Abstract
Three unique dl-malic acid covalently modified tetra-Ln3+-implanted tellurotungstates [H2(CH3)2]9NaH9[Ln4(H2O)14W6O13(OH)5(Mal)2(B-α-TeW9O33)4]·48H2O [Ln = La3+ (1), Ce3+ (2), Pr3+ (3); H3Mal = dl-malic acid] were fabricated by reacting Na2TeO3, Na2WO4·2H2O, Mal, and LnCl3·6H2O with dimethylamine hydrochloride in an aqueous solution. The most prominent architectural feature of these compounds is the covalent connection mode of an organic ligand and a polyoxometallate backbone, which is relatively rare in the realm of polyoxotungstates. The tetrameric polyanion can be deemed as four [TeW9O33]8- fragments fused together via an intriguing hexanuclearity [W6O13(OH)5(Mal)2Ln4(H2O)14]13+ cluster. Impedance measurements manifest that all three complexes display splendid proton conduction properties, with an exceptional conductivity for 2 up to 2.48 × 10-2 S·cm-1 under 85 °C and 95% relative humidity. Moreover, compounds 1 and 3 exhibited fast reversible photochromic properties with allochroic half-life periods t1/2 of 1.046 and 0.544 min, respectively.

Abstract
Since the last century, we have witnessed the development of molecular magnetism which deals with magnetic materials based on molecular species, i.e., organic radicals and metal complexes. Among them, the broadest attention was devoted to molecule-based ferro-/ferrimagnets, spin transition materials, including those exploring electron transfer, molecular nanomagnets, such as single-molecule magnets (SMMs), molecular qubits, and stimuli-responsive magnetic materials. Their physical properties open the application horizons in sensors, data storage, spintronics, and quantum computation. It was found that various optical phenomena, such as thermochromism, photoswitching of magnetic and optical characteristics, luminescence, nonlinear optical and chiroptical effects, as well as optical responsivity to external stimuli, can be implemented into molecule-based magnetic materials. Moreover, the fruitful interactions of these optical effects with magnetism in molecule-based materials can provide new physical cross-effects and multifunctionality, enriching the applications in optical, electronic, and magnetic devices. This Review aims to show the scope of optical phenomena generated in molecule-based magnetic materials, including the recent advances in such areas as high-temperature photomagnetism, optical thermometry utilizing SMMs, optical addressability of molecular qubits, magneto-chiral dichroism, and opto-magneto-electric multifunctionality. These findings are discussed in the context of the types of optical phenomena accessible for various classes of molecule-based magnetic materials.

Abstract
The raising apprehension of volatile organic compound (VOC) exposures urges the exploration of advanced monitoring platforms. Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) provide many attractive features including tailorable porosity, high surface areas, good chemical/thermal stability, and various host-guest interactions, making them appealing candidates for VOC capture and sensing. To comprehensively exploit the potential of MOFs as sensing materials, great efforts have been dedicated to the shaping and patterning of MOFs for next-level device integration. Among different types of sensors (chemiresistive sensors, gravimetric sensors, optical sensors, etc.), MOFs coupled with optical sensors feature distinctive strength. This review summarized the latest advancements in MOF-based optical sensors with a particular focus on VOC sensing. The subject is discussed by different mechanisms: colorimetry, luminescence, and sensors based on optical index modulations. Critical analysis for each system highlighting practical aspects was also deliberated.

Abstract
When the N- and O-donor ligands are combined as coligands, two noncentrosymmetric (NCS) complexes of [Ni(p-bdc)(tipa)(H2O)2]2·H2O (1) and Ni(npdc)(tipa)H2O (2) [tipa = tris[4-(1H-imidazol-1-yl)phenyl]amine, p-H2bdc = 1,4-benzenedicarboxylic acid, and H2npdc = 2,6-naphthalenedicarboxylic acid] were achieved under solvothermal conditions. For both structures, N-donor ligands are responsible for the generation of a layered structure, while the O-donor ligands are hung on the layers and are responsible for enhancing the polarity, giving rise to the NCS structures. Because of the different connection modes between the metal centers and different carboxylate ligands (p-bdc2- in 1 and npdc2- in 2), 1 and 2 show some structural differences. The p-bdc2- ligands in 1 are suspended on the upper and lower sides of the [Ni(tipa)]n layers, while all of the npdc2- ligands in 2 hang on one side of the [Ni(tipa)]n layers and point in the same direction, which makes the two NCS complexes show phase-matchable behavior with different second-harmonic-generation (SHG) responses of about 0.9 and 1.5 times that of KH2PO4 (KDP), respectively. Theoretical studies reveal that charge transfers between Ni2+ and carboxylate ligands make the dominant contribution to the optical properties. It is expected that a dual-ligand strategy may guide the design of novel superior-performing NCS complexes.

