Trace analysis of organophosphorus pesticide residues in fruit juices and vegetables by an electrochemically fabricated solid-phase microextraction fiber coated with a layer-by-layer graphenized graphite/graphene oxide/polyaniline nanocomposite

Exploring the potent hydrolytic activity of chitosan-cerium complex microspheres resin for organophosphorus pesticide degradation

Chitosan is a biocompatible, non-toxic and renewable natural basic polysaccharide that can be cross-linked and reacted with Ce(IV) to form a physiologically active chitosan-Ce(IV) complex. To investigate this novel complex and its potential to hydrolyze phosphate ester bonds, chitosan-cerium complex microspheres resin (CS-CCMR) was prepared from chitosan and ceric ammonium nitrate by reversed-phase suspension cross-linking polymerization. CS-CCMR was characterized, its ability to hydrolyze disodium p-nitrobenzene phosphate (PNPP2Na) and organophosphorus pesticides was investigated, and the hydrolytic mechanism was explored. CS-CCMR was composed of dark yellow microspheres with smooth surfaces and dense pores. It was found that CS-CCMR contained 4.507 mg/g Ce(IV), indicating that coordination polymerization between Ce(IV) and chitosan was successful. The presence of Ce(IV) in CS-CCMR was confirmed by multiple analytical methods and it was found that coordination of Ce(IV) by chitosan was mediated by the nitrogen atom of the amino group and the oxygen atom of the hydroxyl group of chitosan. It was shown that CS-CCMR efficiently hydrolyzed the phosphate ester bonds of PNPP2Na and five organophosphorus pesticides. Hydrolysis of PNPP2Na is potentially accomplished by charge neutralization and nucleophilic substitution. The mechanism of parathion degradation by CS-CCMR involves modification of the nitro group to give aminoparathion, followed by cleavage of the P-O bond to generate diazinphos. Consequently, the novel chitosan-Ce(IV) complex exhibits great efficiency for hydrolysis of phosphate ester bonds and CS-CCMR is expected to be developed as an agent to reduce the possibility of contamination of fruit and vegetable drinks by organophosphorus pesticides.

Nanoporous carbon fiber derived from Cu-BDC metal organic framework @pencil graphite as a sorbent for solid phase microextraction of acetamiprid and imidacloprid

Solid-phase microextraction (SPME) is a sample pretreatment technique for enrichment of trace level of compounds from complex matrices. The fiber coating, as an extraction phase, is the significant part of SPME, which specifying the analytical performance of the developed SPME. In this study, a novel in situ fabricated Cu@porous carbon fiber that derived from copper benzene-1,4-dicarboxylate framework@pencil graphite (Cu-BDC MOF@PG) fiber was prepared as a SPME fiber. The Cu-BDC MOF was electrodeposited on the surface of pencil graphite. The Cu@porous carbon fiber with nanoporous structure was constructed by the direct carbonization of the electrosynthesized fiber. The Cu@porous carbon fiber showed high analytical performance for direct immersion SPME (DI-SPME) of acetamiprid and imidacloprid in fruit and vegetable samples. The SPME method was coupled by high-performance liquid chromatography-ultraviolet detection (SPME-HPLC-UV) for determination of the analytes. Under the optimized condition, good linear ranges (1-500 μg L-1 and 0.5-200 μg L-1) and acceptable limits of detection (LODs = 0.30 and 0.15 μg L-1), appropriate spiking recoveries in the range 87-109.0% were attained for acetamiprid and imidacloprid, respectively. Intra- and inter-day relative standard deviations were found within the ranges of 2.35-3.46% and 3.30-3.70%, respectively. These results signify promising potential of the in situ fabricated porous carbon fiber for SPME applications. Considering that most of the pencil graphite is made of carbon, after the carbonization of the Cu-BDC MOF@PG fiber, a unified porous carbon fiber is obtained. Compared to other reported procedures, in situ direct carbonization of Cu-BDC MOF@PG fiber was a one-step and straightforward method to fabricate carbon fiber.

A scientometric study on application of electrochemical sensors for detection of pesticide using graphene-based electrode modifiers

Pesticide testing is an important topic in environmental protection and food safety. The development of green, accurate and reliable pesticide residue detection methods is an important technical support for implementing of agricultural quality supervision. Electrochemical sensors are a very promising analytical method for pesticide detection due to their high sensitivity, speed, low cost and portability. Performance enhancement of electrochemical sensors is often accompanied by research advances in materials science. Among them, carbon material is a very important electrode material for the fabrication of electrochemical sensors. The discovery of graphene makes it the most promising candidate among carbon materials for sensor performance enhancement. The topic of this review is the use of graphene-modified electrochemical sensors for pesticide detection in the last decade. Traditional literature summaries and bibliometric analyses were used for an in-depth analysis of this topic. In addition to the introduction of different sensor types and performance comparisons, this review also parses the authors' country, keywords and publication frequency. The related research experienced rapid growth several years ago and has now reached a relatively stable stage. We also discuss the perspectives on this topic.

