Electron transfer within β-diketiminato nickel bromide and cobaltocene redox couples activating CO2

Tridentate NacNac Tames T-Shaped Nickel(I) Radical

The reaction of a nickel(II) chloride complex containing a tridentate β-diketiminato ligand with a picolyl group [2,6-iPr2 -C6 H3 NC(Me)CHC(Me)NH(CH2 py)]Ni(II)Cl (1)] with KSi(SiMe3 )3 conveniently afforded a nickel(I) radical with a T-shaped geometry (2). The compound's metalloradical nature was confirmed through electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) studies and its reaction with TEMPO, resulting in the formation of a highly unusual three-membered nickeloxaziridine complex (3). When reacted with disulfide and diselenide, the S-S and Se-Se bonds were cleaved, and a coupled product was formed through carbon atom of the pyridine-imine group. The nickel(I) radical activates dihydrogen at room temperature and atmospheric pressure to give the monomeric nickel hydride.

Controlling the Activation at NiII -CO2 2- Moieties through Lewis Acid Interactions in the Second Coordination Sphere

Nickel complexes with a two-electron reduced CO2 ligand (CO2 2- , "carbonite") are investigated with regard to the influence alkali metal (AM) ions have as Lewis acids on the activation of the CO2 entity. For this purpose complexes with NiII (CO2 )AM (AM=Li, Na, K) moieties were accessed via deprotonation of nickel-formate compounds with (AM)N(i Pr)2 . It was found that not only the nature of the AM ions in vicinity to CO2 affect the activation, but also the number and the ligation of a given AM. To this end the effects of added (AM)N(R)2 , THF, open and closed polyethers as well as cryptands were systematically studied. In 14 cases the products were characterized by X-ray diffraction and correlations with the situation in solution were made. The more the AM ions get detached from the carbonite ligand, the lower is the degree of aggregation. At the same time the extent of CO2 activation is decreased as indicated by the structural and spectroscopic analysis and reactivity studies. Accompanying DFT studies showed that the coordinating AM Lewis acidic fragment withdraws only a small amount of charge from the carbonite moiety, but it also affects the internal charge equilibration between the LtBu Ni and carbonite moieties.

Transformation of Formazanate at Nickel(II) Centers to Give a Singly Reduced Nickel Complex with Azoiminate Radical Ligands and Its Reactivity toward Dioxygen

The heteroleptic (formazanato)nickel bromide complex LNi(μ-Br)₂NiL [LH = Mes-NH-N═C(p-tol)-N═N-Mes] has been prepared by deprotonation of LH with NaH followed by reaction with NiBr₂(dme). Treatment of this complex with KC₈ led to transformation of the formazanate into azoiminate ligands via N-N bond cleavage and the simultaneous release of aniline. At the same time, the potentially resulting intermediate complex L'₂Ni [L' = HN═C(p-tol)-N═N-Mes] was reduced by one additional electron, which is delocalized across the π system and the metal center. The resulting reduced complex [L'₂Ni]K(18-c-6) has a S = ¹/₂ ground state and a square-planar structure. It reacts with dioxygen via one-electron oxidation to give the complex L'₂Ni, and the formation of superoxide was detected spectroscopically. If oxidizable substrates are present during this process, these are oxygenated/oxidized. Triphenylphosphine is converted to phosphine oxide, and hydrogen atoms are abstracted from TEMPO-H and phenols. In the case of cyclohexene, autoxidations are triggered, leading to the typical radical-chain-derived products of cyclohexene.

Chemical Reduction of NiII Cyclam and Characterization of Isolated NiI Cyclam with Cryogenic Vibrational Spectroscopy and Inert-Gas-Mediated High-Resolution Mass Spectrometry

Ni^II cyclam (cyclam = 1,4,8,11-tetraazacyclotetradecane) is an efficient catalyst for the selective reduction of CO₂ to CO. A crucial elementary step in the proposed catalytic cycle is the coordination of CO₂ to a Ni^I cyclam intermediate. Isolation and spectroscopic characterization of this labile Ni^I species without solvent has proven to be challenging, however, and only partial IR spectra have previously been reported using multiple photon fragmentation of ions generated by gas-phase electron transfer to the Ni^II cyclam dication at 300 K. Here, we report a chemical reduction method that efficiently prepares Ni^I cyclam in solution. This enables the Ni^I complex to be transferred into a cryogenic photofragmentation mass spectrometer using inert-gas-mediated electrospray ionization. The vibrational spectra of the 30 K ion using both H₂ and N₂ messenger tagging over the range 800-4000 cm^-1 were then measured. The resulting spectra were analyzed with the aid of electronic structure calculations, which show strong method dependence in predicted band positions and small molecule activation. The conformational changes of the cyclam ligand induced by binding of the open shell Ni^I cation were compared with those caused by the spherical, closed-shell Li^I cation, which has a similar ionic radius. We also report the vibrational spectrum of a Ni^I cyclam complex with a strongly bound O₂ ligand. The cyclam ligand supporting this species exhibits a large conformational change compared to the complexes with weakly bound N₂ and H₂, which is likely due to significant charge transfer from Ni to the coordinated O₂.
