From 'halogen' to 'tetrel' bonds: matrix isolation IR spectroscopic and quantum mechanical studies of the effect of central atom substitution in donor tetrahalogens on binary complex formation with formic acid

Binary complex formation between silicon tetrachloride (SiCl4) and formic acid (FA) has been observed in an argon matrix environment. Such complex formation manifests as spectral shifts in signature vibrations of the latter, namely the νCO, νC-O and νO-H vibrations. Quantum chemical calculations reveal that the most stable conformers of the complex involve predominantly the tetrel bond, which has been defined in existing literature as a variant of the "σ-hole" interactions. Here, regions of positive electrostatic potential on the tetrahedral face of SiCl4 act as electrophilic centers (σ-hole) to which the nucleophilic carbonyl group of FA is able to bind. Atoms-in-molecules analysis predicts a bond critical point along the non-covalent contact between the tetrel atom Si and the carbonyl oxygen on FA, corroborating the presence of the tetrel bond. The hyperconjugative interaction parameters at the binding interface obtained from Natural Bond Orbital (NBO) analysis are also consistent with such observations. Although apparently similar to SiCl4, there are noticeable differences in the binding preferences of the lower homologue carbon tetrachloride (CCl4). The binary complexes of the latter with the same FA acceptor molecule have been previously shown to involve halogen bonded, rather than tetrel bonded interactions (Banerjee and Bhattacharya, Spectrochim. Acta Mol. and Biomol. Spectrosc., 2021, 250, 119355). Such variations in the nature of non-covalent interactions of these tetrahalogens are attributed to differences in the distribution of electronic charge density surrounding the central tetrel atom, as obtained from mappings of their electrostatic potential surfaces. Our combined experimental and theoretical findings therefore provide direct evidence of the growing propensity of tetrel atoms to engage in tetrel bonding as we move lower down Group 14, and re-assert the reluctance of the smaller and more electronegative carbon atom to serve as a tetrel bond participant.

Elucidating the non-covalent interactions in thiazole-carbon dioxide complexes through rotational spectroscopy and theoretical computations

The complexes formed between thiazole and carbon dioxide were studied to probe the non-covalent bonding properties between carbon dioxide and a heteroaromatic ring. The rotational spectra of the thiazole-CO2 complex were analyzed using a supersonic jet Fourier transform microwave spectrometer in conjunction with theoretical calculations. A rotational spectrum corresponding to the global minimum of the thiazole-CO2 complex was identified. The observed structure of the complex is stabilized by a C⋯N tetrel-bond, with additional stability provided by a C-H⋯O hydrogen bond. The computational analysis of the thiazole-(CO2)2 and thiazole-(CO2)3 complexes demonstrated the notable impact of C⋯N interactions on aggregation, with the significance of interactions between CO2 molecules increasing with the number of CO2 molecules present. NCI analysis, NBO analysis, and SAPT analysis were utilized to elucidate the properties of non-covalent interactions between thiazole and CO2, as well as those among CO2 molecules.

C···S Tetrel Bond Favored in the Phenyl Isothiocyanate-CO2 Complex: A Rotational Study

The rotational spectrum of the phenyl isothiocyanate-CO2 complex was investigated by pulsed-jet Fourier transform microwave spectroscopy complemented by quantum chemical calculations. Only one isomer, with CO2 almost in the plane of phenyl isothiocyanate, has been detected in the pulsed jet, of which the spectrum displays a quadrupole coupling hyperfine structure due to the presence of a 14N nucleus (I = 1). This structure is nearly equal to the lowest energy geometry obtained by B3LYP-D3(BJ)/6-311++G(d,p), which has been dominated by a C···S tetrel bond (n → π* interaction) and one secondary C-H···O hydrogen bond (n → σ* interaction). Molecular electrostatic potential and natural bond orbital analysis were used to characterize the noncovalent interactions of the complex. The results from this study would lay the groundwork for the design and advancement of materials that exhibit high efficiency in capturing CO2.

