Reversible structural change of [Co2Fe2] complexes between diamagnetic hydrogen-bonded 1D chains and paramagnetic complexes within a layered structure of amphiphilic anions

The combination of amphiphilic ions and metal complexes may enable the construction of assemblies in which the assembly structure and electronic state of the metal complexes change concertedly. In this work, an alternating layered structure of [Co2Fe2] complexes and amphiphilic anions was constructed. In the crystal structure, [Co2Fe2] complexes and water molecules formed a hydrogen-bonded supramolecular one-dimensional (1D) chain in the hydrophilic layer. A reversible structural change between the 1D chain and discrete [Co2Fe2] complexes was found to occur concertedly with an electron transfer-coupled spin transition (ETCST) of the [Co2Fe2] complex and desorption/adsorption of water molecules.

Structural Conversion of Supramolecular Assembly in Solution by Thermally Induced Intramolecular Electron Transfer of [Co2 Fe2 ] Complex

Combining metal complexes with amphiphilic molecules leads to a wide variety of functional self-assembled nanostructures. Metal complexes exhibiting spin transitions can be good candidates as the trigger to cause structural conversion of such assembly because they respond to various external stimuli. In this work, we studied a structural conversion of a supramolecular assembly containing a [Co2 Fe2 ] complex through a thermally induced electron transfer-coupled spin transition (ETCST). With an amphiphilic anion, the [Co2 Fe2 ] complex formed reverse vesicles in solution and showed thermal ETCST. In contrast, thermal ETCST in the presence of a bridging hydrogen-bond donor caused structural conversion from the reverse vesicle structure to entangled one-dimensional chains through hydrogen bond formation.

Self-Assembled Manganese(I)-Based Selenolato-Bridged Tetranuclear Metallorectangles: Host-Guest Interaction, Anticancer, and CO-Releasing Studies

Supramolecular one-step self-assembly of dimanganese decacarbonyl, diaryl diselenide, and linear dipyridyl ligands (L = pyrazine (pz), 4,4'-bipyridine (bpy), and trans-1,2-bis(4-pyridyl)ethylene (bpe)) has resulted in the formation of selenolato-bridged manganese(I)-based metallorectangles. The synthesis of tetranuclear Mn(I)-based metallorectangles [{(CO)₃Mn(μ-SeR)₂Mn(CO)₃}₂(μ-L)₂] (1-6) was facilitated by the oxidative addition of diaryl diselenide to dimanganese decacarbonyl with the simultaneous coordination of linear bidentate pyridyl linker in an orthogonal fashion. Formation of metallorectangles 1-6 was ascertained using IR, UV-vis, NMR spectroscopic techniques, and elemental analyses. The molecular mass of compounds 2, 4, and 6 were determined by ESI-mass spectrometry. Solid-state structural elucidation of 2, 3, and 6 by single-crystal X-ray diffraction methods revealed a rectangular framework wherein selenolato-bridges and pyridyl ligands define the shorter and longer edges, respectively. Also, the guest binding capability of metallorectangles 3 and 5 with different aromatic guests was studied using UV-vis absorption and emission spectrophotometric titration methods that affirmed strong host-guest binding interactions. The formation of the host-guest complex between metallorectangle 3 and pyrene has been explicitly corroborated by the single-crystal X-ray structure of 3•pyrene. Moreover, select metallorectangles 1-4 and 6 were studied to explore their anticancer activity, while CO-releasing ability of metallorectangle 2 was further appraised using equine heart myoglobin assay.

Interplay of Jahn-Teller Ordering and Spin Crossover in Co(II) Compounds

The spin crossover phenomena in Co(II) compounds are in the focus of the present paper. A microscopic theoretical approach for the description of spin transitions in mononuclear Co(II) compounds is suggested. Within the framework of this approach there are taken into account two types of interionic interactions that may be operative in the problem such as the electron-deformational interaction and the cooperative Jahn-Teller interaction arising from the coupling of the low-spin state of the Co(II) ion with the tetragonal vibrations of the nearest surrounding. The different role of these interactions in the spin transformation is demonstrated and discussed. On the basis of developed approach a qualitative and quantitative explanation of the experimental data on the temperature dependence of the magnetic susceptibility for the [Co(pyterpy)2](PF6)2, [Co(pyterpy)2](TCNQ)2⋅DMF⋅MeOH and [Co(pyterpy)2](TCNQ)2⋅MeCN⋅MeOH compounds is given.
