Access to Enantiomerically Pure P-Stereogenic Primary Aminophosphine Sulfides under Reductive Conditions

Stereochemically pure phosphines with phosphorus-heteroatom bonds and P-centered chirality are a promising class of functional building blocks for the design of chiral ligands and organocatalysts. A route to enantiomerically pure primary aminophosphine sulfides was opened through stereospecific reductive C-N bond cleavage of phosphorus(V) precursors by lithium in liquid ammonia. The chemoselectivity of the reaction as a function of reaction time, substrate pattern, and chiral auxiliary was investigated. In the presence of exclusively aliphatic groups bound to the phosphorus atom, all competing reductive side reactions are totally prevented. The absolute configurations of all P-stereogenic compounds were determined by single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis. Their use as synthetic building blocks was demonstrated. The lithium salt of (R)-BINOL-dithiophosphoric acid proved to be a useful stereochemical probe to determine the enantiomeric purity. Insights into the coordination mode of the lithium-based chiral complex formed in solution was provided by NMR spectroscopy and DFT calculations.

Hidden silylium-type reactivity of a siloxane-based phosphonium-hydroborate ion pair

A new class of siloxane-based cations with hidden silylium-type reactivity is provided, which, in combination with an arylborate counteranion, initiates a highly selective para-C(sp²)-F defunctionalization of a perfluorinated aryl group. The hydrodefluorinated aryl borane is obtained as a crystalline solid via continuous sublimation during the reaction. The heterocyclic six-membered cation could be obtained single-crystalline after dehydrogenative anion exchange. DFT calculations give insight into the bonding within the siloxane-based cation and the mechanism of the ion pair reaction.

Molecular Scissors for Tailor-Made Modification of Siloxane Scaffolds

The controlled design of functional oligosiloxanes is an important topic in current research. A consecutive Si−O−Si bond cleavage/formation using siloxanes that are substituted with 1,2‐diaminobenzene derivatives acting as molecular scissors is presented. The method allows to cut at certain positions of a siloxane scaffold forming a cyclic diaminosilane or ‐siloxane intermediate and then to introduce new functional siloxy units. The procedure could be extended to a direct one‐step cleavage of chlorooligosiloxanes. Both siloxane formation and cleavage proceed with good to excellent yields, high regioselectivity, and great variability of the siloxy units. Control of the selectivity is achieved by the choice of the amino substituent. Insight into the mechanism was provided by low temperature NMR studies and the isolation of a lithiated intermediate.

Synthesis and characterisation of two lithium-thiocyanate solvates with tetrahydrofuran: Li[SCN]·THF and Li[SCN]·2THF

Li[SCN]·THF and Li[SCN]·2THF can be obtained from solutions of anhydrous Li[SCN] in tetrahydrofuran (C₄H₈O, THF). Both compounds are very hygroscopic and slowly decompose even at room temperature. At ambient conditions Li[SCN]·THF crystallizes in the monoclinic space group P2₁/c with the lattice parameters a = 574.41(2), b = 1643.11(6), c = 830.15(3) pm and β = 99.009(1)° for Z = 4 as determined by laboratory X-ray powder diffraction. Its crystal structure contains Li⁺ cations surrounded by one THF molecule and three thiocyanate anions [SCN]^- forming {Li[NCS]₂[SCN](OC₄H₈)}^2- tetrahedra, which join together as pairs via shared N⋯N edges. CHNS combustion analysis and vibrational spectroscopy confirmed its composition, whereas differential scanning calorimetry and thermogravimetric analysis coupled with a mass spectrometer were applied to record its thermal behaviour. Li[SCN]·2THF crystallises in a primitive monoclinic lattice as well, but in the space group P2₁/n with the lattice parameters a = 1132.73(3), b = 1637.98(3), c = 1264.88(2) pm and β = 94.393(2)° for Z = 8 as determined from single-crystal X-ray diffraction data at 100 K. Its structure contains two crystallographically independent Li⁺-centred tetrahedra {Li[NCS]₂(OC₄H₈)₂}^-, which form dimers {(C₄H₈O)₂Li[μ₂-NCS]₂Li(OC₄H₈)₂} via shared N⋯N edges. They are merely stabilised by weak agostic H⋯S interactions between some CH₂-groups of the C₄H₈O molecules and the [NCS]^- ligands.

Electric field effect on 31P NMR magnetic shielding

Magnetic shielding depends on molecular structure and noncovalent interactions. This study shows that it is also measurably dependent on the electric field generated by surrounding molecules. This effect has been observed explicitly for ³¹P nucleus using the adduct under field approach. The results obtained indicate that the field strength experienced by molecules in crystals consisting of molecules with large dipole moments is similar to that in polar solvents. Therefore, magnetic shielding should explicitly depend on solvent polarity. It is important to note that this effect cannot be reproduced correctly within the polarizable continuum model approach.
