Bio-catalytic nanoparticle shaping for preparing mesoscopic assemblies of semiconductor quantum dots and organic molecules

We report a unique bio-catalytic nanoparticle shaping (BNS) method for preparing a variety of mesoscopic particles by a facile process. For example, the BNS method affords mesoscopic QD assembly dispersions. Large-size sedimentations (>1 μm) of QDs are first formed using oligo-L-lysine linkers. These then undergo controlled enzymatic cleavage of the linkers using trypsin, which surprisingly leads to mesoscopic particles about 84 nm in size with a narrow size distribution. A detailed mechanism of the BNS method is investigated using tetrakis(4-carboxyphenyl)porphyrin (TCPP), instead of QDs, as a probe molecule. Interestingly, the BNS method can also be applied to other combinations of enzymes and enzymatically degradable linkers, such as hyaluronidase with hyaluronan. As a potential application, the mesoscopic particles of QDs and oligo-lysine exhibit their ability to act as a drug delivery carrier originating from the features of both QDs and oligo-lysine. The BNS method demonstrates the universality and versatility of preparing mesoscopic particles and opens new doors for studying QD assemblies and molecular-based mesoscopic particles.

Porphyrin-Based Nanomaterials for the Photocatalytic Remediation of Wastewater: Recent Advances and Perspectives

Self-organized, well-defined porphyrin-based nanostructures with controllable sizes and morphologies are in high demand for the photodegradation of hazardous contaminants under sunlight. From this perspective, this review summarizes the development progress in the fabrication of porphyrin-based nanostructures by changing their synthetic strategies and designs. Porphyrin-based nanostructures can be fabricated using several methods, including ionic self-assembly, metal-ligand coordination, reprecipitation, and surfactant-assisted methods. The synthetic utility of porphyrins permits the organization of porphyrin building blocks into nanostructures, which can remarkably improve their light-harvesting properties and photostability. The tunable functionalization and distinctive structures of porphyrin nanomaterials trigger the junction of the charge-transfer mechanism and facilitate the photodegradation of pollutant dyes. Finally, porphyrin nanomaterials or porphyrin/metal nanohybrids are explored to amplify their photocatalytic efficiency.

Lacunary polyoxometalate oriented construction of dispersed Ni3S2 confined in WO3 for electrocatalytic water splitting

Manufacturing low-cost, high-performance and earth-rich catalysts for hydrogen evolution (HER) and oxygen evolution reactions (OER) is critical to achieving sustainable green hydrogen production. Herein, we utilize lacunary Keggin-structure [PW₉O₃₄]^9- (PW₉) as a molecular pre-assembly platform to anchor Ni within a single PW₉ molecule by vacancy-directed and nucleophile-induced effects for the uniform dispersion of Ni at the atomic level. The chemical coordination of Ni with PW₉ can avoid the aggregation of Ni and favor the exposure of active sites. The Ni₃S₂ confined by WO₃ prepared from controlled sulfidation of Ni₆PW₉/Nickel Foam (Ni₆PW₉/NF) exhibited excellent catalytic activity in both 0.5 M H₂SO₄ and 1 M KOH solutions, which required only 86 mV and 107 mV overpotentials for HER at a current density of 10 mA∙cm^-2 and 370 mV for OER at 200 mA∙cm^-2. This is attributed to the good dispersion of Ni at the atomic level induced by trivacant PW₉ and the enhanced intrinsic activity by synergistic effect of Ni and W. Therefore, the construction of active phase from the atomic level is insightful to the rational design of dispersed and efficient electrolytic catalysts.

Functional Nano-Objects by Electrostatic Self-Assembly: Structure, Switching, and Photocatalysis

The design of functional nano-objects by electrostatic self-assembly in solution signifies an emerging field with great potential. More specifically, the targeted combination of electrostatic interaction with other effects and interactions, such as the positioning of charges on stiff building blocks, the use of additional amphiphilic, π−π stacking building blocks, or polyelectrolytes with certain architectures, have recently promulgated electrostatic self-assembly to a principle for versatile defined structure formation. A large variety of architectures from spheres over rods and hollow spheres to networks in the size range of a few tenths to a few hundred nanometers can be formed. This review discusses the state-of-the-art of different approaches of nano-object formation by electrostatic self-assembly against the backdrop of corresponding solid materials and assemblies formed by other non-covalent interactions. In this regard, particularly promising is the facile formation of triggerable structures, i.e. size and shape switching through light, as well as the use of electrostatically assembled nano-objects for improved photocatalysis and the possible solar energy conversion in the future. Lately, this new field is eliciting an increasing amount of understanding; insights and limitations thereof are addressed in this article. Special emphasis is placed on the interconnection of molecular building block structures and the resulting nanoscale architecture via the key of thermodynamics.

Chromonic nematic liquid crystals in a room-temperature ionic liquid

Planar multiaromatic molecules hierarchically and selectively arrange into nematic chromonic liquid crystals in the room temperature ionic liquid 2-hydroxyethylammonium formate. In a proof of concept, these liquid crystals were used as reaction media to produce mesostructured silica materials under mild biomimetic conditions. Several other applications are envisaged.
