HOO• as the Chain Carrier for the Autocatalytic Photooxidation of Benzylic Alcohols

The oxidation of benzylic alcohols is an important transformation in modern organic synthesis. A plethora of photoredox protocols have been developed to achieve the aerobic oxidation of alcohols into carbonyls. Recently, several groups described that ultraviolet (UV) or purple light can initiate the aerobic oxidation of benzylic alcohols in the absence of an external catalyst, and depicted different mechanisms involving the photoinduction of •O2- as a critical reactive oxygen species (ROS). However, based on comprehensive mechanistic investigations, including control experiments, radical quenching experiments, EPR studies, UV-vis spectroscopy, kinetics studies, and density functional theory calculations (DFT), we elucidate here that HOO•, which is released via the H2O2 elimination of α-hydroxyl peroxyl radicals [ArCR(OH)OO•], serves as the real chain carrier for the autocatalytic photooxidation of benzylic alcohols. The mechanistic ambiguities depicted in the precedent literature are clarified, in terms of the crucial ROS and its evolution, the rate-limiting step, and the primary radical cascade. This work highlights the necessity of stricter mechanistic analyses on UV-driven oxidative reactions that involve aldehydes' (or ketones) generation.

Truxene-to-Fluorenone Energy Transfer in a Robust Mesoporous Zn-MOF

A new metal-organic framework (MOF; [Zn4O(hett)4/3(fluo)1/2(bdc)1/2]n; TFT-MOF) constructed on chromophoric ligands 5,5',10,10',15,15'-hexaethyltruxene-2,7,12-triacetate (hett), 9-fluorenone-2,7-dicarboxylate (fluo), terephthalate (bdc), and the Zn4O node has been prepared and identified by powder X-ray diffraction. This luminescent MOF exhibits large mesoporous pores of 2.7 nm based on computer modeling using density functional theory (DFT) calculations. The steady-state and time-resolved fluorescence spectra and photophysical parameters of TFT-MOF have been investigated and compared with those of the free ligands and their basic chromophores. All in all, TFT-MOF exhibits particularly efficient singlet-singlet energy-transfer processes described as 1(hett)* → (fluo) and 1(bdc)* → (fluo), leading to fluorescence arising for the fluo lumophore operating only through Förster resonance energy transfer (FRET) with an efficiency of transfer of up to >95%. This experimental conclusion was corroborated by DFT and time-dependent DFT (TDDFT). For the 1(hett)* → (fluo) process, the approximated overall rate constant of energy transfer was evaluated to be at most 2.04 × 1010 s-1 (using a Stern-Volmer approach of solution data and the relationship between distance and concentration). This process was analyzed using the Förster theory, where two intrapore energy transfer paths of center-to-center distances of 13 and 25 Å have been identified. TFT-MOF photosensitizes the formation of singlet oxygen (1O2 (1Σg)) as detected by its phosphorescence signal at 1275 nm.

Direct Deoxygenation of α-Hydroxy and α,β-Dihydroxy Ketones Using a Silyl Lithium Reagent

A reliable method for the one-step direct deoxygenation of α-hydroxy ketones has been developed using a silyl lithium reagent and acetic anhydride. The method is metal-catalyst-free and does not require prefunctionalization of the hydroxy group prior to its removal. Deoxygenation of different primary, secondary, and tertiary alcohols was carried out with up to 98% isolated yield. Additionally, double deoxygenation was achieved when the present method was applied to α,β-dihydroxy ketones to access the corresponding enones in a single step.

Selective Oxidation of Alcohols through Fe3 O4 @SiO2 /K2 CO3 -Glycerin Deep Eutectic Solvent as a Heterogeneous Catalytic System

K₂ CO₃ /Glycerin as a deep eutectic solvent (DES) was anchored covalently onto functionalized magnetic nanoparticles and showed a significant activity towards the oxidation of various alcohols under mild conditions with a short reaction time and good to high yield. A combination of the magnetic nanoparticles and deep eutectic solvent offers a novel, green, reusable catalyst with easy separation. Also, the catalyst structure was well characterized using techniques such as FT-IR spectroscopy, XRD, SEM, TGA, BET, VSM, TEM, and energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS).

