Base-free oxidation of alcohols enabled by nickel(ii)-catalyzed transfer dehydrogenation

Nickel-Carbon Bond Oxygenation with Green Oxidants via High-Valent Nickel Species

Described herein is the synthesis of the Ni^II complex (^tBuMe₂tacn)Ni^II(cycloneophyl) (^tBuMe₂tacn = 1-tert-butyl-4,7-dimethyl-1,4,7-triazacyclononane, cycloneophyl = -CH₂CMe₂-o-C₆H₄-) and its reactivity with dioxygen and peroxides. The new ^tBuMe₂tacn ligand is designed to enhance the oxidatively induced bond-forming reactivity of high-valent Ni intermediates. Tunable chemoselectivity for Csp²-O vs Csp²-Csp³ bond formation was achieved by selecting the appropriate solvent and reaction conditions. Importantly, the use of cumene hydroperoxide and meta-chloroperbenzoic acid suggests a heterolytic O-O bond cleavage upon reaction with (^tBuMe₂tacn)Ni^II(cycloneophyl). Mechanistic studies using isotopically labeled H₂O₂ support the generation of a high-valent Ni-oxygen species via an inner-sphere mechanism and subsequent reductive elimination to form the Csp²-O bond. Kinetic studies of the exceptionally fast Csp²-O bond-forming reaction reveal a first-order dependence on both (^tBuMe₂tacn)Ni^II(cycloneophyl) and H₂O₂, and thus an overall second-order reaction. Eyring analysis further suggests that the oxidation of the Ni^II complex by H₂O₂ is the rate-determining step, which can be modulated by the presence of coordinating solvents. Moreover, computational studies fully support the conclusions drawn from experimental results. Overall, this study reveals for the first time the ability to control the oxidatively induced C-C vs C-O bond formation reactions at a Ni center. Importantly, the described system merges the known organometallic reactivity of Ni with the biomimetic oxidative transformations resembling oxygenases and peroxidases, and involving high-valent metal-oxygen intermediates, which is a novel approach that should lead to unprecedented oxidative catalytic transformations.

Ni-catalyzed mild hydrogenolysis and oxidations of C-O bonds via carbonate redox tags

Oxygenated molecules are omnipresent in natural as well as artificial settings making the redox transformation of the present C-O bonds a central tool for their processing. However, the required (super)stoichiometric redox agents which traditionally include highly reactive and hazardous reagents pose multiple practical challenges including process safety hazards or special waste management requirements. Here, we report a mild Ni-catalyzed fragmentation strategy based on carbonate redox tags for redox transformations of oxygenated hydrocarbons in the absence of any external redox equivalents or other additives. The purely catalytic process enables the hydrogenolysis of strong C(sp²)-O bonds including that of enol carbonates as well as the catalytic oxidation of C-O bonds under mild conditions down to room temperature. Additionally, we investigated the underlying mechanism and showcased the benefits of carbonate redox tags in multiple applications. More broadly, the work herein demonstrates the potential of redox tags for organic synthesis.

Determining the kinetic constants leading to mineralization of dilute carbamazepine and estradiol-containing solutions under continuous supercritical water oxidation conditions

Continuous subcritical and supercritical water oxidation experiments were conducted on dilute carbamazepine- and estradiol-containing synthetic solutions used to simulate the removal of model emerging pollutants from secondary municipal effluents. The operating conditions comprised 340-500 °C, retention time of 24-453 s and a stoichiometric oxidant ratio (O.C.) between 4 and 64. The transformation of the various species was determined at the outlet and by modeling a segmented non-isothermal reaction system. Four empirical power law kinetic models were established to represent both the pollutants' degradation and TOC removal efficiencies, using nonlinear multiple regression coupled with bootstrapping and K-fold cross-validation. The mineralization and degradation models for both pollutants yielded a R² of 67-80.5% vs. the experimental results. Discussion on the various model assumptions revealed that attributing full model deviations to the constant oxygen concentration or to the laminar reactor flow, yielded a deviation of 6% and 15% in the removal efficiencies, respectively. However, the expected deviation of the models was lower than 0.32% at conditions leading to (almost) full mineralization (45-60 s, 480-500 °C and O.C.s of 5-10). The methodologies developed in the study are useful for interpreting future results obtained from SCWO of actual secondary effluent solutions.
