Construction of a C@MoS2@C sandwiched heterostructure for accelerating the pH-universal hydrogen evolution reaction

A Schiff base complex of lanthanum on modified MCM-41 as a reusable nanocatalyst in the homoselective synthesis of 5-substituted 1H-tetrazoles

In this work, mesoporous MCM-41 was modified by a new Schiff-base formed from the condensation of triethylenetatramine and 5-bromosalicylaldehyde. Then, it was used for the stabilization of lanthanum metal (La-Schiff base@MCM-41) as a homoselective, reusable, efficient and biocompatible catalyst in the synthesis of 5-substituted 1H-tetrazole derivatives. The synthesized tetrazoles were characterized using ¹H NMR and FT-IR spectroscopy and methods to measure their physical properties. La-Schiff base@MCM-41 was characterized by using various techniques such as ICP, CHN, XRD, TGA, BET, FT-IR spectroscopy, SEM, EDS and WDX. This catalyst has good stability and a heterogeneous nature, enabling it to be easily recovered and reused several times without significant loss in catalytic activity. This present strategy has important advantages such as utilizing PEG as a green solvent, short reaction times, excellent yields, easy recycling of the catalyst and pure separation of the products. The recovered La-Schiff base@MCM-41 catalyst was characterized by using FT-IR spectroscopy, SEM and AAS.

Strategies to improve electrocatalytic performance of MoS2-based catalysts for hydrogen evolution reactions

Electrocatalytic hydrogen evolution reactions (HERs) are a key process for hydrogen production for clean energy applications. HERs have unique advantages in terms of energy efficiency and product separation compared to other methods. Molybdenum disulfide (MoS₂) has attracted extensive attention as a potential HER catalyst because of its high electrocatalytic activity. However, the HER performance of MoS₂ needs to be improved to make it competitive with conventional Pt-based catalysts. Herein, we summarize three typical strategies for promoting the HER performance, i.e., defect engineering, heterostructure formation, and heteroatom doping. We also summarize the computational density functional theory (DFT) methods used to obtain insight that can guide the construction of MoS₂-based materials. Additionally, the challenges and prospects of MoS₂-based catalysts for the HER have also been discussed.

Multi-interface MoS2/Ni3S4/Mo2S3 composite as an efficient electrocatalyst for hydrogen evolution reaction over a wide pH range

The exploitation of cost-efficiently electrocatalysts for hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) over a wide pH range remains a challenge. Herein, we prepared a novel multi-interface MoS₂/Ni₃S₄/Mo₂S₃ composite on carbon cloth (CC) that acts as an efficient electrocatalyst over a wide pH range through a facile one-pot strategy, where (NH₄)₄[NiH₆Mo₆O₂₄]·5H₂O (abbreviated to NiMo₆) as a bimetallic precursor and Ni(NO₃)₂·6H₂O as one of the raw materials and salt are used together with thiourea (TU) for converting them into the MoS₂/Ni₃S₄/Mo₂S₃ load on CC (abbreviated as MoS₂/Ni₃S₄/Mo₂S₃/CC). MoS₂/Ni₃S₄/Mo₂S₃/CC-24 h shows a distinguished electrocatalytic performance towards HER with long-term stability in acid and alkaline media. It presents low overpotentials of 38 mV and 51 mV in 0.5 M H₂SO₄ and 1.0 M KOH at 10 mA cm^-2, respectively. This work can deliver a new idea to fabricate cost-efficient and long-term durability HER electrocatalysts over a broad pH range.

Molecular evidence for sulfurization of molybdenum dithiocarbamates (MoDTC) by zinc dithiophosphates: a key process in their synergetic interactions and the enhanced preservation of MoDTC in formulated lubricants?

