Activation and functionalisation of carbon dioxide by bis-tris(pyrazolyl)borate-supported divalent samarium and trivalent lanthanide silylamide complexes

Synthesis and reactivity with carbon dioxide (CO2) of divalent samarium in the bis-tris(pyrazolyl)borate ligand environment has been reported. In addition, CO2 activation and functionalisation by lanthanide silylamides in the bis-tris(pyrazolyl)borate ligand environment was demonstrated. Reduction of the Sm(III) precursor [Sm(Tp)2(OTf)] (Tp = hydrotris(1-pyrazolyl)borate; OTf = triflate) with KC8 yielded the insoluble Sm(II) multi-metallic coordination polymer [{Sm(Tp)2}n] 1-Sm. Addition of 1,2-dimethoxyethane (DME) to 1-Sm enabled isolation of the monomeric complex [Sm(Tp)2(DME)] 1-Sm(DME). Complex 1-Sm(DME) reduced CO2 to yield the oxalate-bridged dimeric Sm(III) complex [{Sm(Tp)2}2(μ-η2:η2-O2CCO2)] 2-Sm. The reactions of heteroleptic Ln(III) silylamide complexes [Ln(Tp)2(N'')] (Ln = Y, Sm; N'' = N(SiMe3)2) with CO2 yielded monomeric Ln(III) silyloxides [Ln(Tp)2(OSiMe3)] 3-Ln and trimethylsilyl isocyanate (OCNSiMe3). Complexes 3-Ln are the first crystallographically characterised examples of Ln(III)-OSiMe3 bonds accessed via CO2 activation and functionalisation. Full characterisation data are presented for all complexes, including solid-state molecular structure determination by single-crystal X-ray diffraction.

Coercive Fields Exceeding 30 T in the Mixed-Valence Single-Molecule Magnet (CpiPr5)2Ho2I3

Mixed-valence dilanthanide complexes of the type (CpiPr5)2Ln2I3 (CpiPr5 = pentaisopropylcyclopentadienyl; Ln = Gd, Tb, Dy) featuring a direct Ln-Ln σ-bonding interaction have been shown to exhibit well-isolated high-spin ground states and, in the case of the Tb and Dy variants, a strong axial magnetic anisotropy that gives rise to a large magnetic coercivity. Here, we report the synthesis and characterization of two new mixed-valence dilanthanide compounds in this series, (CpiPr5)2Ln2I3 (1-Ln; Ln = Ho, Er). Both compounds feature a Ln-Ln bonding interaction, the first such interaction in any molecular compounds of Ho or Er. Like the Tb and Dy congeners, both complexes exhibit high-spin ground states arising from strong spin-spin coupling between the lanthanide 4f electrons and a single σ-type lanthanide-lanthanide bonding electron. Beyond these similarities, however, the magnetic properties of the two compounds diverge. In particular, 1-Er does not exhibit observable magnetic blocking or slow magnetic relaxation, while 1-Ho exhibits magnetic blocking below 28 K, which is the highest temperature among Ho-based single-molecule magnets, and a spin reversal barrier of 556(4) cm-1. Additionally, variable-field magnetization data collected for 1-Ho reveal a coercive field of greater than 32 T below 8 K, more than 6-fold higher than observed for the bulk magnets SmCo5 and Nd2Fe14B, and the highest coercive field reported to date for any single-molecule magnet or molecule-based magnetic material. Multiconfigurational calculations, supported by far-infrared magnetospectroscopy data, reveal that the stark differences in magnetic properties of 1-Ho and 1-Er arise from differences in the local magnetic anisotropy of the lanthanide centers.

Constructing high axiality mononuclear dysprosium molecular magnets via a regulation-of-co-ligands strategy