New analytical strategies Amplified with 2D carbon nanomaterials for electrochemical sensing of food pollutants in water and soils sources

Pharmaceutical and food pollutants have threatened global health. Pharmacotherapy has left a positive impression in the field of health and life of people and animals. However, the many unresolved problems brought along with residues of pharmaceuticals in the environmental and food. Consumption of the world's freshwater resources, toxic chemicals, air pollution, plastic waste directly affects water and soil resources. Pesticides have a wide role in pollutants. Therefore, the determination of pesticides is significant to eliminate their negative effects on living things. Nowadays, there are many analytical methods available. However, new analysis methods are still being researched due to certain limitations of traditional methods. Electrochemical sensors have drawn attention because of their superior properties, such as short analysis time, affordability, high sensitivity, and selectivity. The development of new analytical strategies for assessing risks from pharmaceutical to food pollutants in water and soil sources is important for the measurement of different pollutants. Moreover, the 2D-carbon nanomaterials used in the development of electrochemical sensors are widely utilized to enlarge the surface area, increase porosity, and make easy immobilization. Graphene (graphene derivations) and carbon nanotubes integrated nanosensors are widely used for the determination of pesticides. 2D-carbon nanomaterials can be tailored according to the purpose of the study. The characterization and synthesis methods of 2D-carbon nanomaterials are widely explained. Furthermore, enzyme nanobiosensors, especially Acetylcholinesterase (AChE), are widely used to determine pesticides. The three main topics are focused on in this review: 2D-carbon nanomaterials, pesticides that threaten life, and the application of 2D-carbon nanomaterials-based electrochemical sensors. The various developed 2D-carbon nanomaterials-based electrochemical sensors were applied in pharmaceutical forms, fruits, tap/lake water, beverages, and soils sources. This work aims to indicate the recently published paper related to pesticide analysis and highlight the importance of 2D-nanomaterials on sensors.

Chromatographic techniques for the analysis of organophosphate pesticides with their extraction approach: a review (2015-2020)

In agriculture, a wide range of OPPs has been employed to boost crop yield, quality, and storage life. However, due to the ever-increasing population and rapid urbanization, pesticide use has surged in recent years. These compounds are exceedingly poisonous to humans, and despite the fact that specific legislation prohibits their use, the frequency of toxic and/or fatal incidents, as well as current statistics, suggest that they are currently accessible. As a result, determining the exposure to these substances as well as their detection (and that of their metabolites) in different types of exposed samples has become a hot issue in terms of quality and safety concerns. However, developing tools for the evaluation of these substances is a critical challenge for laboratories. Various chromatographic-based methods reported in the period of 2015-2020 have been developed, which are summarized and critically reviewed in this article, including the extraction of the target OPPs from different kinds of matrices. A comparison among the extraction and analysis techniques has been made in the current review article.

Electroanalytical Overview: Electrochemical Sensing Platforms for Food and Drink Safety

Robust, reliable, and affordable analytical techniques are essential for screening and monitoring food and water safety from contaminants, pathogens, and allergens that might be harmful upon consumption. Recent advances in decentralised, miniaturised, and rapid tests for health and environmental monitoring can provide an alternative solution to the classic laboratory-based analytical techniques currently utilised. Electrochemical biosensors offer a promising option as portable sensing platforms to expedite the transition from laboratory benchtop to on-site analysis. A plethora of electroanalytical sensor platforms have been produced for the detection of small molecules, proteins, and microorganisms vital to ensuring food and drink safety. These utilise various recognition systems, from direct electrochemical redox processes to biological recognition elements such as antibodies, enzymes, and aptamers; however, further exploration needs to be carried out, with many systems requiring validation against standard benchtop laboratory-based techniques to offer increased confidence in the sensing platforms. This short review demonstrates that electroanalytical biosensors already offer a sensitive, fast, and low-cost sensor platform for food and drink safety monitoring. With continued research into the development of these sensors, increased confidence in the safety of food and drink products for manufacturers, policy makers, and end users will result.

Fabrication of Co3O4 quantum dot incorporated polyacrylamide ethylene glycol dimethacrylate as a new fiber for solid phase microextraction and trace determination of organophosphorus pesticides in environmental water samples

In this paper, a novel solid phase microextraction fiber based on Co₃O₄ quantum dot incorporated polyacrylamide-co-ethylene glycol dimethacrylate followed by corona discharge ion mobility spectrometry is presented for the trace determination of organophosphorus pesticides in environmental water samples. Ion mobility spectrometry is a comparatively inexpensive, well-known, robust, and easy to operate analytical instrument. This combination would provide a low-cost, fast, selective, and sensitive quantitative system for detection of organophosphorus pesticides. In order to obtain the best extraction efficiency, the optimization of parameters affecting this method was carried out. After optimization, a solution pH of 7.0, extraction temperature of 60 °C, adsorption temperature of 260 °C, extraction time of 30 min, stirring speed of 750 rpm, and ionic strength of 10% w/w were obtained. Consequently, the presented method showed low limits of detection (0.3-0.6 ng mL^-1), excellent enrichment factors (PF = 221-263), good linearity (R² > 0.995), and repeatabilities (intra-day: 3.4 to 4.8%) and (inter-day: 4.7 to 6.1%). The reproducibility (RSD% of fiber to fiber) was also investigated by analyzing three as-prepared fibers under the same conditions and was found to be less than 7.6%. Finally, the developed fiber was used for determination of organophosphorus pesticides in the field samples.

