Electrospun nanofibers of polyelectrolyte-surfactant complexes for antibacterial wound dressing application

Contact-Killing Antibacterial Polystyrene Polymerized Using a Quaternized Cationic Initiator

Contact-killing antibacterial materials are attracting attention owing to their ability for sustained antibacterial activity. However, contact-killing antibacterial polystyrene (PS) has not been extensively studied because its chemically stable structure impedes chemical modification. In this study, we developed an antibacterial PS sheet with a contact-killing surface using PS synthesized from 2,2'-azobis-[2-(1,3-dimethyl-4,5-dihydro-1H-imidazol-3-ium-2-yl)]propane triflate (ADIP) as a radical initiator with cationic moieties. The PS sheet synthesized with ADIP (ADIP-PS) exhibited antibacterial activity in contrast to PS synthesized with other azo radical initiators. Surface ζ-potential measurements revealed that only ADIP-PS had a cationic surface, which contributed to its contact-killing antibacterial activity. The ADIP-PS sheets also exhibited antibacterial activity after washing. In contrast, PS sheets containing silver, a typical leachable antibacterial agent, lost all antibacterial activity after the same washing treatment. The antibacterial ADIP-PS sheet demonstrated strong broad-spectrum activity against both Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria, including drug-resistant bacteria. Cytotoxicity tests using L929 cells showed that the ADIP-PS sheets were noncytotoxic. This contact-killing antibacterial PS synthesized with ADIP thus demonstrated good prospects as an easily producible antimicrobial material.

Polyelectrolyte-Surfactant Complex Nanofibrous Membranes for Antibacterial Applications

Polyelectrolyte-surfactant complexes (PESCs) have garnered significant attention due to their extensive range of biological and industrial applications. Most present applications are predominantly used in liquid or emulsion states, which limits their efficacy in solid material-based applications. Herein, pre-hydrolyzed polyacrylonitrile (HPAN) and quaternary ammonium salts (QAS) are employed to produce PESC electrospun membranes via electrospinning. The formation process of PESCs in a solution is observed. The results show that the degree of PAN hydrolysis and the varying alkyl chain lengths of surfactants affect the rate of PESC formation. Moreover, PESCs/PCL hybrid electrospun membranes are fabricated, and their antibacterial activities against both Gram-negative Escherichia coli (E. coli) and Gram-positive Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus) are investigated. The resulting electrospun membranes exhibit high bactericidal efficacy, which enables them to serve as candidates for future biomedical and filtration applications.

Synthesis, Characterization and Potential Antimicrobial Activity of Selenium Nanoparticles Stabilized with Cetyltrimethylammonium Chloride

Selenium nanoparticles (Se NPs) have a number of unique properties that determine the use of the resulting nanomaterials in various fields. The focus of this paper is the stabilization of Se NPs with cetyltrimethylammonium chloride (CTAC). Se NPs were obtained by chemical reduction in an aqueous medium. The influence of the concentration of precursors and synthesis conditions on the size of Se NPs and the process of micelle formation was established. Transmission electron microscopy was used to study the morphology of Se NPs. The influence of the pH of the medium and the concentration of ions in the sol on the stability of Se micelles was studied. According to the results of this study, the concentration of positively charged ions has a greater effect on the particle size in the positive Se NPs sol than in the negative Se NPs sol. The potential antibacterial and fungicidal properties of the samples were studied on Escherichia coli, Micrococcus luteus and Mucor. Concentrations of Se NPs stabilized with CTAC with potential bactericidal and fungicidal effects were discovered. Considering the revealed potential antimicrobial activity, the synthesized Se NPs-CTAC molecular complex can be further studied and applied in the development of veterinary drugs, pharmaceuticals, and cosmetics.

Recent Progress in Electrospun Polyacrylonitrile Nanofiber-Based Wound Dressing

Bleeding control plays a very important role in worldwide healthcare, which also promotes research and development of wound dressings. The wound healing process involves four stages of hemostasis, inflammation, proliferation and remodeling, which is a complex process, and wound dressings play a huge role in it. Electrospinning technology is simple to operate. Electrospun nanofibers have a high specific surface area, high porosity, high oxygen permeability, and excellent mechanical properties, which show great utilization value in the manufacture of wound dressings. As one of the most popular reactive and functional synthetic polymers, polyacrylonitrile (PAN) is frequently explored to create nanofibers for a wide variety of applications. In recent years, researchers have invested in the application of PAN nanofibers in wound dressings. Research on spun nanofibers is reviewed, and future development directions and prospects of electrospun PAN nanofibers for wound dressings are proposed.

Electrospun polycaprolactone nanofibrous membranes loaded with baicalin for antibacterial wound dressing

Due to the rise in bacterial resistance, the antibacterial extractions from Chinese herbs have been used more frequently for wound care. In this work, baicalin, an extraction from the Chinese herb Scutellaria baicalensis, was utilized as the antibacterial component in the poly(ε-caprolactone)/MXene (PCL/Ti₃C₂T_X) hybrid nanofibrous membranes for wound dressing. The results revealed that the presence of Ti₃C₂T_X aided in the diameter reduction of the electrospun nanofibers. The PCL hybrid membrane containing 3 wt% Ti₃C₂T_X nanoflakes and 5 wt% baicalin exhibited the smallest mean diameter of 210 nm. Meanwhile, the antibacterial tests demonstrated that the PCL ternary hybrid nanofibers containing Ti₃C₂T_X and baicalin exhibited adequate antibacterial activity against the Gram-positive bacterial S. aureus due to the good synergistic effects of Ti₃C₂T_X naoflakes and baicalin. The addition of Ti₃C₂T_X nanoflakes and baicalin could significantly improve the hydrophilicity of the membranes, resulting in the release of baicalin from the nanofibers. In addition, the cytotoxicity of the nanofibers on rat skeletal myoblast L6 cells confirmed their good compatibility with these PCL-based nanofibrous membrances. This work offers a feasible way to prepare antibacterial nanofibrous membranes using Chinese herb extraction for wound dressing applications.

Biodegradable engineered fiber scaffolds fabricated by electrospinning for periodontal tissue regeneration

Considering the specificity of periodontium and the unique advantages of electrospinning, this technology has been used to fabricate biodegradable tissue engineering materials for functional periodontal regeneration. For better biomedical quality, a continuous technological progress of electrospinning has been performed. Based on property of materials (natural, synthetic or composites) and additive novel methods (drug loading, surface modification, structure adjustment or 3 D technique), various novel membranes and scaffolds that could not only relief inflammation but also influence the biological behaviors of cells have been fabricated to achieve more effective periodontal regeneration. This review provides an overview of the usage of electrospinning materials in treatments of periodontitis, in order to get to know the existing research situation and find treatment breakthroughs of the periodontal diseases.

Exploitation of human mesenchymal stromal cell derived matrix towards the structural and functional restoration of the ocular surface

Decellularized matrix of ADMSCs is a promising conjunctival substitute with superb wound repairing property by promoting proliferation of conjunctival epithelial cells and restoring goblet cells without causing cosmetic differences.