Conformations and non-covalent interactions of cyclohexyl isothiocyanate and its water complex

The conformational equilibria of cyclohexyl isothiocyanate and its complex with water were studied by microwave spectroscopy combined with theoretical calculations. For the bare cyclohexyl isothiocyanate, the rotational spectra of the two conformers, namely a-trans and e-trans, were measured and analyzed. Additional mono-substituted isotopologues of two ¹³C and one ³⁴S of a-trans and e-trans were also measured, which result in an accurate structural determination of the two conformers. For the binary complex with water, the rotational spectra were measured for the monohydrates of both a-trans and e-trans conformers. Water isotopologues were also detected for the monohydrates. All the measured rotational spectra show ¹⁴N quadrupole coupling hyperfine structures. Water molecule prefers linking to the isothiocyanate group through a O_wH⋯S hydrogen bond and forming two CH⋯O_w hydrogen bonds with the oxygen atom of water acting as a proton acceptor. The non-covalent bonding features of the monohydrates were revealed by natural bond orbital analysis and symmetry-adapted perturbation theory analysis.

CO2 Aggregation on Monoethanolamine: Observations from Rotational Spectroscopy

The initial stages of the gas-phase nucleation between CO₂ and monoethanolamine were investigated via broadband rotational spectroscopy with the aid of extensive theoretical structure sampling. Sub-nanometer-scale aggregation patterns of monoethanolamine-(CO₂ )_n , n=1-4, were identified. An interesting competition between the monoethanolamine intramolecular hydrogen bond and the intermolecular interactions between monoethanolamine and CO₂ upon cluster growth was discovered, revealing an intriguing CO₂ binding priority to the hydroxyl group over the amine group. These findings are in sharp contrast to the general results for aqueous solutions. In the quinary complex, a cap-like CO₂ tetramer was observed cooperatively surrounding the monoethanolamine. As the cluster approaches the critical size of new particle formation, the contribution of CO₂ self-assembly to the overall stability increases.

Interaction Types in C6H5(CH2)nOH-CO2 (n = 0-4) Determined by the Length of the Side Alkyl Chain

C₆H₅(CH₂)_nOH-CO₂ complexes have been investigated using rotational spectroscopy (n = 0-2) complemented by quantum chemical calculations (n = 0-4), which implies that the side alkyl chain length can determine the types of intermolecular interactions. Unlike the in-plane C···O tetrel bond in phenol-CO₂, the π*_CO2···π_aromatic interaction has been shown to link CO₂ to phenylmethanol and 2-phenylethanol, which is, to the best of our knowledge, the first time it has been demonstrated by rotational spectroscopy. Further elongations of the side alkyl chain gradually increase the energies of intramolecular hydrogen bonds in 3-phenylpropanol and 4-phenylbutanol so that CO₂ cannot break it. CO₂ will be pushed farther from the monomers and link with the -OH group through a dominating C···O tetrel bond. Our observations would allow, with the choice of the proper length of the side alkyl chain, new strategies for engineering C···π_aromatic-centered noncovalent bonding schemes for the capture, utilization, and storage of CO₂.

Maximal occupation by bases of π-hole bands surrounding linear molecules

Linear molecules such as CO₂ contain a positive π-hole ring that surrounds C on the molecule's equator. Quantum calculations examine the question as to how many bases can simultaneously bind to this ring. Linear molecules examined are TO₂ , where T = C, Si, Ge, Sn; bases are NCH and NH₃ . CO₂ engages in the weakest of the tetrel bonds, and can bind up to three NCH and two NH₃ . Unlike σ-hole tetrel bonds, Si forms the strongest tetrel bonds, with interaction energies as high as 43 kcal/mol with NH₃ . But like GeO₂ , SiO₂ can sustain only two bases in its equatorial ring. The π-hole ring of SnO₂ can engage in up to four tetrel bonds with either NCH or NH₃ , even though these bonds are weaker than those with GeO₂ or SiO₂ . As all of these complexes cast TO₂ in the role of multiple electron acceptor, the resulting negative cooperativity makes each successive bond weaker than its predecessor as bases are added, as well as reducing the magnitude of the central molecule's π-hole.

