Fabrication of an electrochemical sensor based on metal-organic framework ZIF-8 for quantitation of silver ions: optimizing experimental conditions using central composite design (CCD)

Zeolitic imidazolate framework-8/polyaniline nanocomposite-based electrochemical sensor for sensitive detection of imidaclothiz

Imidaclothiz (IMZ) is a class of neonicotinoid insecticide which can pose potential threat to human health and be frequently detected in water and foods. Herein, a zeolitic imidazolate framework-8/polyaniline (ZIF-8/PANI) nanocomposite has been modified on the surface of glassy carbon electrode (GCE) for the electrochemical determination of IMZ, and the electrochemical detection performance of the modified electrode was investigated by cyclic voltammetry (CV) and square wave voltammetry (SWV). With the large surface area of ZIF-8 and great electric conductivity of PANI, the ZIF-8/PANI-modified electrode showed a high catalytic performance towards IMZ reduction in PBS. Under the optimized conditions, the linear range was from 1.0 × 10-7 to 1.0 × 10-5 mol/L and the limit of detection was as low as 2.5 × 10-8 mol/L (S/N = 3). In addition, the developed sensor displayed high reproducibility, excellent stability, and applicability in real vegetable sample analysis, indicating that the proposed method offered an alternative approach for IMZ residues analysis.

Electrochemical (bio)sensors based on carbon quantum dots, ionic liquid and gold nanoparticles for bisphenol A

Electrochemical (bio)sensors were developed for bisphenol A (BPA) determination. Screen printed carbon electrode (SPCE) was modified with ionic liquid 1- butyl-3-methylimidazolium tetrafluoroborate (IL), carbon quantum dots (CQD) and gold nanoparticles (AuNP) for the fabrication of the BPA sensor. Electrode surface composition was optimized for the deposition time of AuNP, amount of CQD and percentage of IL using the central composite design (CCD) method. The results of the CCD study indicated that maximum amperometric response was recorded when 9.8 μg CQD, 3% IL and 284 s AuNP deposition time were used in modification. Tyrosinase (Ty) was further modified on the AuNP/CQD-IL/SPCE to fabricate the biosensor. Analytical performance characteristics of the BPA sensor were investigated by differential pulse anodic adsorptive stripping voltammetry and the AuNP/CQD-IL/SPCE sensor exhibited a linear response to BPA in the range of 2.0 × 10^-8 - 3.6 × 10^-6 M with a detection limit of 1.1 × 10^-8 M. Amperometric measurements showed that the linear dynamic range and detection limit of the Ty/AuNP/CQD-IL/SPCE were 2.0 × 10^-8 - 4.0 × 10^-6 M and 6.2 × 10^-9 M, respectively. Analytical performance characteristics such as sensitivity, reproducibility and selectivity were investigated for the presented (bio)sensors. The analytical applicability of the (bio)sensors to the analysis of BPA in mineral water samples was also tested.

Engineering of metal-organic framework nanomaterials on long-period fiber grating for acetone vapor sensing

Metal-organic framework (MOF) material is one of the most promising porous nanomaterials for volatile organic compound (VOC) adsorption and sensing. The large surface area and the high porosity of MOF contribute to the high sensitivity of MOF-based VOC sensors. In this study, we engineer the coating of the zeolitic imidazolate framework material ZIF-8 grown on the surface of a long-period fiber grating (LPFG) for acetone vapor sensing. Being a periodic structure formed in a single-mode optical fiber, an LPFG is designed to couple light from the core to the cladding of the fiber at a specific resonance wavelength. Adsorption of acetone vapor molecules in the framework of the ZIF-8 coating can change the refractive index of the coating and cause a shift in the resonance wavelength of the LPFG. The sensitivity of the resonance shift of the LPFG to the acetone vapor concentration depends strongly on the thickness of the ZIF-8 coating. To create a dense ZIF-8 coating, at least five growth cycles of ZIF-8 (30 min growth for one cycle) are required, and nine growth cycles can create a 500 nm thick coating. The LPFG coated with nine growth cycles of ZIF-8 provides a high sensitivity of 21.9 nm ppm^-1, a low detection limit of 1.4 ppm, and a wide detection range of about 1500 ppm. Our results can facilitate the development of high-performance optical fiber sensors based on MOF for VOC detection.

Optimization of uric acid detection with Au nanorod-decorated graphene oxide (GO/AuNR) using response surface methodology

A modified glassy carbon electrode (GCE) was developed based on a synthesized graphene oxide (GO) gold nanorod (AuNR) decorated composite (GO/AuNR) for sensitive electrochemical sensing of uric acid (UA). The electrochemical performance of GO/AuNR/GCE for UA detection was investigated employing the differential pulse voltammetry (DPV) technique. Central composite design (CCD) was applied to obtain the optimum composition of the GO and AuNR composite, which provide the highest possible UA oxidation peak current. The optimum composition was obtained at a GO concentration of 5 mg mL⁻¹ and AuNR volume of 10 mL. Under the optimum conditions, GO/AuNR/GCE showed acceptable analytical performance for UA detection with good linearity (concentration range of 10–90 μM) and both a low detection limit (0.4 μM) and quantitation limit (1.0 μM). Furthermore, the proposed sensor exhibits superior stability, reproducibility, and selectivity using ascorbic acid (AA), dopamine (DA), urea, glucose, and magnesium as interferents. Finally, practical use of GO/AuNR/GCE was demonstrated by successfully determining the content of UA in human urine samples with the standard addition approach.
