Reactivities of singlet oxygen: open-shell or closed-shell?

Spin-Restricted Descriptions of Singlet Oxygen Reactions from XMS-CASPT2 Benchmarks

Reactions of singlet oxygen are numerous, some of which are desired but many are unwanted. Therefore, the ability to correctly predict and interpret this reactivity for complex molecular systems is essential to our understanding of singlet oxygen reactions. DFT is widely used for predicting many reactions but is not suited to degenerate electronic structures; application to isolated singlet oxygen often uses the spin-unrestricted formalism, which results in severe spin contamination. In this work, we demonstrate that spin-restricted DFT can correctly describe the reaction pathway for four prototypical singlet oxygen reactions. By careful benchmarking with XMS-CASPT2, we show that, from the first transition state onward, the degeneracy of the 1Δg state is broken due to differing interactions of the (degenerate) π* orbitals with the organic substrate; this result is well replicated with DFT. These findings demonstrate the utility of using spin-restricted DFT to explore reactions, opening the way to confidently use this computationally efficient method for molecular systems of medium to large organic molecules.

Generation of singlet oxygen catalyzed by the room-temperature-stable anthraquinone anion radical

The chemical nature and the catalytic selectivity of the complex of anthraquinone and potassium tert-butoxide, AQ-KOtBu, in generating singlet oxygen (¹O₂) have been studied using a high-level ab initio method and density functional theory (DFT). The results suggest that the stable catalytic center of the AQ anion radical (semiquinone, [AQ˙]^-) can be produced at room temperature, which is due to the strong delocalization characteristics of electrons in potassium atoms. Two experimentally observed complexes, the ground state AQ-KOtBu, i.e., C₍₁₎, and the photoexcited AQ-KOtBu, i.e., C₍₂₎, can be distinguished via the two different electronic states (π-type and σ-type) of the tert-butoxide group. More interestingly, the catalytic selectivity of AQ-KOtBu to generate ¹O₂ was investigated using multistate density functional theory (MSDFT), and the results suggest that only open-shell ¹O₂ rather than the closed-shell component can be generated. This work explores the electronic structure and the catalytic nature of AQ-KOtBu, which is of great importance for the application of AQ and its derivatives.

Minimal Active Space for Diradicals Using Multistate Density Functional Theory

This work explores the electronic structure as well as the reactivity of singlet diradicals, making use of multistate density functional theory (MSDFT). In particular, we show that a minimal active space of two electrons in two orbitals is adequate to treat the relative energies of the singlet and triplet adiabatic ground state as well as the first singlet excited state in many cases. This is plausible because dynamic correlation is included in the first place in the optimization of orbitals in each determinant state via block-localized Kohn-Sham density functional theory. In addition, molecular fragment, i.e., block-localized Kohn-Sham orbitals, are optimized separately for each determinant, providing a variational diabatic representation of valence bond-like states, which are subsequently used in nonorthogonal state interactions (NOSIs). The computational procedure and its performance are illustrated on some prototypical diradical species. It is shown that NOSI calculations in MSDFT can be used to model bond dissociation and hydrogen-atom transfer reactions, employing a minimal number of configuration state functions as the basis states. For p- and s-types of diradicals, the closed-shell diradicals are found to be more reactive than the open-shell ones due to a larger diabatic coupling with the final product state. Such a diabatic representation may be useful to define reaction coordinates for electron transfer, proton transfer and coupled electron and proton transfer reactions in condensed-phase simulations.

New Approach in the Application of Conjugated Polymers: The Light-Activated Source of Versatile Singlet Oxygen Molecule

For many years, the research on conjugated polymers (CPs) has been mainly focused on their application in organic electronics. Recent works, however, show that due to the unique optical and photophysical properties of CPs, such as high absorption in UV–Vis or even near-infrared (NIR) region and efficient intra-/intermolecular energy transfer, which can be relatively easily optimized, CPs can be considered as an effective light-activated source of versatile and highly reactive singlet oxygen for medical or catalytic use. The aim of this short review is to present the novel possibilities that lie dormant in those exceptional polymers with the extended system of π-conjugated bonds.

Malondialdehyde (MDA) Production in Atherosclerosis Supplemented with Steamed Tomato

Background and Objective

Malondialdehyde (MDA) may increase influenced by free radicals due to lipid oxidation. Tomato induction considers able to prevent free radical damage and atherosclerosis. Therefore, this study aims to understand the effect of steamed-tomato extracts on MDA and its potential as an early diagnosis of atherosclerosis.

Materials and Methods

A total of 24 healthy 12 weeks-old male-rats were divided into four treatment groups, equally. A normal control group (K₁) was rats with placebo treatment. A negative control group (K₂) was the rats supplemented with 2 mL kg^-1 b.wt. per day of cholesterol until cholesterol. A K₃ group was atherosclerosis rats given with 20 mg kg^-1 b.wt. per day of atorvastatin and a K₄ was atherosclerotic rats supplemented with 16 mg kg^-1 b.wt. per day of tomato extract. All treatments were carried out for 60 consecutive days.

Results

Tomato extract in the K₄ group was succeeded in lowering MDA production. Carotenoid compounds in tomato extract are well known to be prevention agents against lipid oxidation and inhibit free radicals. MDA levels have increased significantly in atherosclerosis conditions, making it potentially noticeable during early atherosclerotic, therefore, potentially developed as biomarkers.

Conclusion

MDA levels increase significantly and simultaneously after high cholesterol diets and in line with lipid parameters and damaged blood vessels. The steamed-tomato extract can reduce MDA, lipids levels and protect endothelial from lipid oxidation. More research should be conducted to breakdown the MDA function in the molecular pathway, including MDA correlation to microRNA expression and cell signaling.