A Combined Experimental/Quantum-Chemical Study of Tetrel, Pnictogen, and Chalcogen Bonds of Linear Triatomic Molecules

Linear triatomic molecules (CO₂, N₂O, and OCS) are scrutinized for their propensity to form perpendicular tetrel (CO₂ and OCS) or pnictogen (N₂O) bonds with Lewis bases (dimethyl ether and trimethyl amine) as compared with their tendency to form end-on chalcogen bonds. Comparison of the IR spectra of the complexes with the corresponding monomers in cryogenic solutions in liquid argon enables to determine the stoichiometry and the nature of the complexes. In the present cases, perpendicular tetrel and pnictogen 1:1 complexes are identified mainly on the basis of the lifting of the degenerate ν 2 bending mode with the appearance of both a blue and a red shift. Van ′t Hoff plots of equilibrium constants as a function of temperature lead to complexation enthalpies that, when converted to complexation energies, form the first series of experimental complexation energies on sp¹ tetrel bonds in the literature, directly comparable to quantum-chemically obtained values. Their order of magnitude corresponds with what can be expected on the basis of experimental work on halogen and chalcogen bonds and previous computational work on tetrel bonds. Both the order of magnitude and sequence are in fair agreement with both CCSD(T) and DFA calculations, certainly when taking into account the small differences in complexation energies of the different complexes (often not more than a few kJ mol⁻¹) and the experimental error. It should, however, be noted that the OCS chalcogen complexes are not identified experimentally, most probably owing to entropic effects. For a given Lewis base, the stability sequence of the complexes is first successfully interpreted via a classical electrostatic quadrupole–dipole moment model, highlighting the importance of the magnitude and sign of the quadrupole moment of the Lewis acid. This approach is validated by a subsequent analysis of the molecular electrostatic potential, scrutinizing the σ and π holes, as well as the evolution in preference for chalcogen versus tetrel bonds when passing to “higher” chalcogens in agreement with the evolution of the quadrupole moment. The energy decomposition analysis gives further support to the importance/dominance of electrostatic effects, as it turns out to be the largest attractive term in all cases considered, followed by the orbital interaction and the dispersion term. The natural orbitals for chemical valence highlight the sequence of charge transfer in the orbital interaction term, which is dominated by an electron-donating effect of the N or O lone-pair(s) of the base to the central atom of the triatomics, with its value being lower than in the case of comparable halogen bonding situations. The effect is appreciably larger for TMA, in line with its much higher basicity than DME, explaining the comparable complexation energies for DME and TMA despite the much larger dipole moment for DME.

Anatomy of π-hole bonds: Linear systems

The list of σ-hole bonds is long and growing, encompassing both H-bonds and its closely related halogen, chalcogen, etc., sisters. These bonds rely on the asymmetric distribution of electron density, whose depletion along the extension of a covalent bond leaves a positive region of electrostatic potential from which these bonds derive their name. However, the density distributions of other molecules contain analogous positive regions that lie out of the molecular plane known as π-holes, which are likewise capable of engaging in noncovalent bonds. Quantum calculations are applied to study such π-hole bonds that involve linear molecules, whose positive region is a circular belt surrounding the molecule, rather than the more restricted area of a σ-hole. These bonds are examined in terms of their most fundamental elements arising from the spatial dispositions of their relevant molecular orbitals and the π-holes in both the total electron density and the electrostatic potential to which they lead. Systems examined comprise tetrel, chalcogen, aerogen, and triel bonds, as well as those involving group II elements, with atoms drawn from various rows of the Periodic Table. The π-hole bonds established by linear molecules tend to be weaker than those of comparable planar systems.