Two lanthanide complexes with formulae [DyIII(LN5)(pentafluoro-PhO)3] (1) and [DyIII(LN5)(2,6-difluoro-PhO)2](BPh4) (2) (LN5 = 2,14-dimethyl-3,6,10,13,19-pentaazabicyclo[13.3.1]nonadecal (19),2,13,15,17-pentaene) were structurally and magnetically characterized. DyIII ions lie in the cavity of a five coordinate nitrogen macrocycle, and in combination with the introduction of multi-fluorinated monodentate phenoxyl coligands a high axiality coordination symmetry is built. Using the pentafluorophenol co-ligand, complex 1 with a D2d coordination environment, is obtained and displays moderate single-molecule magnets (SMMs) behavior. When difluorophenol co-ligands were used, a higher local axisymmetric pentagonal bipyramidal coordination geometry was observed in complex 2, which displays apparent slow magnetic relaxation behavior with a hysteresis temperature of up to 5 K. Further magnetic studies of diluted samples combined with ab initio calculations indicate that the high axiality plays a crucial role in suppressing quantum tunneling of magnetization (QTM) and consequently results in good slow magnetic relaxation behavior. Different fluoro-substituted phenoxyl co-ligands have phenoloxy oxygen atoms with different electrostatic potentials as well as a different number of phenoloxy coligands along the magnetic axis, resulting in different ligand field strengths and coordination symmetries.

A Combined Synthetic, Magnetic, and Theoretical Study on Enhancing Ligand-Field Axiality for Dy(III) Single-Molecule Magnets Supported by Ferrocene Diamide Ligands

Molecular design is crucial for improving the performance of single-molecule magnets (SMMs). For dysprosium(III) SMMs, enhancing ligand-field axiality is a well-suited strategy to achieve high-performance SMMs. We synthesized a series of dysprosium(III) complexes, (NN^TIPS)DyBr(THF)₂ (1, NN^TIPS = fc(NSiⁱPr₃)₂; fc = 1,1'-ferrocenediyl, THF = tetrahydrofuran), [(NN^TIPS)Dy(THF)₃][BPh₄] (2), (NN^TIPS)DyI(THF)₂ (3), and [(NN^TBS)Dy(THF)₃][BPh₄] (4, NN^TBS = fc(NSi^tBuMe₂)₂), supported by ferrocene diamide ligands. X-ray crystallography shows that the rigid ferrocene backbone enforces a nearly axial ligand field with weakly coordinating equatorial ligands. Dysprosium(III) complexes 1-4 all exhibit slow magnetic relaxation under zero fields and possess high effective barriers (U_eff) around 1000 K, comparable to previously reported (NN^TBS)DyI(THF)₂ (5). We probed the influences of structural variations on SMM behaviors by theoretical calculations and found that the distribution of negative charges defined by r_q, i.e., the ratio of the charges on the axial ligands to the charges on the equatorial ligands, plays a decisive role. Moreover, theoretical calculations on a series of model complexes 1'-5' without equatorial ligands unveil that the axial crystal-field parameters B₂⁰ are directly proportional to the N-Dy-N angles and support the hypothesis that enhancing the ligand-field axiality could improve SMM performance.

Recent Progress for Single-Molecule Magnets Based on Rare Earth Elements

Single-molecule magnets (SMMs) have attracted much attention due to their potential applications in molecular spintronic devices. Rare earth SMMs are considered to be the most promising for application owing to their large magnetic moment and strong magnetic anisotropy. In this review, the recent progress in rare earth SMMs represented by mononuclear and dinuclear complexes is highlighted, especially for the modulation of magnetic anisotropy, effective energy barrier (U_eff) and blocking temperature (T_B). The terbium- and dysprosium-based SMMs have a U_eff of 1541 cm^-1 and an increased T_B of 80 K. They break the boiling point temperature of liquid nitrogen. The development of the preparation technology of rare earth element SMMs is also summarized in an overview. This review has important implications and insights for the design and research of Ln-SMMs.

Axial Ligand as a Critical Factor for High-Performance Pentagonal Bipyramidal Dy(III) Single-Ion Magnets

The choice of axial ligands is of great importance for the construction of high-performance Dy-based single-molecule magnets (SMMs). Here, combining axial ligands Ph₃SiO^- (anion of triphenylsilanol) and 2,6-dichloro-4-nitro-PhO^- (the anion of 2,6-dichloro-4-nitrophenol) with a neutral macrocyclic ligand 2,14-dimethyl-3,6,10,13,19-pentaazabicyclo[13.3.1]nonadeca-1(19),2,13,15,17-pentaene (L₂^N5) generates two new pentagonal bipyramidal Dy(III) complexes [Dy^III(L₂^N5) (X)₂](BPh₄) (X = Ph₃SiO^-, 1; 2,6-dichloro-4-nitro-PhO^-, 2) with strong axial ligand fields. Magnetic characterizations show that 1 possesses a large energy barrier above 1000 K and a magnetic hysteresis up to 9 K, whereas 2 only displays field-induced peaks of alternating-current susceptibilities without the hysteresis loop, even though 2 has a similar coordination geometry with 1. Detailed Ab initio calculations indicate an apparent difference in the axial negative charge between both complexes, which is caused by the diverse electron-donating properties of the axial ligands. The present work provides an efficient strategy to enhance the SMMs' properties, which highlights that the electron-donating property of the axial ligands is especially important for constructing the high-performance Dy-based SMMs.