Molybdenum dithiocarbamates (MoDTC) are widely used in automotive industries as lubricant additives to reduce friction and to enhance fuel economy. Sulfur-containing additives such as zinc dithiophosphates (ZnDTP) are proposed to play a key role in the improvement of friction reducing properties of MoDTC in formulated lubricants by facilitating the formation of MoS₂ tribofilm at the rubbing contacts. This study focuses on the interactions between MoDTC and ZnDTP under conditions comparable with those prevailing in operating engines. The capacity of ZnDTP to sulfurize MoDTC in solution in a hydrocarbon base oil could be demonstrated. Sulfurized Mo complexes bearing one or two additional sulfur atoms (1S-MoDTC and 2S-MoDTC, respectively) which have replaced the genuine oxygen atom(s) from the MoDTC core were detected and quantified using a specifically developed HPLC-MS analytical method. A possible sulfurization mechanism relying on the higher affinity of phosphorus from ZnDTP for oxygen could be proposed. In parallel, the evolution and molecular transformation of the prepared 2S-MoDTC in hydrocarbon base oil under thermal and thermo-oxidative conditions were followed using HPLC-MS and compared with the evolution of their friction coefficients. 2S-MoDTC complexes were shown to exhibit a better retention of friction reducing capability under oxidative conditions than the “classical” MoDTC, although they did not seem to significantly reduce the friction coefficients of lubricants as compared to the “classical” MoDTC. Therefore, sulfurization of MoDTC by ZnDTP might contribute to delaying the progressive consumption of MoDTC and the loss of their friction-reducing efficiency in lubricants under thermo-oxidative conditions.

MOF-on-MOF Strategy to Construct a Nitrogen-Doped Carbon-Incorporated CoP@Fe-CoP Core-Shelled Heterostructure for High-Performance Overall Water Splitting

The design and preparation of efficient and low-cost catalysts for water electrolysis are crucial and highly desirable to produce eco-friendly and sustainable hydrogen fuel. Herein, we prepared nitrogen-doped carbon-incorporated CoP@Fe-CoP core-shelled nanorod arrays grown on Ni foam (CoP@Fe-CoP/NC/NF) through phosphorization of ZIF-67@Co-Fe Prussian blue analogue (ZIF-67@CoFe-PBA). The hierarchical nanorod arrays combined with the core-shelled structure offer favorable mass/electron transport capacity and maximize the active sites, thus enhancing the electrochemically active surface area. The synergistic effect of the bimetallic components and the nitrogen-doped carbon matrix endow the composite with an optimized electronic structure. Benefiting from the above superiorities of morphological and chemical compositions, this self-supported CoP@Fe-CoP/NC/NF heterostructure can drive alkaline hydrogen evolution reaction and oxygen evolution reaction with overpotentials of 97 and 270 mV to yield 100 mA cm^-2, respectively. The two-electrode alkaline electrolyzer constructed by this heterostructure shows a low cell voltage of 1.58 V to yield 10 mA cm^-2, superior to the precious-metal-based electrocatalyst apparatus (IrO₂∥Pt/C). This study offers a feasible and facile approach to develop efficient electrocatalysts for water electrolysis, which applies to other electrochemical energy conversion and storage applications.

Solution combustion synthesis of ternary Ni/WC/C composites with efficient electrocatalytic oxygen reduction performance

In this paper, a fast processing route involving a wet-chemical method (solution combustion synthesis, SCS) and carbonization in a CH₄ environment was demonstrated, through which nanosized Ni/WC/C powder with an average size of 80 nm was obtained. In the catalyst powder, Ni was evenly distributed and it could form NiOOH to promote catalysis, and an amorphous carbon (C) layer with a thickness of <10 nm was formed on the surface of the composite particles, improving the stability of the Ni/WC powder and promoting electron transport. Due to the characteristics of uniformity and a large specific surface area and the synergistic effect of Ni, WC, and C, this powder showed significantly improved ORR catalytic activity in alkaline solution. When the amount of Ni doping was 15 wt%, the composite powder showed the smallest particle size and the best ORR catalytic performance. Its cathode peak potential was -0.31 V and the half wave potential was -0.34 V. The number of electrons transferred in the ORR reaction was 3.6. This work provided a fast and cheap method for the preparation of multicomponent composite catalyst materials.

Metal-Organic Frameworks-Derived Self-Supported Carbon-Based Composites for Electrocatalytic Water Splitting

Electrocatalytic water splitting has been considered as a promising strategy for the sustainable evolution of hydrogen energy and storage of intermittent electric energy. Efficient catalysts for electrocatalytic water splitting are urgently demanded to decrease the overpotentials and promote the sluggish reaction kinetics. Carbon-based composites, including heteroatom-doped carbon materials, metals/alloys@carbon composites, metal compounds@carbon composites, and atomically dispersed metal sites@carbon composites have been widely used as the catalysts due to their fascinating properties. However, these electrocatalysts are almost powdery form, and should be cast on the current collector by using the polymeric binder, which would result in the unsatisfied electrocatalytic performance. In comparison, a self-supported electrode architecture is highly attractive. Recently, self-supported metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) constructed by coordination of metal centers and organic ligands have been considered as suitable templates/precursors to construct free-standing carbon-based composites grown on conductive substrate. MOFs-derived carbon-based composites have various merits, such as the well-aligned array architecture and evenly distributed active sites, and easy functionalization with other species, which make them suitable alternatives to non-noble metal-included electrocatalysts. In this review, we intend to show the research progresses by employment of MOFs as precursors to prepare self-supported carbon-based composites. Focusing on these MOFs-derived carbon-based nanomaterials, the latest advances in their controllable synthesis, composition regulation, electrocatalytic performances in hydrogen evolution reaction (HER), oxygen evolution reaction (OER), and overall water splitting (OWS) are presented. Finally, the challenges and perspectives are showed for the further developments of MOFs-derived self-supported carbon-based nanomaterials in electrocatalytic reactions.