Characterizing hydrogen and tetrel bonds in clusters of CO2 with carboxylic acids

The interaction between carbon dioxide and planar carboxylic acids has been investigated through the analysis of the microwave spectrum of the acrylic acid·CO2 complex and quantum chemical modeling of the R-COOH·(CO2)1,16 clusters, where R = H, CH2CH. As regards the 1 : 1 compounds, two species, involving the s-cis and s-trans conformers of acrylic acid were observed. For both of them, a similar bidentate interaction arises between the carbonyl group of CO2 and the carboxylic group of the organic acid, leading to the formation of a planar six-membered ring. The binding energy is estimated to be De ≃ 21 kJ mol-1, 1/3 being the energy contributions of the tetrel to hydrogen bonds, respectively. In the 1 : 16 clusters, the ring arrangement is broken, allowing for the interaction of the acid with several CO2 molecules. The CO2 molecules completely surround formic acid, whereas, in the case of acrylic acid, they tend to avoid the allyl chain.

Dissection of the Origin of π-Holes and the Noncovalent Bonds in Which They Engage

Accompanying the rapidly growing list of σ-hole bonds has come the acknowledgment of parallel sorts of noncovalent bonds which owe their stability in large part to a deficiency of electron density in the area above the molecular plane, known as a π-hole. The origins of these π-holes are probed for a wide series of molecules, comprising halogen, chalcogen, pnicogen, tetrel, aerogen, and spodium bonds. Much like in the case of their σ-hole counterparts, formation of the internal covalent π-bond in the Lewis acid molecule pulls density toward the bond midpoint and away from its extremities. This depletion of density above the central atom is amplified by an electron-withdrawing substituent. At the same time, the amplitude of the π*-orbital is enhanced in the region of the density-depleted π-hole, facilitating a better overlap with the nucleophile's lone pair orbital and a stabilizing n → π* charge transfer. The presence of lone pairs on the central atom acts to attenuate the π-hole and shift its position somewhat, resulting in an overall weakening of the π-hole bond. There is a tendency for π-hole bonds to include a higher fraction of induction energy than σ-bonds with proportionately smaller electrostatic and dispersion components, but this distinction is less a product of the σ- or π-character and more a function of the overall bond strength.

Competition between Inter and Intramolecular Tetrel Bonds: Theoretical Studies Complemented by CSD Survey

Crystal structures document the ability of a TF₃ group (T=Si, Ge, Sn, Pb) situated on a naphthalene system to engage in an intramolecular tetrel bond (TB) with an amino group on the adjoining ring. Ab initio calculations evaluate the strength of this bond and evaluate whether it can influence the ability of the T atom to engage in a second, intermolecular TB with another nucleophile. A very strong CN^- anionic base can approach the T either along the extension of a T-C or T-F bond and form a strong TB with an interaction energy approaching 100 kcal/mol, although this bond is weakened a bit by the presence of the internal T⋅⋅⋅N bond. The much less potent NCH base engages in a correspondingly longer and weaker TB, less than 10 kcal/mol. Such an intermolecular TB is weakened by the presence of the internal TB, to the point that it only occurs for the two heavier tetrel atoms Sn and Pb.

Hydrogen versus tetrel bonds in complexes of 3-oxetanone with water and formaldehyde

The ability and preference of 3-oxetanone to form hydrogen or tetrel bonds have been investigated in its complexes with water and formaldehyde by using Fourier transform microwave spectroscopy complemented with quantum chemical calculations. Different types of interactions and internal dynamics have been observed in the targeted complexes. With water, the ether oxygen of 3-oxetanone is the favoured interaction site forming a classical O-HO hydrogen bond. Quite differently, the carbonyl group of 3-oxetanone plays the dual role as a tetrel donor and a proton acceptor in the 3-oxetanone-formaldehyde complex, featuring the CO tetrel bond and C-HO weak hydrogen bond interactions. Splittings originated from the internal rotation of formaldehyde around its C₂ axis were also observed. The V₂ barrier was estimated to be 375(10) cm^-1 based on Meyer's one-dimensional flexible model. The changes in geometries and electronic densities upon complexation would shed light on the impact of archetype solvent and organic substrate molecules on the reactivity of 3-oxetanone.

