A quantum chemical study of substituent effects on CN bonds in aryl isocyanide molecules adsorbed on the Pt surface

Phosphorescent fac-Bis(triarylisocyanide) W(0) and Mo(0) Complexes

Homoleptic W(0) and Mo(0) complexes containing bis(triarylisocyanide) ligands with bulky substituents were synthesized and spectroscopically characterized. Crystallographically determined structures revealed that these complexes are hourglass-like in shape with the tridentate ligands adopting a facial coordination mode to the metal center. These complexes luminesce in fluid solutions and in the solid state. Typically in toluene at 298 K, the two W(0) complexes display the emission maximum (lifetime and quantum yield) at 591 nm (0.83 μs and 0.35) and 628 nm (1.04 μs and 0.39), and similarly, the two Mo(0) complexes display it at 575 nm (0.54 μs and 0.15) and 617 nm (0.56 μs and 0.23). DFT and TDDFT calculations indicated that the low-energy absorption bands of the W(0) and Mo(0) complexes could be metal-to-ligand charge transfer (MLCT) transitions in nature. These complexes exhibited a reversible M+/0 redox couple at -0.70 and -0.63 V vs Fc+/0 for the W(0) complexes and -0.86 and -0.67 V for the Mo(0) complexes. The excited-state reduction potentials were hence estimated to be -2.91 and -2.74 V vs Fc+/0 for the W(0) complexes and -3.10 and -2.81 V vs Fc+/0 for the Mo(0) complexes, indicating that they are potentially strong photoreductants.

Correlating the orbital overlap area and vibrational frequency shift of an isocyanide moiety adsorbed on Pt and Pd covered Au(111) surfaces

Orbital interactions between adsorbed molecules and the underlying metal surfaces play critical roles in a wide range of surface and interfacial processes. Establishing a correlation between an experimental observable (e.g., vibrational frequency shift of the adsorbed molecule) and the orbital interactions is of vital importance. Herein, theoretical calculations are used to investigate the vibrational frequency shift of phenyl isocyanide molecules as a probe molecule adsorbed on mono- and bi-layer Pt and Pd covered Au(111) surfaces and Pd₂Au₄ and Pt₂Au₄ clusters. By analyzing the density of states (DOS) of the adsorption system, we show that the orbital overlap area of d electronic DOS with a molecular σ or π* orbital, particularly their ratio (R_d-σ/d-π*), can be a meaningful descriptor to explain the frequency shift of the CN moiety. This hypothesis has been verified by simulations for phenyl isocyanide with electron donating NH₂- and withdrawing CF₃- substituent groups, formonitrile and carbon monoxide. Quasi-linear dependence of the frequency shift on R_d-σ/d-π* is observed for both the red and blue shift regions. Our findings build up on previous notions of electronic interactions, which will provide a more quantitative and solid footing to understand and analyze the frequency shift of adsorbed molecules on metal surfaces and the related electronic interactions and catalytic properties.

Medicinal Chemistry of Isocyanides

In eons of evolution, isocyanides carved out a niche in the ecological systems probably thanks to their metal coordinating properties. In 1859 the first isocyanide was synthesized by humans and in 1950 the first natural isocyanide was discovered. Now, at the beginning of XXI century, hundreds of isocyanides have been isolated both in prokaryotes and eukaryotes and thousands have been synthesized in the laboratory. For some of them their ecological role is known, and their potent biological activity as antibacterial, antifungal, antimalarial, antifouling, and antitumoral compounds has been described. Notwithstanding, the isocyanides have not gained a good reputation among medicinal chemists who have erroneously considered them either too reactive or metabolically unstable, and this has restricted their main use to technical applications as ligands in coordination chemistry. The aim of this review is therefore to show the richness in biological activity of the isocyanide-containing molecules, to support the idea of using the isocyanide functional group as an unconventional pharmacophore especially useful as a metal coordinating warhead. The unhidden hope is to convince the skeptical medicinal chemists of the isocyanide potential in many areas of drug discovery and considering them in the design of future drugs.
