Structural, magnetic, and magnetocaloric properties of the multiferroic host double perovskite compound Pr2FeCrO6

Magnetoelastic Coupling Evidence by Anisotropic Crossed Thermal Expansion in Magnetocaloric RSrCoFeO6 (R = Sm, Eu) Double Perovskites

Double perovskite oxides, characterized by their tunable magnetic properties and robust interconnection between the lattice and magnetic degrees of freedom, present an enticing foundation for advanced magnetic refrigeration materials. Herein, we delve into the influence of rare-earth elements on RSrCoFeO6 (R = Sm, Eu) disordered double perovskites by examining their structural, electronic, magnetic, and magnetocaloric properties. Temperature-dependent synchrotron X-ray diffraction analysis confirmed the stability of the orthorhombic phase (Pnma) across a wide temperature range. X-ray photoemission spectroscopy revealed that both Sm and Eu are in the 3+ state, whereas multiple states for Co2+/3+ and Fe3+/4+ are identified. The magnetic investigation and magnetocaloric effect (MCE) analysis brought to light the presence of a long-range antiferromagnetic (AFM) order with a second-order phase transition (SOPT) in both samples. The maximum magnetic entropy change ΔSMmax was approximately 0.9 J/kg K for both samples at applied field 0-7 T, manifesting prominently above Neel temperatures TN ≈ 93 K (Sm) and 84 K (Eu). Nevertheless, different relative cooling powers (RCP) of 112.6 J/kg (Sm) and 95.5 J/kg (Eu) were observed. A detailed analysis of the temperature-dependent lattice parameters shed light on a distinct magnetocaloric effect across the magnetic transition temperature, unveiling an anisotropic thermal expansion [αV = 1.41 × 10-5 K-1 (Sm) and αV = 1.54 × 10-5 K-1 (Eu)] wherein the thermal expansion axial ratio αbSm/αbEu = 0.61 became lower with increasing temperature, which suggests that the Eu sample experiences a greater thermal expansion in the b-axis direction. At the atomic bonding level, the evidence for magnetoelastic coupling around the magnetic transition temperatures TN was found through the anomalies along the average Co/Fe-O bond distance, formal valence, octahedral distortion, as well as an anisotropic lattice expansion.

B-site order/disorder in A2BB'O6and its correlation with their magnetic property

The disorder in any system affects their physical behavior. In this scenario, we report the possibility of disorder in A₂BB'O₆oxides and their effect on different magnetic properties. These systems show anti-site disorder by interchanging B and B' elements from their ordered position and giving rise to an anti-phase boundary. The presence of disorder leads to a reduction in saturationMand magnetic transition temperature. The disorder prevents the system from sharp magnetic transition which originates short-range clustered phase (or Griffiths phase) in the paramagnetic region just above the long-range magnetic transition temperature. Further, we report that the presence of anti-site disorder and anti-phase boundary in A₂BB'O₆oxides give different interesting magnetic phases like metamagnetic transition, spin-glass, exchange bias, magnetocaloric effect, magnetodielectric, magnetoresistance, spin-phonon coupling, etc.

Multiferroic and Magnetodielectric Effects in Multiferroic Pr2FeAlO6 Double Perovskite

Single-phase multiferroics that allow the coexistence of ferroelectric and magnetic ordering above room temperature are highly desirable, and offer a fundamental platform for novel functionality. In this work, a double perovskite multiferroic Pr₂FeAlO₆ ceramic is prepared using a sol-gel process followed by a quenching treatment. The well-crystallized and purified Pr₂FeAlO₆ in trigonal structure with space group R3c is confirmed. A combination of the ferroelectric (2P_r = 0.84 μC/cm², E_c = 7.78 kV/cm at an applied electric field of 20 kV/cm) and magnetic (2M_r = 433 memu/g, H_c = 3.3 kOe at an applied magnetic field of 1.0 T) hysteresis loops reveals the room-temperature multiferroic properties. Further, the magnetoelectric effect is observed from the measurements of magnetically induced dielectric response and polarization. The present results suggest a new complex oxide candidate for room-temperature multiferroic applications.

The effect of Sr substitution on the structural and physical properties of manganite perovskites Ca1-xSrxMnO3-δ (0 ≤ x ≤ 1)

Calcium manganite (CaMnO_3-δ) has been extensively utilized in many applications due to its unique physical and chemical properties. In this study, the effect of Sr-substitution at the Ca-site on the structural, magnetic, electronic and electrical properties of CaMnO₃ manganite perovskites is investigated in detail. The perovskite compounds Ca_1-xSr_xMnO_3-δ (x = 0, 0.25, 0.5, 0.75 and 1) were synthesized through the sol-gel method at 1200 °C. From the patterns of X-ray diffraction, it was observed that all of the synthesized compounds show a pure perovskite phase at room temperature. The refinement results of the perovskite series suggest that a structural transformation from an orthorhombic (Pnma) to a hexagonal (P6₃/mmc) system occurred for 0.50 < x ≤ 0.75. We note however that the sample with the composition x = 0.50 showed a phase mixture of orthorhombic (Pnma) and hexagonal (P6₃/mmc). Based on DFT calculations, we have demonstrated the energetic stability of all compounds by negative formation energy and confirmed the semiconductor behavior by the presence of a band gap. The change in the band gap value with the Sr content suggests the potential tuning of the electronic behavior of CaMnO₃-SrMnO₃ solid solution. Furthermore, as the temperature increases from 300 to 1000 K, the electrical resistivity exhibits a reduction while the Seebeck coefficient (S) shows an augmentation. The negative values of S indicated the n-type-semiconductor nature of all compounds. The obtained values of the activation energy from thermal evolution of resistivity suggested that the electrical transport behavior of all the compounds followed the mechanism of small polaron hopping. Power factor is greatly affected by the Sr amount and reached a maximum value at x = 0.50. Overall, introducing Sr into the CaMnO_3-δ matrix improved the power factor and reduced electrical resistivity. According to the obtained results, the studied manganite perovskites could be proposed as suitable materials for photocatalytic and thermoelectric applications.

A first-principles study on the phase stability and physical properties of a B-site ordered Nd2CrFeO6 double perovskite

Here, the first-principles predictions on the structural stability, magnetic behavior and electronic structure of B-site ordered double perovskite Nd₂CrFeO₆ have been reported. Initially, the ground state of the parent single perovskites NdCrO₃ and NdFeO₃ has been studied to determine the relevant Hubbard U parameter to investigate the properties of Nd₂CrFeO₆. The thermodynamic, mechanical, and dynamic stability analyses suggest the possibility of the synthesis of the Nd₂CrFeO₆ double perovskite at ambient pressure. The compound shows a ferrimagnetic nature with 2 μ_B net magnetic moment and the magnetic ordering temperature has been estimated to be ∼265 K. The electronic structure indicates a higher probability of direct photon transition over the indirect transition with a band gap of ∼1.85 eV. Additional effects of Nd (4f) spin and spin-orbit coupling on the band edges have been found to be negligible for this 4f-3d-3d spin system. This first-principles investigation predicts that due to the ferrimagnetic nature and a significantly lower band gap compared to those of its antiferromagnetic parent single perovskites, the B-site ordered Nd₂CrFeO₆ double perovskite could be a promising material for spintronic and visible-light driven energy applications.
