The effect of nanoparticulate PdO co-catalysts on the faradaic and light conversion efficiency of WO3 photoanodes for water oxidation

Synergistic effects of nano-structured WO3-Se heterojunction decorated by organic Nafion layer on improving photoelectrochemical performance

Exploration of high-performance photoanodes is considered as an essential challenge in photoelectrochemical (PEC) water splitting due to the complex four-electron reaction in water oxidation. Herein, the nano-structured WO₃-Se heterojunction decorated by organic Nafion layer is designed. The optimized WO₃-Se200-0.05Nafion photoanode shows a remarkable photocurrent of 1.40 mA cm^-2at 1.23 V versus reversible hydrogen electrode, which is 2.5-fold higher than that of pure WO₃nanosheets (WO₃NS) photoelectrode. Remarkably, the photocurrent increments of WO₃-Se200-0.05Nafion is larger than the increment sum of WO₃-Se200 and WO₃-0.05Nafion, which affirming the synergistic effect of Se nanospheres and Nafion layer. The improved PEC performances are attributed to the quick charge separation and transfer, the increased electric conductivity, and the excellent kinetics of oxygen evolution, which is derived from the strong interaction among WO₃, Se and Nafion. Meanwhile, the better visible-light harvesting from Se nanospheres as photosensitizer and the induction of transparent Nafion as a passivation layer can explain this synergy. It hopes this heterostructure design with organic Nafion decoration can inspire to exploit outstanding performance photoanodes for PEC water splitting.

Electroreductive synthesis of polyfunctionalized pyridin-2-ones from acetoacetanilides and carbon disulfide with oxygen evolution

A chemical reductant or a sacrificial electron donor is required in any reduction reactions, generally resulting in undesired chemical waste. Herein, we report a reductant-free reductive [3 + 2 + 1] annulation of β-keto amides with CS₂ enabled by the synergy of electro/copper/base using water as an innocuous anodic sacrifice with O₂ as a sustainable by-product. This electrochemical protocol is mild and provides access to polyfunctionalized pyridin-2-ones from simple starting materials in a single step.

Effect of a Cocatalyst on a Photoanode in Water Splitting: A Study of Scanning Electrochemical Microscopy

With a proper band gap of ∼2.4 eV for solar light absorption and suitable valence band edge position for oxygen evolution, scheelite-monoclinic bismuth vanadate (BiVO₄) has become one of the most attractive photocatalysts for efficient visible-light-driven photoelectrochemical (PEC) water splitting. Several studies have indicated that surface modification of BiVO₄ with a cocatalyst such as NiFe layered double hydroxide (LDH) can significantly increase the PEC water splitting performance of the catalyst. Herein, we experimentally investigated the charge transfer dynamics and charge carrier recombination processes by scanning electrochemical microscopy (SECM) with the feedback mode on the surface of BiVO₄ and BiVO₄/NiFe-LDH as model samples. The ratio of rate constants for photogenerated hole (k_h+⁰) to electron (k_e-⁰) via the photocatalyst of BiVO₄/NiFe-LDH reacting with the redox couple is found to be five times larger than that of BiVO₄ under illumination. In this case, the ratio of the rate constants k_h+⁰/k_e-⁰ stands for the interfacial charge recombination process. This implies the cocatalyst NiFe-LDH suppresses the electron back transfer greatly and finally reduces the surface recombination. Control experiments with cocatalysts CoPi and RuO_x onto BiVO₄ further verify this conclusion. Therefore, the SECM characterization allows us to make an overall analysis on the function of cocatalysts in the PEC water splitting system.
