Black phosphorus-modified sulfurized polyacrylonitrile with high C-rate and cycling performance in ether-based electrolyte for lithium sulfur batteries

Selenium-Doped Sulfurized Polyacrylonitrile Hybrid Cathodes with Ultrahigh Sulfur Content for High-Performance Solid-State Lithium Sulfur Batteries

The solid-state lithium sulfur battery (SSLSB) is an attractive next-generation energy storage system by reason of its remarkably high energy density and safety. However, the SSLSB still faces critical challenges, such as sluggish reaction kinetics, mismatched interface, and undesirable reversible capacity. Herein, a high-performance SSLSB is reported using sulfurized polyacrylonitrile with rich selenium-doped sulfur (Se/S-S@pPAN) as a cathode and poly(ethylene oxide)/Li7La3Zr1.4Ta0.6O12 (PEO-LLZTO) as an electrolyte. The sulfur content of the cathode up to 60.9 wt % can be achieved by dispersing selenium sulfide (SeSx) species in the sulfurized polyacrylonitrile (S@pPAN) skeleton at a molecular level. Selenium as a eutectic accelerator can be uniformly distributed in the composite through the Se-S bond and can accelerate the reaction kinetics. The PEO-LLZTO hybrid solid-state electrolyte (SSE) displays an attractive electrochemical performance and provides an intimate contact with electrodes. At 60 °C, Se/S-S@pPAN delivers an impressive discharge capacity of 1042 mAh g-1 at 0.1C and 445 mAh g-1 at 1C. Additionally, the LiFePO4 cathodes combined with PEO-LLZTO deliver a high reversible capacity (158.9 mAh g-1, 1C) and an ultralong lifespan (a capacity retention of 80%, 1000 cycles) at 1C. The synergetic design of the high-performance sulfur cathode and the organic/inorganic hybrid electrolyte is crucial for enabling the high-performance SSLSB.

Sulfurized polyacrylonitrile as cathodes for advanced lithium-sulfur batteries: advances in modification strategies

Sulfurized polyacrylonitrile (S@PAN) composites have gathered a lot of interest because of their advantages of high theoretical energy density, excellent cycling stability, and environmental friendliness. Meanwhile, their unique "covalent bonding" mechanism effectively avoids the dissolution and shuttling of polysulfides, and thus they are expected to be the most promising candidate for the cathode material in lithium-sulfur (Li-S) batteries. Over the past five years, S@PAN cathode materials have been widely studied in Li-S batteries, and it is very important to summarize the advances over time for their practical applications. This article reviews the latest progress concerning the modification of S@PAN cathode materials for improving poor electrical conductivity, low sulfur content, and sluggish reaction kinetics, and proposes possible research directions. We hope this review provides valuable insights and references for future research on Li-S batteries.

Wax-Transferred Hydrophobic CVD Graphene Enables Water-Resistant and Dendrite-Free Lithium Anode toward Long Cycle Li-Air Battery

One of the key challenges in achieving practical lithium-air battery is the poor moisture tolerance of the lithium metal anode. Herein, guided by theoretical modeling, an effective tactic for realizing water-resistant Li anode by implementing a wax-assisted transfer protocol is reported to passivate the Li surface with an inert high-quality chemical vapor deposition (CVD) graphene layer. This electrically conductive and mechanically robust graphene coating enables serving as an artificial solid/electrolyte interphase (SEI), guiding homogeneous Li plating/stripping, suppressing dendrite and "dead" Li formation, as well as passivating the Li surface from moisture erosion and side reactions. Consequently, lithium-air batteries fabricated with the passivated Li anodes demonstrate a superb cycling performance up to 2300 h (230 cycles at 1000 mAh g-1 , 200 mA g-1 ). More strikingly, the anode recycled thereafter can be recoupled with a fresh cathode to continuously run for 400 extended hours. Comprehensive time-lapse and ex situ microscopic and spectroscopic investigations are further carried out for elucidating the fundamentals behind the extraordinary air and electrochemical stability.

Multifunctional Metal Phosphides as Superior Host Materials for Advanced Lithium-Sulfur Batteries

For the past few years, a new generation of energy storage systems with large theoretical specific capacity has been urgently needed because of the rapid development of society. Lithium-sulfur (Li-S) batteries are regarded as one of the most promising candidates for novel battery systems, since their resurgence at the end of the 20th century Li-S batteries have attracted ever more attention, attributed to their notably high theoretical energy density of 2600 W h kg^-1 , which is almost five times larger than that of commercial lithium-ion batteries (LIBs). One of the determining factors in Li-S batteries is how to design/prepare the sulfur cathode. For the sulfur host, the major technical challenge is avoiding the shuttling effect that is caused by soluble polysulfides during the reaction. In past decades, though the sulfur cathode has developed greatly, there are still some enormous challenges to be conquered, such as low utilization of S, rapid decay of capacity, and poor cycle life. This article spotlights the recent progress and foremost findings in improving the performance of Li-S batteries by employing multifunctional metal phosphides as host materials. The current state of development of the sulfur electrode of Li-S batteries is summarized by emphasizing the relationship between the essential properties of metal phosphide-based hybrid nanomaterials, the chemical reaction with lithium polysulfides and the latter's influence on electrochemical performance. Finally, trends in the development and practical application of Li-S batteries are also pointed out.

A Scalable Cathode Chemical Prelithiation Strategy for Advanced Silicon-Based Lithium Ion Full Batteries

A silicon anode with ultra-high specific capacity has motivated tremendous exploration for high-energy-density lithium ion batteries while it still faces serious issues of irreversible lithium loss, unstable electrode electrolyte interface (SEI), and huge volume expansion. Prelithiation is a crucial technology to alleviate the harm of active lithium loss of silicon-based full-cell systems. Herein, we reported a cathode prelithiation method using Li₂S-PAN as a lithium "donor", which was synthesized via chemical reaction between sulfurized polyacrylonitrile and Li-biphenyl complex. The Li₂S-PAN with an initial charging capacity of 668 mAh g^-1 (2.5-4.0 V) is loaded on the LiFePO₄ electrode, and the LiFePO₄/Li₂S-PAN composite electrode displays a high initial charge capacity of 206 mAh g^-1, which is 22.3% higher than the pristine LiFePO₄. With a silicon/graphite/carbon (Si/G/C) composite anode, the Si/G/C||LiFePO₄/Li₂S-PAN full cell exhibits a reversible capacity of 123 and 107 mAh g^-1 in the 1st and 10th cycle, which is 15.5 and 24.5% higher than the Si/G/C||LiFePO₄ battery, respectively. The SEI layer of the silicon anode in the Si/G/C||LiFePO₄/Li₂S-PAN cell contains abundant conductive LiF species, which can enhance the interfacial stability and reaction kinetics of the cells. The proposed cathode prelithiation process is compatible with the industrial roll-to-roll electrode preparation process, exhibiting a promising application prospect.
