New insights into unusual droplets: from mediating the wettability to manipulating the locomotion modes

Surfactant-Free Emulsion of Epoxy Resin/Sodium Alginate for Achieving Robust Underwater Superoleophobic Coating via a Combination of Phase Separation and Biomineralization

Underwater superoleophobic coatings exhibit promising prospects in the field of oil contamination resistance. However, their poor durability, stemming from the fragile structures and unstable hydrophilicity, greatly restricted their development. In this report, we proposed a novel strategy of combination water-induced phase separation and biomineralization to prepare the robust underwater superoleophobic epoxy resin-calcium alginate (EP-CA) coating by utilizing a surfactant-free emulsion of epoxy resin/sodium alginate (EP/SA). The EP-CA coating not only exhibited excellent adhesion to various substrates, but also had remarkable resistance to the physical/chemical attacks such as abrasion, acid, alkali and salt. It could also protect the substrate (e.g., PET substrate) from the damage of organic solution and the fouling of crude oil. This report provides a new perspective to fabricate robust superhydrophilic coating with a facile way.

Adhesion behaviors of water droplets on bioinspired superhydrophobic surfaces

The adhesion behaviors of droplets on surfaces are attracting increasing attention due to their various applications. Many bioinspired superhydrophobic surfaces with different adhesion states have been constructed in order to mimic the functions of natural surfaces such as a lotus leaf, a rose petal, butterfly wings, etc. In this review, we first present a brief introduction to the fundamental theories of the adhesion behaviors of droplets on various surfaces, including low adhesion, high adhesion and anisotropic adhesion states. Then, different techniques to characterize droplet adhesion on these surfaces, including the rotating disk technique, the atomic force microscope cantilever technique, and capillary sensor-based techniques, are described. Wetting behaviors, and the switching between different adhesion states on bioinspired surfaces, are also summarized and discussed. Subsequently, the diverse applications of bioinspired surfaces, including water collection, liquid transport, drag reduction, and oil/water separation, are discussed. Finally, the challenges of using liquid adhesion behaviors on various surfaces, and future applications of these surfaces, are discussed.

Self-Motion of Water Droplets along a Spacing Gradient of Micropillar Arrays on Copper

Self-driven droplet transport along an open gradient surface is increasingly becoming popular for various microfluidics applications. In this work, a gradient copper oxide layer is formed on a copper sheet (as a bipolar electrode, BPE) in a KOH solution by bipolar electrochemistry. The deposits at different positions present a rich variety of colors, compositions, and microstructures along the longitudinal axis of the BPE. More than half the length of the anodic pole is covered by a Cu(OH)₂/CuO composite layer of several micrometers thick, which is composed of dense micropillars with a decreasing spacing gradient to the anodic direction. The micropillar arrays are superhydrophilic, and after modified with 1-dodecanethiol, the tops of the dense micropillars constitute a hydrophobic and microscopically discontinuous surface with a wettability gradient. On such a gradient surface water droplets can move spontaneously to more hydrophilic direction at a velocity of about 16 mm s^-1. The superhydrophobicity of the modified micropillar arrays is discussed through a comparison with the wax tubules on a lotus leaf. Theoretical analysis of the driving force reveals that the concave surface effect of water at the spacings between the micropillars is the critical factor for driving the rolling motion of the droplets along the gradient micropillar arrays.

Emerging Separation Applications of Surface Superwettability

Human beings are facing severe global environmental problems and sustainable development problems. Effective separation technology plays an essential role in solving these challenges. In the past decades, superwettability (e.g., superhydrophobicity and underwater superoleophobicity) has succeeded in achieving oil/water separation. The mixture of oil and water is just the tip of the iceberg of the mixtures that need to be separated, so the wettability-based separation strategy should be extended to treat other kinds of liquid/liquid or liquid/gas mixtures. This review aims at generalizing the approach of the well-developed oil/water separation to separate various multiphase mixtures based on the surface superwettability. Superhydrophobic and even superoleophobic surface microstructures have liquid-repellent properties, making different liquids keep away from them. Inspired by the process of oil/water separation, liquid polymers can be separated from water by using underwater superpolymphobic materials. Meanwhile, the underwater superaerophobic and superaerophilic porous materials are successfully used to collect or remove gas bubbles in a liquid, thus achieving liquid/gas separation. We believe that the diversified wettability-based separation methods can be potentially applied in industrial manufacture, energy use, environmental protection, agricultural production, and so on.