Magnetic anisotropy of transition metal and lanthanide ions in pentagonal bipyramidal geometry

The magnetic anisotropy associated with a pentagonal bipyramidal (PBP) coordination sphere is examined on the basis of experimental and theoretical investigations. The origin and the characteristics of this anisotropy are discussed in relation to the electronic configuration of the metal ions. The effects of crystal field, structural distortion, and a second-coordination sphere on the observed anisotropies for transition meal and lanthanide ions are outlined. For the Ln derivatives, we focus on compounds showing SMM-like behavior (i.e. slow relaxation of their magnetization) in order to highlight the essential chemical and structural parameters for achieving strong axial anisotropy. The use of PBP complexes to impart controlled magnetic anisotropy in polynuclear species such as SMMs or SCMs is also addressed. This review of the magnetic anisotropies associated with a pentagonal bipyramidal coordination sphere for transition metal and lanthanide ions is intended to highlight some general trends that can guide chemists towards designing a compound with specific properties.

Tuning the Equatorial Negative Charge in Hexagonal Bipyramidal Dysprosium(III) Single-Ion Magnets to Improve the Magnetic Behavior

Taking advantage of the pentaethylene glycol (EO5) and deprotonation of EO5, a family of new structurally hexagonal bipyramidal Dy(III) complexes, [Dy(EO5)(2,6-dichloro-4-nitro-PhO)₂](2,6-dichloro-4-nitro-PhO) (1), [Dy(EO5-BPh₂)(2,6-dichloro-4-nitro-PhO)₂] (2), and [Dy(EO5-BPh₂)(2,6-dichloro-4-nitro-PhO)Cl] (3), were controbllably synthesized and structurally characterized. Magnetic measurements show that complex 1 is a zero-field SIM and has an observable hysteresis opening up to 4 K. Conversely, only under extra magnetic field is slow magnetic relaxation observed in 2 and 3. This considerable difference in the magnetic behavior is mainly caused by the change of the equatorial negative charge. Detailed ab initio calculations further elucidate that the quantum tunneling is induced by the presence of equatorial negative charge, and the magnetic anisotropy depends on the axial ligands. This work demonstrates that the absence of the equatorial negative charge should also be considered in the rational design of promising single molecular magnets based on the oblate ions.

Single-Molecule Magnets beyond a Single Lanthanide Ion: The Art of Coupling

The promising future of storing and processing quantized information at the molecular level has been attracting the study of Single-Molecule Magnets (SMMs) for almost three decades. Although some recent breakthroughs are mainly about the SMMs containing only one lanthanide ion, we believe SMMs can tell a much deeper story than the single-ion anisotropy. Here in this Perspective, we will try to draw a unified picture of SMMs as a delicately coupled spin system between multiple spin centres. The hierarchical couplings will be presented step-by-step, from the intra-atomic hyperfine coupling, to the direct and indirect intra-molecular couplings with neighbouring spin centres, and all the way to the inter-molecular and spin–phonon couplings. Along with the discussions on their distinctive impacts on the energy level structures and thus magnetic behaviours, a promising big picture for further studies is proposed, encouraging the multifaceted developments of molecular magnetism and beyond.

In this Perspective, we draw a unified picture for single-molecule magnets as delicately coupled spin systems, discuss the hierarchical couplings (from intra-atomic to inter-molecular) and their distinctive impacts on the magnetic behaviours.

Magnetic anisotropies of Ho(III) and Dy(III) single-molecule magnets experimentally determined via polarized neutron diffraction

We present the magnetic anisotropy of two isostructural pentagonal-bipyramidal complexes, [Ln(H₂O)₅(HMPA)₂]I₃·2HMPA (HMPA = hexamethylphosphoramide, Ln = Dy, Ho). Using ac magnetic susceptibility measurements, we find magnetic relaxation barriers of 600 K and 270 K for the Dy- and Ho-compounds, respectively. This difference is supported by polarized neutron diffraction (PND) measured at 5 K and 1 T which provides the first experimental evidence that the transverse elements in the magnetic anisotropy of the Ho-analogue are significant, whereas the Dy-analogue has a near-axial magnetic anisotropy with vanishing transverse contributions. The coordination geometries of the two complexes are highly similar, and we attribute the loss of strong magnetic axiality as expressed in the atomic susceptibility tensors from PND, as well as the smaller relaxation barrier in the Ho-complex compared to the Dy-complex, to the less favorable interaction of the pentagonal bipyramidal crystal field with the characteristics of the Ho(III) 4f-charge distribution.

