changes in time with an initial increase in ethylene and methane production followed by a decrease as more H₂ is produced. The catalysts undergo a morphology evolution towards a nest-like structure which could be responsible for the change in selectivity. For cation-exchanged nanosheets (CA-nano-x), pre-reduction at negative potentials increases the CO₂ reduction selectivity compared to tests of as-synthesized material, although this led to the aggregation of nanosheets into filaments. Both types of bimetallic catalysts are capable of selective reduction of CO₂ to multi-carbon products, although the optimal configurations appear to be metastable.

Cu sulfides as a template for Ag/Cu sulfide catalysts for electrochemical CO₂. With the introduction of Ag, nanosheet show increased C2+ product generation. The catalysts undergo a morphology evolution as CO₂ reduction proceeds.

Cation-exchange construction of ZnSe/Sb2Se3 hollow microspheres coated by nitrogen-doped carbon with enhanced sodium ion storage capability

Recently, anode materials with synergistic sodium storage mechanisms of conversion combined with alloying reactions for sodium ion batteries (SIBs) have received widespread attention due to their high theoretical capacities. In this work, through reacting with an appropriate concentration of Sb³⁺ ions and a simple carbonization process, hollow ZnSe/Sb₂Se₃ microspheres encapsulated in nitrogen-doped carbon (ZnSe/Sb₂Se₃@NC) are progressively synthesized based on a cation-exchange reaction, using polydopamine-coated ZnSe (ZnSe@PDA) microspheres as the precursor. Benefiting from the synergistic effects between the unique structure and composition characteristics, when serving as an anode material for SIBs, they result in higher sodium diffusion coefficients (8.7 × 10^-13-3.98 × 10^-9 cm² s^-1) and ultrafast pseudocapacitive sodium storage capability. Compared with ZnSe@NC and Sb₂Se₃@NCs exhibit, ZnSe/Sb₂Se₃@NC exhibits more stable capacity (438 mA h g^-1 at a current of 0.5 A g^-1 after 120 cycles) and superior rate performance (316 mA h g^-1 at 10.0 A g^-1). Our work provides a convenient method to construct high performance anodes with tunable composition and structure for energy storage.

Phase selective synthesis of nickel silicide nanocrystals in molten salts for electrocatalysis of the oxygen evolution reaction

We report phase selective synthesis of intermetallic nickel silicide nanocrystals in inorganic molten salts. NiSi and Ni2Si nanocrystals are obtained by reacting a nickel(ii) salt and sodium silicide Na4Si4 in the molten LiI-KI inorganic eutectic salt mixture. We report that nickel silicide nanocrystals are precursors to active electrocatalysts in the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) and may be low-cost alternatives to iridium-based electrocatalysts.