ZrO2 Nanoparticles and Poly(diallyldimethylammonium chloride)-Doped Graphene Oxide Aerogel-Coated Stainless-Steel Mesh for the Effective Adsorption of Organophosphorus Pesticides

A novel sorbent based on the ZrO₂ nanoparticles and poly(diallyldimethylammonium chloride)-modified graphene oxide aerogel-grafted stainless steel mesh (ZrO₂/PDDA-GOA-SSM) was used for the extraction and detection of organophosphorus pesticides (OPPs). Firstly, the PDDA and GO composite was grafted onto the surface of SSM and then freeze-dried to obtain the aerogel, which efficiently reduced the accumulation of graphene nanosheets. It integrated the advanced properties of GOA with a thin coating and the three-dimensional structural geometry of SSM. The modification of ZrO₂ nanoparticles brought a selective adsorption for OPPs due to the combination of the phosphate group as a Lewis base and ZrO₂ nanoparticles with the Lewis acid site. The ZrO₂/PDDA-GOA-SSM was packed into the solid-phase extraction (SPE) cartridge to extract OPPs. According to the investigation of different factors, the extraction recovery was mainly affected by the hydrophilic-hydrophobic properties of analytes. Effective extraction and elution parameters such as sample volume, sample pH, rate of sample loading, eluent, and eluent volume, were also investigated and discussed. Under the optimal conditions, the linearity of phoxim and fenitrothion was in the range of 1.0-200 μg L^-1, and the linearity of temephos was in the range of 2.5-200 μg L^-1. The limits of detection were ranged from 0.2 to 1.0 μg L^-1. This established method was successfully applied to detect OPPs in two vegetables. There was no OPP detected in real samples, and results showed that the matrix effects were in the range of 46.5%-90.1%. This indicates that the ZrO₂/PDDA-GOA-SSM-SPE-HPLC method could effectively extract and detect OPPs in vegetables.

New frontiers and prospects of metal-organic frameworks for removal, determination, and sensing of pesticides

Pesticides have been widely used in agriculture to control, reduce, and kill insects. Humans are also being using pesticides to control insidious animals in daily life. By these practices, a huge volume of pesticides is introduced to the environment. Despite broad-spectrum applicability, pesticides also have hazardous effects on both humans and animals at high and low concentrations. Long-term exposure to pesticides can cause different diseases, like leukemia, lymphoma, and cancers of the brain, breasts, prostate, testis, and ovaries. Reproductive disorders from pesticides include birth defects, stillbirth, spontaneous abortion, sterility, and infertility. Therefore, the application of determination and treatment methods for pre-concentration and removal of these toxic materials from the environment appears a vital concern. To date, different materials and approaches have been employed for these purposes. Among these approaches, multifunctional metal-organic frameworks (MOFs)-assisted adsorption and determination processes have always been in the spotlight. These facts are due to exclusive properties of MOFs in terms of the crystallinity, large surface area, high chemical, and physical stability, and controllable structure as well as unique features of adsorption and determination process in terms of simple, easy, cheap, available method and ability to use in large and industrial scales. In the present work, we illustrate the exceptional features of MOFs as well as the possible mechanism for the adsorption of pesticides by MOFs. The use of these fantastic materials for pre-concentration and removal of pesticides are extensively explored. In addition, the performance of MOFs was compared with other adsorbents. Finally, the new frontiers and prospects of MOFs for the determination, sensing, and removal of pesticides are presented.

New Trend in the Extraction of Pesticides from the Environmental and Food Samples Applying Microextraction Based Green Chemistry Scenario: A Review

This review focused on the green microextraction methods used for the extraction of pesticides from the environmental and food samples. Microextraction techniques have been explored and applied in various fields of analytical chemistry since its beginning, as evinced by the numerous reviews published. The success of any technique in science and technology is measured by the simplicity, environmentally friendly, and its applications; and the microextraction technique is highly successive. Deliberations were attentive to studies where efforts have been made to validate the methods through the inter-laboratory comparison study to assess the analytical performance of microextraction techniques against conventional methods. Succinctly, developed microextraction methods are shown to impart significant benefits over conventional techniques. Provided that the analytical community continues to put forward attention and resources into the growth and validation of the microextraction technique, a promising future for microextraction is forecasted.
