Recent Development on Sensing Strategies for Small Molecules Detections

Sensors play a critical role in the detection and monitoring of various substances present in our environment, providing us with valuable information about the world around us. Within the field of sensor development, one area that holds particular importance is the detection of small molecules. Small molecules encompass a wide range of organic or inorganic compounds with low molecular weight, typically below 900 Daltons including gases, volatile organic compounds, solvents, pesticides, drugs, biomarkers, toxins, and pollutants. The accurate and efficient detection of these small molecules has attracted significant interest from the scientific community due to its relevance in diverse fields such as environmental pollutants monitoring, medical diagnostics, industrial optimization, healthcare remedies, food safety, ecosystems, and aquatic and terrestrial life preservation. To meet the demand for precise and efficient monitoring of small molecules, this summary aims to provide an overview of recent advancements in sensing and quantification strategies for various organic small molecules including Hydrazine, Glucose, Morpholine, Ethanol amine, Nitrosamine, Oxygen, Nitro-aromatics, Phospholipids, Carbohydrates, Antibiotics, Pesticides, Drugs, Adenosine Triphosphate, Aromatic Amine, Glutathione, Hydrogen Peroxide, Acetone, Methyl Parathion, and Thiophenol. The focus is on understanding the receptor sensing mechanism, along with the electrical, optical, and electrochemical response. Additionally, the variations in UV-visible spectral properties of the ligands upon treatment with the receptor, fluorescence and absorption titration analysis for limit of detection (LOD) determination, and bioimaging analysis are discussed wherever applicable. It is anticipated that the information gathered from this literature survey will be helpful for the perusal of innovation regarding sensing strategies.

Selective Supramolecular Recognition of Nitroaromatics by a Fluorescent Metal-Organic Cage Based on a Pyridine-Decorated Dibenzodiaza-Crown Macrocyclic Co(II) Complex

Two isomorphous fluorescent (FL) lantern-shaped metal-organic cages 1 and 2 were prepared by coordination-directed self-assembly of Co(II) centers with a new aza-crown macrocyclic ligand bearing pyridine pendant arms (L_py). The cage structures were determined using single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis, thermogravimetric, elemental microanalysis, FT-IR spectroscopy, and powder X-ray diffraction. The crystal structures of 1 and 2 show that anions (Cl^- in 1 and Br^- in 2) are encapsulated within the cage cavity. 1 and 2 bear two coordinated water molecules that are directed inside the cages, surrounded by the eight pyridine rings at the "bottom" and the "roof" of the cage. These hydrogen bond donors, π systems, and the cationic nature of the cages enable 1 and 2 to encapsulate the anions. FL experiments revealed that 1 could detect nitroaromatic compounds by exhibiting selective and sensitive fluorescence quenching toward p-nitroaniline (PNA), recommending a limit of detection of 4.24 ppm. Moreover, the addition of 50 μL of PNA and o-nitrophenol to the ethanolic suspension of 1 led to a significant large FL red shift, namely, 87 and 24 nm, respectively, which were significantly higher than the corresponding values observed in the presence of other nitroaromatic compounds. The titration of the ethanolic suspension of 1, with various concentrations of PNA (>12 μM) demonstrated a concentration-dependent emission red shift. Hence, the efficient FL quenching of 1 was capable of distinguishing the dinitrobenzene isomers. Meanwhile, the observed red shift (10 nm) and quenching of this emission band under the influence of a trace amount of o- and p-nitrophenol isomers also showed that 1 could discriminate between o- and p-nitrophenol. Replacement of the chlorido with a bromido ligand in 1 generated cage 2 which was a more electron-donating cage than 1. The FL experiments showed that 2 was partially more sensitive and less selective toward NACs than 1.

Luminescent Cd coordination polymer based on thiazole as a dual-responsive chemosensor for 4-nitroaniline and CrO42- in water

A novel highly fluorescent cadmium metal-organic framework, [Cd (DPTTZ) (OBA)] (IUST-3), synthesized by using two linkers 2, 5-di (pyridine-4-yl) thiazolo [5, 4-d] thiazole (DPTTZ) and 4, 4'-oxybis (benzoic acid) (OBA) simultaneously, which exhibits a two-dimensional framework. The characteristics of this Cd-MOF were investigated by single-crystal X-ray diffraction, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, elemental analysis, powder X-ray diffraction, and thermogravimetry analysis. The IUST-3 exhibits excellent luminescence property and good stability in water. Luminescent experiments indicate that the IUST-3 has remarkable sensitivity and selectivity for the detection of 4-nitroaniline (4-NA), and CrO₄^2- anion with K_SV = 1.03 × 10⁵ M^-1 (4-NA) and K_SV = 2.93 × 10⁴ M^-1 (CrO₄^2-) and low limit of detection 0.52 µM (4-NA) and 1.37 µM (CrO₄^2-). In addition, the possible fluorescence quenching mechanism was explored in this paper.

