Anisotropic Carrier Mobility and Spectral Fingerprints of Two-Dimensional γ-Phosphorus Carbide with Antisite Defects

We apply density functional theory to study carrier mobility in a γ-phosphorus carbide monolayer. Although previous calculations predicted high and anisotropic mobility in this material, we show that the mobility can be significantly influenced by common antisite defects. We demonstrate that at equilibrium concentrations defects do not inhibit carrier mobility up to temperatures of 1000 K. However, defects can change the mobility at high nonequilibrium concentrations of about 10^-4 to 10^-2 defects per atom. At the low end of this concentration range, defects act as traps for charge carriers and inhibit their mobility. At the high end of this range, defects change the effective carrier masses and deformation potentials, and they can lead to both an increase and a decrease in mobility. We also report the Raman and IR spectra associated with antisite defects. We predict new vibrational modes and shifts of the existing modes due to the defects.

MoS2 nanosheet induced destructive alterations in the Escherichia coli bacterial membrane

Two dimensional molybdenum disulfide (MoS₂) nanosheets have recently gained wide recognition for their efficient broad-spectrum antibacterial activity complemented with great biocompatibility and minimal bacterial resistance inducing capabilities. However, despite the numerous investigations, the molecular level interactions at the nano-bio interface responsible for their bactericidal activity remain obscure. Herein, through an atomistic molecular dynamics study, we attempt to seek an in-depth understanding of the atomic level details of the underlying mechanism of their antibacterial action against the Escherichia coli (E. coli) bacterial membrane. Our study reveals a two-step MoS₂ nanosheet interaction pathway with the bacterial membrane. The nanosheets spontaneously adhere to the membrane surface and prompt vigorous phospholipid extraction majorly via strong van der Waals interactions with lipid hydrophobic tails. The lipid extraction process originates a significant water intrusion in the bilayer hydrophobic region, signifying the onset of cytoplasmic leakage under realistic conditions. Further, a synergistic effect of lipid-lipid self-interactions and lipid-MoS₂ dispersion interactions drags the nanosheet to completely immerse in the bilayer hydrophobic core. The embedded nanosheets induce a layerwise structural rearrangement of the membrane lipids in their vicinity, thus altering the structural and dynamic features of the membrane in a localized manner by (i) increasing the lipid fatty acyl tail ordering and (ii) alleviating the lipid lateral dynamics. The detrimental efficacy of the nanosheets can be magnified by enlarging the nanosheet size or by increasing the nanosheet concentration. Our study concludes that the MoS₂ nanosheets can exhibit their antibacterial action through destructive phospholipid extraction as well as by altering the morphology of the membrane by embedding in the membrane core.

Self-assembly of ultra-small-sized carbon nanoparticles in lipid membrane disrupts its integrity

Although nanomaterials are widely studied in biomedical applications, the major concern of nanotoxicity still exists. Therefore, numerous studies have been conducted on the interactions of various biomolecules with various types of nanomaterials, including carbon nanotubes, graphene, fullerene etc. However, the size effect of nanomaterials is poorly documented, especially ultra-small particles. Here, the interactions of the smallest carbon nanoparticle (NP), C₂₈, with the cell membrane were studied using molecular dynamics (MD) simulations. The results show that similar to fullerene C₆₀, the C₂₈ NPs can self-assemble into stable clusters in water. Inside the membrane, the C₂₈ NPs are more prone to aggregate to form clusters than C₆₀ NPs. The reason for C₂₈ aggregation is characterized by the potential of mean force (PMF) and can be explained by the polarized nature of C₂₈ NPs while the acyl chains of lipids are nonpolar. At the C₂₈ cluster regions, the thickness of the membrane is significantly reduced by the C₂₈ aggregation. Accordingly, the membrane loses its structural integrity, and translocation of water molecules through it was observed. Thus, these results predict a stronger cytotoxicity to cells than C₆₀ NPs. The present findings might shed light on the understanding of the cytotoxicity of NPs with different sizes and would be helpful for the potential biomedical applications of carbon NPs, especially as antibacterial agents.

Defect-Induced Double-Stranded DNA Unwinding on Graphene

Several works have shown that graphene materials can effectively regulate the double-stranded DNA (dsDNA) structures and are used to remove antibiotic resistance genes in the environment, during which the morphology of the graphene surface plays a key role. However, the mechanism of how different graphene surfaces interact with dsDNA is poorly documented. Here, the interactions of dsDNA with defective graphene (D-Gra) and pristine graphene (P-Gra) have been explored by molecular dynamics simulations. Our data clearly showed that both D-Gra and P-Gra were able to attract dsDNA to form stable bindings. However, the structure evolutions of dsDNA are distinctly different. In detail, D-Gra can initiate quick unwinding of dsDNA and cause significant structural disruption. While for P-Gra, it demonstrated a much weaker capability to disrupt the dsDNA structure. This difference is due to the strong electrostatic interaction between defects and DNA nucleotides. Nucleotides can be highly restricted by the defect while the other parts of dsDNA could move along the transverse directions of D-Gra. This effectively introduces a "pulling force" from the defect that causes the breaking of the hydrogen bonds between dsDNA base pairs. Such force finally leads to the serious unwinding of dsDNA. Our present findings could help us to better understand the molecular mechanism of how the dsDNA canonical B-form was lost upon adsorption to graphene. The findings of the key roles of defects on graphene are beneficial for the design of functional graphenic materials for biological and medical applications through nanostructure engineering.
