A Comprehensive Study of Aluminum Anodization in Transition Modes

Anodization is a method to fabricate a tunable nanoporosity and thickness of alumina coating. This research is devoted to large-area hard anodization (HA), ultrahard anodization (UHA), and transitional modes. The phenomenon and challenges of UHA and the transition from HA are studied on large-area samples using linear-sweep voltammetry. The findings indicate that a uniform large-area thick coating can be achieved by utilizing pre-UHA modes. The study's results indicate that UHA leads only to coatings with non-uniform thickness in large-area anodization. The peculiarities of pre-UHA are studied using different temperatures (0, 5, 10, and 15 °C) and processing times (1, 2, 4, 6, and 12 h) in a 0.3 M oxalic acid electrolyte. The current study shows the possibility for the fast growth of thick nanoporous alumina up to 235 ± 4 µm for only 12 h.

French Fries-Like Bismuth Oxide: Physicochemical Properties, Electrical Conductivity and Photocatalytic Activity

Bismuth oxide synthesis using hydrothermal method has been conducted. This study aims to examine the effect of the hydrothermal reaction time on product characteristics and photocatalytic activity in degrading methyl orange dye. Bismuth oxide synthesis was initiated by dissolving bismuth nitrate pentahydrate (Bi(NO3)3.5H2O) and Na2SO4 in a distilled water and added NaOH gradually. The solution formed was transferred into a Teflon-lined autoclave and heated at 120 °C with time variations of 8–16 h. The formation of bismuth oxide was indicated by the vibrations of the Bi−O−Bi and Bi−O groups and the crystal structure consisting of a-Bi2O3, β-Bi2O3, and g-Bi2O3. In addition, the highest photocatalytic activity can be examined through several factors, such as: content of Bi−O−Bi and Bi−OH groups, crystal structure, band gap values, morphology, and surface area, acquired as a result of the effect of hydrothermal reaction time. Uniform arrays of gold nanoelectrodes with tuneable recess depth

Nanoelectrode arrays are much in demand in electroanalytical chemistry, electrocatalysis, and bioelectrochemistry. One of the promising approaches for the preparation of such systems is templated electrodeposition. In the present study, porous anodic alumina templates are used to prepare Au nanoelectrode arrays. Multistage electrodeposition is proposed for the formation of recessed electrodes with the ability to tune the distance between the surface of the porous template and the top surface of the nanoelectrodes. A set of complementary techniques, including chronoamperometry, coulometry, and scanning electron microscopy, are used to characterize the nanoelectrode arrays. The number of active nanoelectrodes is experimentally measured. The pathways to further improve the recessed nanoelectrode arrays based on anodic alumina templates are discussed.

Recent Advances in Nanoporous Anodic Alumina: Principles, Engineering, and Applications

The development of aluminum anodization technology features many stages. With the story stretching for almost a century, rather straightforward-from current perspective-technology, raised into an iconic nanofabrication technique. The intrinsic properties of alumina porous structures constitute the vast utility in distinct fields. Nanoporous anodic alumina can be a starting point for: Templates, photonic structures, membranes, drug delivery platforms or nanoparticles, and more. Current state of the art would not be possible without decades of consecutive findings, during which, step by step, the technique was more understood. This review aims at providing an update regarding recent discoveries-improvements in the fabrication technology, a deeper understanding of the process, and a practical application of the material-providing a narrative supported with a proper background.