Tannic acid-based functional coating: surface engineering of membranes for oil-in-water emulsion separation

Enhanced Fog Harvesting through Capillary-Assisted Rapid Transport of Droplet Confined in the Given Microchannel

A novel integrated bioinspired surface is fabricated by using an innovative capillarity-induced selective oxidation method, to achieve the combination of the fog-collecting characteristics of a variety of creatures, i.e., the micronanostructures of spider silk, the wettable patterns of desert beetle, the conical structure of cactus spine, and the hierarchical microchannel of Sarracenia trichome. The fog is captured effectively via multistructures on the cone tips, and captured droplet is collected and confined in the microchannel to realize rapid transport via the formation of wettable pattern on the surface and the introduction of wettable gradient in the microchannel. Consequently, the fog harvest efficiency reaches 2.48 g/h, increasing to nearly 320% compared to the normal surface. More interestingly, similar to Sarracenia trichome, the surface also presents two transport modes, namely, Mode I (water transport along dry microchannel) and Mode II (succeeding water slippage on the water film). In Mode II, the velocity of 34.10 mm/s is about three times faster than that on the Sarracenia trichome. Such a design of integrated bioinspired surface may present potential applications in high-efficiency water collection systems, microfluidic devices, and others.

Water/gas separation based on the selective bubble-passage effect of underwater superaerophobic and superaerophilic meshes processed by a femtosecond laser

To solve the problems caused by tiny bubbles in liquids and the difficulties involved in collecting useful gas underwater, this paper proposes a method to separate bubbles from water by integrating underwater superaerophobic and superaerophilic porous membranes, including bubble removal and collection methods. Inspired by fish scales and lotus leaves, underwater superaerophobic microstructures and underwater superaerophilic microstructures are prepared on a stainless steel (SS) mesh by femtosecond laser processing, respectively. The as-prepared underwater superaerophobic mesh has an anti-bubble ability, while the underwater superaerophilic mesh has a bubble-absorption ability in water. Based on the different dynamic behavior of bubbles on these two kinds of superwetting meshes, efficient water/bubble separation is achieved by using laser-induced superwetting meshes. Tiny bubbles can be completely removed from the water flow in a pipe or easily collected. Such water/gas separation methods based on underwater superaerophobic and superaerophilic porous membranes provide an effective way to prevent the damage caused by bubbles and to collect the available gas in liquids, which has great potential applications in energy utilization, environmental protection, medical and health care, microfluidic chips, chemical manufacturing, agricultural breeding, and so on.

Smart Bionic Surfaces with Switchable Wettability and Applications

In order to satisfy the needs of different applications and more complex intelligent devices, smart control of surface wettability will be necessary and desirable, which gradually become a hot spot and focus in the field of interface wetting. Herein, we review interfacial wetting states related to switchable wettability on superwettable materials, including several classical wetting models and liquid adhesive behaviors based on the surface of natural creatures with special wettability. This review mainly focuses on the recent developments of the smart surfaces with switchable wettability and the corresponding regulatory mechanisms under external stimuli, which is mainly governed by the transformation of surface chemical composition and geometrical structures. Among that, various external stimuli such as physical stimulation (temperature, light, electric, magnetic, mechanical stress), chemical stimulation (pH, ion, solvent) and dual or multi-triggered stimulation have been sought out to realize the regulation of surface wettability. Moreover, we also summarize the applications of smart surfaces in different fields, such as oil/water separation, programmable transportation, anti-biofouling, detection and delivery, smart soft robotic etc. Furthermore, current limitations and future perspective in the development of smart wetting surfaces are also given. This review aims to offer deep insights into the recent developments and responsive mechanisms in smart biomimetic surfaces with switchable wettability under external various stimuli, so as to provide a guidance for the design of smart surfaces and expand the scope of both fundamental research and practical applications.