Effective adsorption and catalytic reduction of nitrophenols by amino-rich Cu(I)-I coordination polymer

Nitrophenols are identified as the priority organic pollutants due to the chemical stability, water solubility, persistence, and toxicity to human health and the environment. Hence, removal of nitrophenols from waste water is vitally essential. In this study, amino-rich coordination polymer Cu₂I₂(MA)₂ (MA = melamine) has been applied for efficient adsorption and catalytic reduction of nitrophenols, like 4-nitrophenol (4-NP), 2, 4-dinitrophenol (DNP) and 2, 4, 6-trinitrophenol (TNP). The effect of various parameters like contact time, initial concentrations, pH, and temperature on adsorption were investigated. The adsorption of nitrophenols fitted the pseudo-second-order kinetic model and Langmuir isotherms model well. The maximum adsorption capacities were 285.71, 232.02, and 131.57 mg g^-1 for 4-NP, DNP, and TNP when initial concentrations were 50 mg L^-1 at 293.15 K, respectively. The adsorption of nitrophenols is a spontaneous, endothermic, and entropy-driven process. The reduction reaction followed the pseudo-first-order kinetics, and the kinetic rate constants were 0.4413, 0.3167, and 0.17538 min^-1 for 4-NP, DNP, and TNP, respectively. The effect of initial nitrophenols concentration, anions, and temperature on reduction process was investigated. The mechanism of adsorption and catalytic reduction of Cu₂I₂(MA)₂ was studied. The results demonstrated that Cu₂I₂(MA)₂ exhibits excellent adsorption and catalytic activity to remove nitrophenols.

A One-Dimensional Cu(I) Coordination Polymer with Optical Sensing of Oxygen and Temperature

Due to their tight structures, it is usually difficult for one-dimensional (1D) coordination polymers (CPs) to form permanent pores unless 2D and 3D topologies are formed via supramolecular interactions, so studies in the field of oxygen sensing on 1D CPs are rarely reported. Here, we report a 1D Cu(I) cluster-based CP with dual sensing characteristics for temperature and oxygen. Even if the porosity is only 6.6%, the quenching rate of this CP reaches 98.4% with 1 bar O2 at room temperature. Its luminescence intensity exhibits a unique thermal “quenching, then activating” behavior during monotonic variations in temperature.

Ultrasonic assisted preparation of ultrafine Pd supported on NiFe-layered double hydroxides for p-nitrophenol degradation

NiFe-layered double hydroxide (NiFe-LDH)-loaded ultrafine Pd nanocatalysts (Pd/NiFe-LDHs) were prepared by a facile ultrasonic-assisted in situ reduction technology without any stabilizing agents or reducing agents. Pd/NiFe-LDHs were characterized by FT-IR, XRD, XPS, and TEM. PdNPs are uniformly dispersed on NiFe-LDHs with a particle size distribution of 0.77-2.06 nm and an average particle size of 1.43 nm. Hydroxyl groups in Fe-OH and Ni-OH were dissociated into hydrogen radicals (·H) excited by ultrasound, and ·H reduced Pd²⁺ to ultrafine PdNPs. Then, Pd was coordinated with O in Ni-O and Fe-O, which improved the stability of the catalysts. Pd/NiFe-LDHs completely degraded 4-NP in 5 min, and the TOF value was 597.66 h^-1, which was 16.7 times that of commercial Pd/C. The 4-NP conversion rate remained at 98.75% over Pd/NiFe-LDHs after 10 consecutive catalytic cycles. In addition, the catalyst also has high catalytic activity for the reduction of Congo red, methylene blue, and methyl orange by NaBH₄.

Crystal engineering with copper and melamine

Coordination complexes and polymers are central in inorganic and materials chemistry as a variety of metal centers and coordination geometries lead to a diverse range of interesting properties. Here, size and structure control of gem-like quality monocrystals is demonstrated at room temperature. Using the same set of precursors, the copper-to-melamine molar ratio is adjusted to synthesize either a novel coordination complex of dinuclear copper and melamine (Cu2M1), or a barely-studied coordination polymer of zigzag copper-chlorine chains (Cu4M1). Crystals of the former are dark green and square with a size up to 350 μm across. The latter is light green, octagonal, and as large as 5 mm across. The magnetic properties of both crystals reflect the low-dimensional arrangements of copper. The magnetic susceptibility of Cu2M1 is modelled with a spin-1/2 dimer, and that of Cu4M1 with a spin-1/2 one-dimensional Ising chain. Controlled synthesis of such quality magnetic crystals is a prerequisite for various magnetic and magneto-optical applications.

A New Compound for Sequential Sensing of Picric Acid and Aliphatic Amines: Physicochemical Details and Construction of Molecular Logic Gates

Picric acid (PA) at low concentration is a serious water pollutant. Alongside, aliphatic amines (AAs) add to the queue to pollute surface water. Plenty of reports are available to sense PA with an ultralow limit of detection (LOD). However, only a handful of works are testified to detect AAs. A new fluorescent donor-acceptor compound has been synthesized with inherent intramolecular charge transfer (ICT) character that enables selective and sensitive colorimetric quantitative detection of PA and AAs with low LODs in non-aqueous as well as aqueous solutions. The synthesized compound is based on a hemicyanine skeleton containing two pyridenylmethylamino groups at the donor and a benzothiazole moiety at the acceptor ends. The detailed mechanisms and reaction dynamics are explained spectroscopically along with computational support. The fluorescence property of the detecting compound changes due to protonation of its pyridinyl centers by PA leading to quenching of fluorescence and subsequently de-protonation by AAs to revive the signal. We have further designed logic circuits from the acquired optical responses by sequential interactions.

Efficient removal of Pb2+ and Cd2+ using a Cu(i)–Br coordination polymer constructed with an amino-rich ligand

Coordination polymers with amino-rich ligands can rapidly and efficiently remove Pb²⁺ and Cd²⁺. The adsorption capacity were found to be 598.8 mg g⁻¹ and 2175 mg g⁻¹, respectively.
