The use of main-group elements to mimic catalytic behavior of transition metals I: reduction of dinitrogen to ammonia catalyzed by bis(Lewis base)borylenium diradicals

A crystalline aluminium-carbon-based ambiphile capable of activation and catalytic transfer of ammonia in non-aqueous media

Despite recent achievements in the field of frustrated Lewis pairs (FLPs) for small molecule activations, the reversible activation and catalytic transformations of N-H-activated ammonia remain a challenge. Here we report on a rare combination of an aluminium Lewis acid and a carbon Lewis base. A so-called hidden FLP consisting of a phosphorus ylide featuring an aluminium fragment in the ortho position of a phenyl ring scaffold is introduced. Although the formation of the Lewis acid/base adduct is observed in the solid state, which at first glance leads to formally quenched FLP reactivity, we show that the title compound readily reacts with non-aqueous ammonia thermoneutrally and splits the N-H bond reversibly at ambient temperature. In addition, NH3 transfer reactions mediated by a main-group catalyst are presented. This proof-of-principle study is expected to initiate further activities in utilizing N-H-activated ammonia as a readily available, atom-economical nitrogen source.

A theoretical study on the photochemical generation of phenylborylene from phenyldiazidoborane

Organic borylenes are a kind of highly reactive species, which play important roles in a lot of reactions as vigorous intermediates. In this work, we investigated the photochemical generation mechanisms of phenylborylene (PhB) together with the side product N-phenylnitrenoiminoborane (PhNBN) from phenyldiazidoborane (PhBN₆) by extrusion of dinitrogen in the two lowest electronic singlet states (S₀ and S₁) based on the complete active space self-consistent field (CASSCF) and its second-order perturbation (CASPT2) methods combined with time-dependent density functional theory (TD-DFT) calculations. Our results show that the reaction PhBN₆ → PhB + 3N₂ involves stepwise N₂ extrusion three times and the azido region rearrangement. Moreover, we found that the studied photo-induced processes are kinetically feasible because the highest energy barrier is only 0.36 eV and excitation with light of wavelength 254 nm can provide enough excess energy to overcome these energy barriers. Importantly, we revealed that several conical intersections between S₁ and S₀ states participate and facilitate the studied photochemical processes. Our results not only clarify the experimental observations, (H. F. Bettinger, J. Am. Chem. Soc. 2006, 128, 2534), but also provide valuable insights into borylene chemistry.

Lewis Acid Assisted Brønsted Acid Catalysed Decarbonylation of Isocyanates: A Combined DFT and Experimental Study

An efficient and mild reaction protocol for the decarbonylation of isocyanates has been developed using catalytic amounts of Lewis acidic boranes. The electronic nature (electron withdrawing, electron neutral, and electron donating) and the position of the substituents (ortho/meta/para) bound to isocyanate controls the chain length and composition of the products formed in the reaction. Detailed DFT studies were undertaken to account for the formation of the mono/di‐carboxamidation products and benzoxazolone compounds.

On Neutral Unsaturated Ouroboric Borylenes

The search is on for stable isolated borylenes. Potential roles in modern synthetic chemistry for boron analogues of carbenes continue to motivate interest in locating them. Using density functional and ab initio methods, we posit and examine the thermochemistry, and chemical bonding, including aromaticity, of several classes of 5- and 6-membered borylenic rings. In these systems, cyclization relies on dative bonding (ouroboric coordination) and π donation to a monovalent boron center from an adjacent O center. Certain neutral five-membered rings (heterocyclic cyclopentadienyl analogues) in particular are found to exhibit exceptionally strong preferences for the singlet multiplicity, each with singlet-triplet (S-T) gaps in excess of 40 kcal·mol^-1. The singlet five-membered rings with the largest S-T gaps and some of the six-membered rings show evidence of weak aromaticity. Relationships of the form N = A·r^-b, in line with Gordy's and other functions linking bond order, N, and covalent bond length, are identified for dative B←O contacts, r, reinforced in rings by π-delocalization.

Mechanistic insights into the insertion and addition reactions of group 13 analogues of the six-membered N-heterocyclic carbenes: interplay of electrophilicity, basicity, and aromaticity governing the reactivity

Three fundamental concepts (aromaticity/basicity/electrophilicity), being heavily used in modern chemistry, have been applied in this work to study the chemical reactivity of six-membered-ring group 13 N-heterocyclic carbenes (G13-6-Rea; G13 = group 13 elements) using density functional theory (BP86-D3(BJ)/def2-TZVP). G13-6-Rea is isolobal to benzene. Two model reactions have been used in the present study: the insertion reaction of G13-6-Rea with methane and the [1 + 2] cycloaddition reaction of G13-6-Rea with ethene. Our theoretical analysis reveals that the chemical reactivity of B-6-Rea, Al-6-Rea, and Ga-6-Rea is governed by their HOMO (the sp²-σ lone pair orbital on the G13 element), and thus they can be considered nucleophiles. Conversely, the chemical behavior of In-6-Rea and Tl-6-Rea is determined by their LUMO (the vacant p-π orbital on the G13 element), and thus they can be considered electrophiles. On the basis of the VBSCD (valence bond state correlation diagram) model and ASM (activation strain model), this theoretical evidence demonstrates that the origin of activation barriers for the above model reactions is due to the atomic radius of the pivotal group 13 element in the six-membered-ring of G13-6-Rea. Accordingly, our theoretical conclusions suggest that the lower the atomic number and the smaller the atomic radius of the G13 atom, the higher the aromaticity of the six-membered-ring of G13-6-Rea and the smaller the singlet–triplet energy splitting ΔE_st of this N-heterocyclic carbene analogue, which will facilitate its chemical reactions. The theoretical findings originating from this study allow many predictions in experiments to be made.

On the basis of sophisticated theoretical models, the theoretical study demonstrated that the atomic radius of a group 13 element in a six-membered-ring NHC analogue plays an important role in determining its chemical reactivity.