Abstract
Atomically thin transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) present extraordinary optoelectronic, electrochemical, and mechanical properties that have not been accessible in bulk semiconducting materials. Recently, a new research field, 2D hybrid heteromaterials, has emerged upon integrating TMDs with molecular systems, including organic molecules, polymers, metal-organic frameworks, and carbonaceous materials, that can tailor the TMD properties and exploit synergetic effects. TMD-based hybrid heterostructures can meet the demands of future optoelectronics, including supporting flexible, transparent, and ultrathin devices, and energy-based applications, offering high energy and power densities with long cycle lives. To realize such applications, it is necessary to understand the interactions between the hybrid components and to develop strategies for exploiting the distinct benefits of each component. Here, we provide an overview of the current understanding of the new phenomena and mechanisms involved in TMD/organic hybrids and potential applications harnessing such valuable materials in an insightful way. We highlight recent discoveries relating to multicomponent hybrid materials. Finally, we conclude this review by discussing challenges related to hybrid heteromaterials and presenting future directions and opportunities in this research field.

Abstract
Hybrid photochromic materials (HPMs) with specific photoresponsive functionality have applications in many fields. The photoinduced electron-transfer (ET) strategy has been proved to be effective in the synthesis of HPMs with diverse photomodulated properties. The exploitation of new electron acceptors (EAs) is meaningful for promoting the development of HPMs. In this work, we introduced a rigid tetraimidazole derivative, 3,3,5,5-tetra(imidazol-1-yl)-1,1-biphenyl (TIBP) as a potential EA, into a metal-diphosphonate (1-hydroxyethylidene-1,1-diphosphonic acid, H4-HEDP) system to explore HPMs and finally obtained a hybrid metal phosphonate (H4-TIBP)0.5·[Dy(H-HEDP) (H2-HEDP)]·H2O (1). 1 features anionic chains composed of diphosphonate and Dy3+ ions. The extra charge is balanced by protonated TIBP cations, which exist in the void of adjacent chains and form H-bonds with Ophosphonate (N-H···O). Upon photostimulation with a Xe lamp (300 W), the crystalline sample 1 exhibited coloration by changing from colorless to pale yellow because of the presence of photoinduced radicals that originated from the ET from Ophosphonate to NTIBP. Along with the coloration, photomodulated fluorescence, magnetism, and proton conductivity were also detected in the photoactivated samples. Different from the reported HPMs based on polypyridine derivatives and photoactive species such as pyridinium and naphthalimide derivatives as EAs, our study provides a new category of EA units to yield HPMs with fascinating photoresponsive functionality via the assembly of polyimidazole derivatives and phosphonate-based supramolecular building blocks.

Abstract
Three anionic metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) {[Zn3(BTEC)2(H2O)(4-BCBPY)]·(H2O)} n (1-3) (BTEC4- = 1,2,4,5-benzenetetracarboxylic acid anion, 4-BCBPY2+ = 1,1'-bis(4-cyanobenzyl)-4,4'-bipyridinium dication) were synthesized in the reaction of 1,2,4,5-benzenetetracarboxylic acid with different metal salts such as ZnNO3, ZnCl2, and ZnSO4, under solvothermal conditions in the presence of 1,1'-bis(4-cyanobenzyl)-4,4'-bipyridinium chloride. Single crystal X-ray diffraction analysis shows that compounds 1, 2 and 3 have MOF structures based on binuclear metal building units, which are connected by two protonated BTEC4- ligands and three zinc ions, and the viologen cation 4-BCBPY2+ is located in the channel to achieve charge balance. Compounds 1, 2 and 3 have good photosensitivity, respond to sunlight, UV light and blue ray, and turn blue. The D-A distance and π-π stacking distance of the discolored samples (1P, 2P and 3P) changed. In addition, the three compounds showed visible color changes to ammonia vapor, rapidly changing from white to blue. At the same time, the three compounds exhibited fluorescence quenching to ammonia vapor and Cr2O7 2-. It is further proved that compounds 1, 2 and 3 are fluorescent sensors with a low detection limit (for Cr2O7 2-: 10-5 M) and high sensitivity for ammonia vapor and Cr2O7 2-. It was found that photochromic behavior, ammonia sensing properties can be tuned by the nature of metal salts.