BODIPY Photocatalyzed Beckmann Rearrangement and Hydrolysis of Oximes under Visible Light

A novel, efficient, and mild protocol for rearrangement of oximes to amides or hydrolyzing to ketone/aldehyde using a simple BODIPY dye as a photocatalyst and air as an oxidant via propagation reaction under visible-light irradiation is reported. The triplet excited state of BODIPY played a significant role in the catalytic process. It was found that the various substituted ketoximes, both with electron-withdrawing and electron-donating substituents, afforded the corresponding products with moderate to excellent yields, and the catalytic efficiency was up to 0.01 mol %.

Catalyst- and Oxidizing Reagent-Free Electrochemical Benzylic C(sp3)-H Oxidation of Phenol Derivatives

A site-selective electrochemical approach for the benzylic C(sp³)-H oxidation reaction of phenol derivatives along with hydrogen evolution has been developed. The protocol proceeds in an easily available undivided cell at room temperature under catalyst- and oxidizing reagent-free conditions. The corresponding aryl aldehydes and ketones are obtained in satisfactory yields, and the gram-scale synthesis is easy to be carried out.

Solvent Effect on Product Distribution in the Aerobic Autoxidation of 2-Ethylhexanal: Critical Role of Polarity

In the aerobic oxidation of aldehydes to acids, how the solvent affect the reaction remains unclear. Herein, the solvent effect in the oxidation of 2-ethylhexanal (2-ETH) to 2-ethylhexanoic acid (2-ETA) was systematically investigated. The vastly different product distributions were observed which could be ascribed to the dominant intermolecular forces. Though strong intermolecular forces in protic solvents limit the oxidation, the optimal 2-ETA yield (96%) was obtained in ipropanol via gradually evaporating the solvent to remove the interactions. Theoretical calculations further revealed that the hydrogen bonds between reactant and protic solvent increase the C-H bond energy (-CHO in 2-ETH). Meanwhile, the hydrogen bonds may improve 2-ETA selectivity by promoting H transfer in the oxidation rearrangement step. Our work discloses the critical role of polarity in determining the reactivity and selectivity of 2-ETH oxidation, and could guide the rational design of more desirable reaction processes with solvent effect.

Electrochemical Aerobic Oxidative Cleavage of (sp3)C-C(sp3)/H Bonds in Alkylarenes

An electrochemistry-promoted oxidative cleavage of (sp³)C-C(sp³)/H bonds in alkylarenes was developed. Various aryl alkanes can be smoothly converted into ketones/aldehydes under aerobic conditions using a user-friendly undivided cell setup. The features of air as oxidant, scalability, and mild conditions make them attractive in synthetic organic chemistry.

Visible Light-Induced Aerobic Oxidative Dehydrogenation of C-N/C-O to C=N/C=O Bonds Using Metal-Free Photocatalysts: Recent Developments

Performing synthetic transformation using visible light as energy source, in the presence of a photocatalyst as a promoter, is currently of high interest, and oxidation reactions carried out under these conditions using oxygen as the final oxidant are particularly convenient from an environmental point of view. This review summarizes the recent developments achieved in the oxidative dehydrogenation of C-N and C-O bonds, leading to C=N and C=O bonds, respectively, using air or pure oxygen as oxidant and metal-free homogeneous or recyclable heterogeneous photocatalysts under visible light irradiation.

Visible-Light-Mediated Oxidative Cyclization of 2-Aminobenzyl Alcohols and Secondary Alcohols Enabled by an Organic Photocatalyst

This paper describes a visible-light-mediated oxidative cyclization of 2-aminobenzyl alcohols and secondary alcohols to produce quinolines at room temperature. This photocatalytic method employed anthraquinone as an organic small-molecule catalyst and DMSO as an oxidant. According to this present procedure, a series of quinolines were prepared in satisfactory yields.

Cobalt-Catalyzed Aerobic Oxidative Cleavage of Alkyl Aldehydes: Synthesis of Ketones, Esters, Amides, and α-Ketoamides

A widely applicable approach was developed to synthesize ketones, esters, amides via the oxidative C-C bond cleavage of readily available alkyl aldehydes. Green and abundant molecular oxygen (O₂ ) was used as the oxidant, and base metals (cobalt and copper) were used as the catalysts. This strategy can be extended to the one-pot synthesis of ketones from primary alcohols and α-ketoamides from aldehydes.
