Photophysics and photochemistry of (n-Bu4N)2[Pt(NO3)6] in acetonitrile: ultrafast pump-probe spectroscopy and quantum chemical insight

The ultrafast processes caused by photoexcitation of (n-Bu4N)2[Pt(NO3)6] complex in acetonitrile were studied by means of transient absorption (TA) pump-probe spectroscopy and verified by quantum chemical calculations. The primary photochemical process was found to be an inner-sphere electron transfer followed by an escape of an •NO3 radical to the bulk solution. The reaction occurs via the dissociative triplet excited LMCT state of the initial complex. Based on the experimental data and quantum chemical calculations, the mechanism of ultrafast photophysical and photochemical processes is proposed.

A new era of LMCT: leveraging ligand-to-metal charge transfer excited states for photochemical reactions

Ligand-to-metal charge transfer (LMCT) excited states are capable of undergoing a wide array of photochemical reactions, yet receive minimal attention compared to other charge transfer excited states. This work provides general criteria for designing transition metal complexes that exhibit low energy LMCT excited states and routes to drive photochemistry from these excited states. General design principles regarding metal identity, oxidation state, geometry, and ligand sets are summarized. Fundamental photoreactions from these states including visible light-induced homolysis, excited state electron transfer, and other photoinduced chemical transformations are discussed and key design principles for enabling these photochemical reactions are further highlighted. Guided by these fundamentals, this review outlines critical considerations for the future design and application of coordination complexes with LMCT excited states.

Photochemistry of (n-Bu4N)2[Pt(NO3)6] in acetonitrile

Photochemistry of the (n-Bu4N)2[Pt(NO3)6] complex in acetonitrile was studied by means of stationary photolysis and nanosecond laser flash photolysis. The primary photochemical process was found to be an intramolecular electron transfer followed by an escape of an •NO3 radical to the solution bulk. The spectra of two successive Pt(III) intermediates were detected in the microsecond time domain, and their spectral and kinetic characteristics were determined. These intermediates were identified as PtIII(NO3)52- and PtIII(NO3)4- complexes. Disproportionation of Pt(III) species resulted in formation of final Pt(II) products.

Improving Near-Infrared Emission of meso-Aryldipyrrin Indium(III) Complexes via Annulation Bridging: Excited-State Dynamics

Using non-adiabatic dynamics and Redfield theory, we predicted the optical spectra, radiative and nonradiative decay rates, and photoluminescence quantum yields (PLQYs) for In(III) dipyrrin-based complexes (i) with electron-withdrawing (EW) or electron-donating (ED) substituents on the meso-phenyl group and (ii) upon fusing the pyrrin and phenyl rings via saturated or unsaturated bridging to increase structural rigidity. The ED groups lead to a primary π,π* character with a minor intraligand charge transfer (ILCT) contribution to the emissive state, while EW groups increase the ILCT contribution and red-shift the luminescence to ∼1.5 eV. Saturated annulation enhances the PLQYs for complexes with primary π,π* character compared to those of the non-annulated and unsaturated-annulated complexes, while both unsaturated and saturated annulation decrease the PLQYs for complexes with primary ILCT character. We found that PLQY improvement goes beyond a simple concept of structural rigidity. In contrast, the charge transfer character of excitonic states is a key parameter for engineering the NIR emission of In(III) dipyrrin complexes.

Ultrafast Solution-Phase Photophysical and Photochemical Dynamics of Hexaiodobismuthate(III), the Heart of Bismuth Halide Perovskite Solar Cells

The ultrafast relaxation pathways in a hexaiodide bismuth(III) complex, BiI₆^3-, excited at 530 nm in acetonitrile solution are studied by means of femtosecond transient absorption spectroscopy supported by steady-state absorption/emission measurements and DFT computations. Radiationless relaxation out of the Franck-Condon, largely metal-centered (MC) triply degenerate ³T_1u state (46 ± 19 fs), is driven by vibronic coupling due to the Jahn-Teller effect in the excited state. The relaxation populates two lower-energy states: a ligand-to-metal charge transfer (LMCT) excited state of ³π I(5p_π) → Bi(6p) nature and a luminescent "trap" ³A_1u(³P₀) MC state. Coherent population transfer from the initial ³T_1u into the ³π LMCT state occurs in an oscillatory, stepwise manner at ∼190 and ∼550 fs with a population ratio of ∼4:1. The ³π LMCT state decays with a 2.9 ps lifetime, yielding two short-lived reaction intermediates of which the first one reforms the parent ground state with a 15 ps time constant, and the second one decays on a ∼5 ps timescale generating the triplet product species, which persists to the longest 2 ns delay times investigated. This product is identified as the η² metal-ligated diiodide-bismuth adduct with the intramolecularly formed I-I bond, [(η²-I₂)Bi(II)I₄]^3-, which is the species of interest for solar energy conversion and storage applications. The lifetime of the "trap" ³A_1u state is estimated to be 13 ns from the photoluminescence quenching of BiI₆^3-. The findings give insight into the excited-state relaxation dynamics and the photochemical reaction mechanisms in halide complexes of heavy ns² metal ions.

Photochemistry of hexachloroosmate(IV) in ethanol

The photochemistry of the OsIVCl62- complex in ethanol was studied by means of stationary photolysis, nanosecond laser flash photolysis, ultrafast pump-probe spectroscopy and quantum chemistry. The direction of the photochemical process was found to be wavelength-dependent. Irradiation in the region of the d-d and LMCT bands results in the photosolvation (with the wavelength-dependent quantum yield) and photoreduction of Os(iv) to Os(iii), correspondingly. The characteristic time of photosolvation is ca. 40 ps. Photoreduction occurs in the micro- and millisecond time domains via several Os(iii) intermediates. The nature of intermediates and the possible mechanisms of photoreduction are discussed. We believe that the lability of the photochemically produced Os(iv) and Os(iii) intermediates determines the synthetic potential of OsIVCl62- photochemistry.