Abstract
The exchangeable counterions in ionic metal-organic frameworks (IMOFs) provide facile and versatile handles to manipulate functions associated with the ionic guests themselves and host-guest interactions. However, anion-exchangeable stable IMOFs combining multiple anion-related functions are still undeveloped. In this work, a novel porous IMOF featuring unique self-penetration was constructed from an electron-deficient tris(pyridinium)-tricarboxylate zwitterionic ligand. The water-stable IMOF undergoes reversible and single-crystal-to-single-crystal anion exchange and shows selective and discriminative ionochromic behaviors toward electron-rich anions owing to donor-acceptor interactions. The IMOFs with different anions are good ionic conductors with low activation energy, the highest conductivity being observed with chloride. Furthermore, integrating Lewis acidic sites and nucleophilic guest anions in solid state, the IMOFs act as heterogeneous and recyclable catalysts to efficiently catalyze the cycloaddition of CO2 to epoxides without needing the use of halide cocatalysts. The catalytic activity is strongly dependent upon the guest anions, and the iodide shows the highest activity. The results demonstrate the great potential of developing IMOFs with various functions related to the guest ions included in the porous matrices.

Abstract
A novel naphthalene diimide-based metal-organic framework (MOF) {[Zn(3-DPMNI)0.5(NDC)]·3DMF} (1@DMF), (H2NDC = 2,6-naphthalenedicarboxylic acid, DPMNI = N,N'-bis(3-pyridylmethyl)-1,4,5,8-naphthalene diimide, DMF = N,N'-dimethylformamide), has been synthesized, which shows a 3D pillar-layer architecture built of carboxylate layers and naphthalene diimide pillars. The compound exhibits outstanding photochromic performance due to photoinduced electron transfer (ET) between the electron-rich guest molecules and electron-deficient host framework (host-guest ET). Of note, the host framework of 1 cannot show a macroscopic color change owing to the absence of the ET pathway. Nevertheless, it exhibits discriminative photochromic behavior in the presence of electron-rich solvents, which is mainly attributed to different electron-donating abilities of guest solvents and distinct interfacial contacts of electron donors/acceptors. Furthermore, the MOF can also show discriminative ET chemochromic response to different sizes and shapes of organic amines, which can be potentially used for the visual detection of electron-rich organic amines, especially n-butylamine (n-BUA).

Abstract
As promising photoresponsive materials and potential smart materials, hybrid photochromic materials (HPMs), especially for crystalline HPMs (CHPMs), have been broadly explored for their potential in inheriting the merits of each constituents, and intriguing photomodulated functionality. Hitherto, the photoresponsive functionality in explored CHPMs mainly concentrate on dyad combination. By contrast, triple or quadruple photoresponsive properties are very rare because of the limited compatibility of multiple photoresponsive functionality in a single system. In this work, the electron-transfer (ET) and crystal engineering strategies were utilized to predesign CHPMs with multiple photoresponsive properties via the collaboration of paramagnetic metal ion (Dy3+ ), electron-donor (ED) ligand (benzene-1,2,3-tricarboxylic acid, H3 BTA) and electron-acceptor (EA) ligand (1,10-phenanthroline, phen). The resulting complex [Dy(BTA)(phen)2 ]⋅2H2 O (1) shows hybrid chain with the intrachain Dy3+ ions bridged and chelated by tricarboxylate and phen ligands, respectively. After photostimuli, the ET between tricarboxylate and phen results in photogenerated radicals and the resultant quadruple photoresponsive properties. Considering the abundant resources of paramagnetic metal ions, ED- and EA-ligands, this work provides a general method to construct CHPMs with multiple photoresponsive performances via the collaboration of each unit under the guidance of ET and crystal engineering strategies.

Abstract
Sensory materials that show color and/or fluorescence changes in response to specific gases or vapors have important applications in many fields. Here, we report the postsynthetic preparation of novel sensory metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) and their multiple responsive properties. Through postsynthetic N-amination, the 2,2'-bipyridyl spacers in a Zr(IV) MOF are partially transformed into N-aminobipyridinium. The new MOF (Zr-bpy-A) shows chromic behavior toward ammonia and amines because the electron-deficient pyridinium groups form charge-transfer complexes with amino moieties. It also shows a unique chromic response to formaldehyde owing to the Schiff-base condensation with the N-amino groups. Furthermore, the N-amino group can be used to graft different polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, which endow the MOF with strong fluorescence of variable colors and afford a high-contrast fluorescence response to ammonia/amines and formaldehyde associated with the chromic response. The presence of the unquaternized bipyridyl group also leads to a fluorescence response to HCl. The multiple responsive behaviors hold appeal for applications in sensing, switching, and antifake marking, which are illustrated with a test paper and writing ink.