MoS2/polyaniline/functionalized carbon cloth electrode materials for excellent supercapacitor performance

In this study, molybdenum disulfide (MoS₂), polyaniline (PANI) and their composite (MoS₂/PANI) were facilely prepared via a liquid-phase method and in situ polymerization. An MoS₂/PANI/functionalized carbon cloth (MoS₂/PANI/FCC) was facilely constructed by a drop-casting method. MoS₂/PANI-10/FCC displays remarkable electrochemical performances, and its specific capacitances varied from 452.25 to 355.5 F g⁻¹ at current densities ranging from 0.2 to 4 A g⁻¹, which were higher than those of MoS₂/CC (from 56.525 to 7.5 F g⁻¹) and pure PANI/CC (319.5 to 248.5 F g⁻¹), respectively. More importantly, the MoS₂-10/PANI/FCC electrode has a long cycling life, and a capacity retention of 87% was obtained after 1000 cycles at a large current density of 10 A g⁻¹. Moreover, the MoS₂/PANI-10/FCC-based symmetric supercapacitor also exhibits excellent rate performance and good cycling stability. The specific capacitance based on the total mass of the two electrodes is 72.8 F g⁻¹ at a current density of 0.2 A g⁻¹ and the capacitance retention of 85% is obtained after 1000 cycles.

A MoS₂/PANI/functionalized carbon cloth (MoS₂/PANI/FCC) was constructed by a drop-casting method. Its specific capacitances were higher than those of MoS₂/CC and pure PANI/CC.

Effect on thermal stability of microstructure and morphology of thermally-modified electrospun fibers of polybenzoxazines (PBz) blended with sulfur copolymers (SDIB)

Simple modification by thermal treatment is the commonly used approach to enhance the performance of electrospun fibers. This was investigated in the thermal treatment of polybenzoxazine (PBz) fibers blended with sulfur copolymers (SDIB) to determine the effect of varying treatment conditions on the microstructure and morphology of PBz fibers with the effect of incorporating sulfur functional groups on resulting properties. Mechanical properties of PBz are greatly improved by thermally-induced ring-opening polymerization (ROP) of the oxazine ring. Blending with sulfur copolymers (SDIB) could have beneficial effects on endowed features on fibers but could also affect the resulting properties of SDIB-blended PBz fibers during crosslinking reactions. Fiber mats were fabricated by electrospinning of PBz (10 wt%) blended with SDIB (10 wt%). Physical modification with varying conditions of sequential thermal treatment were evaluated and compared to the conditions applied on pristine PBz fibers. Changes in morphology and microstructure of fibers after modification were analyzed through scanning electron microscopy (SEM) while elemental compositions were identified after varying the conditions of thermal treatment. Adjustment of treatment conditions using two-step temperature sequential thermal treatment with higher temperatures of 160 °C and 240 °C showed significant changes in microstructure and morphology of fibers. Lower temperatures of 120 °C and 160 °C exhibited microstructure and morphology of fibers which affected the fiber diameter and fiber networks. Cross-sectional SEM images also confirmed the adversed effect of high-temperature treatment conditions on fibrous structures while low-temperature treatment retained the fibrous structures with more compact and stiff fiber networks. SDIB-blended PBz fibers were also evaluated by TGA and DSC to correlate the changes in structure and morphology with the thermal stability and integrity of blended SDIB/PBz fibers as compared to pristine PBz with the effect of change in treatment conditions. Fiber strength indicated slower weight loss for blended fibers and higher onset temperature of degradation which resulted in more thermally stable fibers.

Synthesis of polyurethane-derived nitrogen-doped carbon dots for a high-performance fluorescence bioimaging probe

A universal and robust strategy using polyurethane sponge as a precursor was developed to synthesize highly-soluble nitrogen-doped carbon quantum dots via a solvothermal method.