Holmium(III) Single-Ion Magnet for Cryomagnetic Refrigeration Based on an MRI Contrast Agent Derivative

The coexistence of field-induced blockage of the magnetization and significant magnetocaloric effects in the low-temperature region occurs in a mononuclear holmium(III) diethylenetriamine-N,N,N',N″,N″-pentaacetate complex, whose gadolinium(III) analogue is a commercial MRI contrast agent. Both properties make it a suitable candidate for cryogenic magnetic refrigeration, thus enlarging the variety of applications of this simple class of multifunctional molecular nanomagnets.

Enhancing the energy barrier and hysteresis temperature in two benchtop-stable Ho(iii) single-ion magnets

The energy barrier and hysteresis temperature in two benchtop-stable D_5h-symmetry Ho^III single-ion magnets were significantly enhanced via the variation of the halogen anion. The coexistence of a high energy barrier of 418 K and hysteresis temperature of 15 K was observed in the bromide-ion containing Ho^III single-ion magnet.

Mononuclear Dysprosium Alkoxide and Aryloxide Single-Molecule Magnets

Recent studies have shown that mononuclear lanthanide (Ln) complexes can be high‐performing single‐molecule magnets (SMMs). Recently, there has been an influx of mononuclear Ln alkoxide and aryloxide SMMs, which have provided the necessary geometrical control to improve SMM properties and to allow the intricate relaxation dynamics of Ln SMMs to be studied in detail. Here non‐aqueous Ln alkoxide and aryloxide chemistry applied to the synthesis of low‐coordinate mononuclear Ln SMMs are reviewed. The focus is on mononuclear Dy^III alkoxide and aryloxide SMMs with coordination numbers up to eight, covering synthesis, solid‐state structures and magnetic attributes. Brief overviews are also provided of mononuclear Tb^III, Ho^III, Er^III and Yb^III alkoxide and aryloxide SMMs.

Holmium(iii) molecular nanomagnets for optical thermometry exploring the luminescence re-absorption effect

Coordination complexes of lanthanide(3+) ions can combine Single-Molecule Magnetism (SMM) with thermally modulated luminescence applicable in optical thermometry. We report an innovative approach towards high performance SMM-based optical thermometers which explores tunable anisotropy and the luminescence re-absorption effect of HoIII complexes. Our concept is shown in dinuclear cyanido-bridged molecules, {[HoIII(4-pyridone)4(H2O)2][MIII(CN)6]}·nH2O (M = Co, 1; Rh, 2; Ir, 3) and their magnetically diluted analogues, {[HoIII x YIII 1-x (4-pyridone)4(H2O)2][MIII(CN)6]}·nH2O (M = Co, x = 0.11, 1@Y; Rh, x = 0.12, 2@Y; Ir, x = 0.10, 3@Y). They are built of pentagonal bipyramidal HoIII complexes revealing the zero-dc-field SMM effect. Experimental studies and the ab initio calculations indicate an Orbach magnetic relaxation with energy barriers varying from 89.8 to 86.7 and 78.7 cm-1 K for 1, 2, and 3, respectively. 1-3 also differ in the strength of quantum tunnelling of magnetization which is suppressed by hyperfine interactions, and, further, by the magnetic dilution. The YIII-based dilution governs the optical properties as 1-3 exhibit poor emission due to the dominant re-absorption from HoIII while 1@Y-3@Y show room-temperature blue emission of 4-pyridone. Within ligand emission bands, the sharp re-absorption lines of the HoIII electronic transitions were observed. Their strong thermal variation was used in achieving highly sensitive ratiometric optical thermometers whose good performance ranges, lying between 25 and 205 K, are adjustable by using hexacyanidometallates. This work shows that HoIII complexes are great prerequisites for advanced opto-magnetic systems linking slow magnetic relaxation with unique optical thermometry exploiting a luminescence re-absorption phenomenon.