Abstract
In this review, the dependence of the photophysical response of chromophores in the confined environments associated with crystalline scaffolds, such as metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), covalent-organic frameworks (COFs), and molecular cages, has been carefully evaluated. Tunability of the framework aperture, cavity microenvironment, and scaffold topology significantly affects emission profiles, quantum yields, or fluorescence lifetimes of confined chromophores. In addition to the role of the host and its effect on the guest, the methods for integration of a chromophore (e.g., as a framework backbone, capping linker, ligand side group, or guest) are discussed. The overall potential of chromophore-integrated frameworks for a wide-range of applications, including artificial biomimetic systems, white-light emitting diodes, photoresponsive devices, and fluorescent sensors with unparalleled spatial resolution are highlighted throughout the review.

Abstract
As a significant class of photochromic materials, crystalline hybrid photochromic materials (CHPMs) have attracted widespread attention of researchers because of their possibilities for generating other photoresponsive properties and advantages in understanding the underlying relationship between structure and photoresponsive performance. The predesign of suitable ligands plays a major role in generating desirable CHPMs. Hitherto, most CHPMs have been built from photodeformable or photoresponsive tectons. However, the synthesis of these ligands is usually time-consuming and expensive, and this greatly restricts their large-scale preparation and practical application. Therefore, it is necessary to explore new families of CHPMs besides the existing CHPMs. Herein, a simple and general method for constructing CHPMs by decorating metal nitrate with a coplanar bipyridine moiety, namely 1,10-phenanthroline (phen), is reported. The resulting products exhibit photocoloration in response to Xe-lamp irradiation. The electron transfer (ET) from the coplanar NO3 - species (as π-electron donors, π-EDs) to coplanar phen moieties (as π-electron acceptors, π-EAs) is responsible for the resulting photochromism. The influence of the coordination environment and central metal ion on the photochromism was also studied. This work demonstrates that the introduction of coplanar organic tectons as π-EAs to metal nitrates as π-EDs with the collaboration of ET and coordination-assembly strategies is a simple and general method to manufacture CHPMs.

Abstract
Smart materials that respond to chemical stimuli with color or luminescence changes are highly desirable for daily-life and high-tech applications. Here, we report a novel porous metal-organic framework (MOF) that shows multiple, selective, and discriminative responsive properties owing to the combination of different functional ingredients [tripyridinium chromogen, Eu(III) luminophore, cationic framework, and special porous structure]. The MOF contains two interpenetrated three-dimensional cationic coordination networks built of a tetrahedral [Eu4(μ3-OH)4] cluster and a tripyridinium-tricarboxylate zwitterionic linker. It shows reversible and discriminative chromic response to aliphatic amines and aniline through different host-guest interactions between electron-deficient pyridinium and electron-rich amines. The size- and shape-selective response to aliphatic amines is ascribed to the radical formation through host-guest electron transfer, whereas the response to aniline is ascribed to the formation of sandwich-type acceptor-donor-acceptor complexes. The MOF is capable of reversible anion exchange with various anions and shows selective and discriminative ionochromic response to iodide, bromide, and thiocyanate, which is attributed to charge-transfer complexation. The above chromic behaviors are accompanied by efficient quenching of Eu(III) photoluminescence. The MOF represents a multi-stimuli dual-output responsive system. It can be used for discrimination and identification of anions and amines. The potential use in invisible printing, reusable sensory films, and optical switches was demonstrated by the ink and the membrane made of the MOF and organic polymers.

Abstract
A two-dimensional Cd(ii) metal-organic framework (MOF) was constructed from a tris(pyridinium)-based hexacarboxylate zwitterionic ligand. The MOF shows a novel fashion of 2-fold 2D → 2D parallel entanglement. It is the entanglement that dictates close interlayer contacts between carboxylate (electron donor) and pyridinium (acceptor), which in turn impart the MOF with reversible photochromic properties through photoinduced electron transfer (PET). This is an extension of PET-based photochromism from bipyridinium to multipyridinium compounds. Thanks to the photoresponsive behaviour, the fluorescence of the MOF can be reversibly modulated or switched by photoirradiation. Besides, the fluorescence of the water-stable MOF in aqueous dispersion is very sensitive to nitrofuran antibiotics with high selectivity, and therefore the MOF is a good candidate of efficient and regenerable sensing material for determination of the antibiotics in water media.