Conformational Equilibria of 2-Methoxypyridine⋅⋅⋅CO2 : Cooperative and Competitive Tetrel and Weak Hydrogen Bonds

The rotational spectrum of 2-methoxypyridine⋅⋅⋅CO₂ was recorded and analysed employing a cavity-based Fourier transform microwave spectrometer, complemented with quantum chemical calculations which predicted three possible isomers within energies less than 1000 cm^-1 . The two most stable isomers were observed in the pulsed jet, which are stabilized by a network of C⋅⋅⋅N/O tetrel and C-H⋅⋅⋅O weak hydrogen bonds. The relative population ratio of the two detected isomers was estimated to be N_I /N_II ≈2.5. The competition and cooperation of the present non-covalent interactions in both isomers are discussed within the framework of Bader's quantum theory of atoms in molecules and Johnson's non-covalent interaction analyses. The study shows, that when looking for CO₂ adsorbents, one might prefer candidates with multiple interactions in one site over candidates with few but strong interactions.

Origins and properties of the tetrel bond

The tetrel bond (TB) recruits an element drawn from the C, Si, Ge, Sn, Pb family as electron acceptor in an interaction with a partner Lewis base. The underlying principles that explain this attractive interaction are described in terms of occupied and vacant orbitals, total electron density, and electrostatic potential. These principles facilitate a delineation of the factors that feed into a strong TB. The geometric deformation that occurs within the tetrel-bearing Lewis acid monomer is a particularly important issue, with both primary and secondary effects. As a first-row atom of low polarizability, C is a reluctant participant in TBs, but its preponderance in organic and biochemistry make it extremely important that its potential in this regard be thoroughly understood. The IR and NMR manifestations of tetrel bonding are explored as spectroscopy offers a bridge to experimental examination of this phenomenon. In addition to the most common σ-hole type TBs, discussion is provided of π-hole interactions which are a result of a common alternate covalent bonding pattern of tetrel atoms.

Understanding noncovalent bonds and their controlling forces

The fundamental underpinnings of noncovalent bonds are presented, focusing on the σ-hole interactions that are closely related to the H-bond. Different means of assessing their strength and the factors that control it are discussed. The establishment of a noncovalent bond is monitored as the two subunits are brought together, allowing the electrostatic, charge redistribution, and other effects to slowly take hold. Methods are discussed that permit prediction as to which site an approaching nucleophile will be drawn, and the maximum number of bonds around a central atom in its normal or hypervalent states is assessed. The manner in which a pair of anions can be held together despite an overall Coulombic repulsion is explained. The possibility that first-row atoms can participate in such bonds is discussed, along with the introduction of a tetrel analog of the dihydrogen bond.

Versatility of the Cyano Group in Intermolecular Interactions

Several cyano groups are added to an alkane, alkene, and alkyne group so as to construct a Lewis acid molecule with a positive region of electrostatic potential in the area adjoining these substituents. Although each individual cyano group produces only a weak π-hole, when two or more such groups are properly situated, they can pool their π-holes into one much more intense positive region that is located midway between them. A NH3 base is attracted to this site, where it forms a strong noncovalent bond to the Lewis acid, amounting to as much as 13.6 kcal/mol. The precise nature of the bonding varies a bit from one complex to the next but typically contains a tetrel bond to the C atoms of the cyano groups or the C atoms of the linkage connecting the C≡N substituents. The placement of the cyano groups on a cyclic system like cyclopropane or cyclobutane has a mild weakening effect upon the binding. Although F is comparable to C≡N in terms of electron-withdrawing power, the replacement of cyano by F substituents substantially weakens the binding with NH3.
