Extension of molecules with an inverted singlet-triplet gap with conjugated branches to alter the oscillator strength

Molecules that violate Hund's rule and possess negative singlet-triplet gaps (ΔEST) have been actively studied for their potential usage in organic light emitting diodes without the need for thermal activation. However, the weak oscillator strength from the symmetry of such molecules has been recognized as their shortcoming for their application in optoelectronic devices. A group of molecules with a common structural motif involving the original molecule with an inverted gap having branches consisting of conjugated molecules of varied structures and extent of conjugation have been predicted to have desirable oscillator strength, but only few detailed and comprehensive studies regarding the form of excited states and the reason behind the improved oscillator strength have been carried out. We show in this work a series of analyses that suggest that the increase of oscillator strength is correlated with the nature of the excited state changing from a localized excitation to a delocalized excitation involving the central molecule and the branches. The resulting oscillator strength thus depends on the energetic matching of the branching molecule and the central molecule, rather than solely the oscillator strength of the central molecule. From the ΔEST inversion point of view, the static correlation with low-lying doubly excited configurations, the key mechanism behind the inversion in the localized excited state, weakens as the excited states delocalize. As a consequence, the dynamic correlation has a more decisive effect in determining the singlet-triplet gap.

Accidental triplet harvesting in donor-acceptor dyads with low spin-orbit coupling

We present an accidental mechanism for efficient intersystem crossing (ISC) between singlet and triplet states with low spin-orbit coupling (SOC) in molecules having donor-acceptor (D-A) moieties separated by a Sigma bond. Our study shows that SOC between the lowest singlet excited state and the higher-lying triplet states, together with nuclear motion-driven coupling of this triplet state with lower-lying triplet states during the free rotation about a Sigma bond, is one of the possible ways to achieve the experimentally observed ISC rate for a class of D-A type photoredox catalysts. This mechanism is found to be the dominant contributor to the ISC process with the corresponding rate reaching a maximum at a dihedral angle in the range of 72°-78° between the D-A moieties of 10-(naphthalen-1-yl)-3,7-diphenyl-10H-phenoxazine and other molecules included in the study. We have further demonstrated that the same mechanism is operative in a specific spirobis[anthracene]dione molecule, where the D and A moieties are interlocked near to the optimal dihedral angle, indicating the plausible effectiveness of the proposed mechanism. The present finding is expected to have implications in strategies for the synthesis of new generations of triplet-harvesting organic molecules.

Unified Framework for Photophysical Rate Calculations in TADF Molecules

One of the challenges in organic light-emitting diodes research is finding ways to increase device efficiency by making use of the triplet excitons that are inevitably generated in the process of electroluminescence. One way to do so is by thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF), a process in which triplet excitons undergo upconversion to singlet states, allowing them to relax radiatively. The discovery of this phenomenon has ensued a quest for new materials that are able to effectively take advantage of this mechanism. From a theoretical standpoint, this requires the capacity to estimate the rates of the various processes involved in the photophysics of candidate molecules, such as intersystem crossing, reverse intersystem crossing, fluorescence, and phosphorescence. Here, we present a method that is able to, within a single framework, compute all of these rates and predict the photophysics of new molecules. We apply the method to two TADF molecules and show that results compare favorably with other theoretical approaches and experimental results. Finally, we use a kinetic model to show how the calculated rates act in concert to produce different photophysical behavior.

Interrogation of O-ATRP Activation Conducted by Singlet and Triplet Excited States of Phenoxazine Photocatalysts

Organocatalyzed ATRP (O-ATRP) is a growing field exploiting organic chromophores as photoredox catalysts (PCs) that engage in dissociative electron-transfer (DET) activation of alkyl-halide initiators following absorption of light. Characterizing DET rate coefficients (k_act) and photochemical yields across various reaction conditions and PC photophysical properties will inform catalyst design and efficient use during polymerization. The studies described herein consider a class of phenoxazine PCs, where synthetic handles of core substitution and N-aryl substitution enable tunability of the electronic and spin characters of the catalyst excited state as well as DET reaction driving force (ΔG_ET⁰). Using Stern-Volmer quenching experiments through variation of the diethyl 2-bromo-2-methylmalonate (DBMM) initiator concentration, collisional quenching is observed. Eight independent measurements of k_act are reported as a function of ΔG_ET⁰ for four PCs: four triplet reactants and four singlets with k_act values ranging from 1.1 × 10⁸ M^-1 s^-1, where DET itself controls the rate, to 4.8 × 10⁹ M^-1 s^-1, where diffusion is rate-limiting. This overall data set, as well as a second one inclusive of five literature values from related systems, is readily modeled with only a single parameter of reorganization energy under the frameworks of the adiabatic Marcus electron-transfer theory and Marcus-Savéant theory of DET. The results provide a predictive map where k_act can be estimated if ΔG_ET⁰ is known and highlight that DET in these systems appears insensitive to PC reactant electronic and spin properties outside of their impact on the driving force. Next, on the basis of measured k_act values in selected PC systems and knowledge of their photophysics, we also consider activation yields specific to the reactant spin states as the DBMM initiator concentration is varied. In N-naphthyl-containing PCs characterized by near-unity intersystem crossing, the T₁ is certainly an important driver for efficient DET. However, at DBMM concentrations common to polymer synthesis, the S₁ is also active and drives 33% of DET reaction events. Even in systems with low yields of ISC, such as in N-phenyl-containing PCs, reaction yields can be driven to useful values by exploiting the S₁ under high DBMM concentration conditions. Finally, we have quantified photochemical reaction quantum yields, which take into account potential product loss processes after electron-transfer quenching events. Both S₁ and T₁ reactant states produce the PC^•+ radical cation with a common yield of 71%, thus offering no evidence for spin selectivity in deleterious back electron transfer. The subunity PC^•+ yields suggest that some combination of solvent (DMAc) oxidation and energy-wasting back electron transfer is likely at play and these pathways should be factored in subsequent mechanistic considerations.
