Experimental and Theoretical Investigation of Interfacial Engineering in Fe2O3/NiFe2O4 Heterostructures toward the Cycloaddition of CO2 with Styrene Oxide

The chemical fixation of CO2 into epoxides for the synthesis of cyclic carbonates is an appealing solution to both reduce global CO2 emission and produce fine chemicals, but it is still a prime challenge to develop a low-cost, earth-abundant, yet efficient solid catalyst. Herein, Fe2O3/NiFe2O4 heterostructures are facilely constructed for the highly efficient cycloaddition of CO2 with styrene oxide (SO) to produce styrene carbonate (SC). Both experimental findings and density functional theory (DFT) calculations substantiate the prominent electron transfer and charge redistribution within the heterointerfaces between the biphasic components, which induce a unique interfacial microenvironment that can facilitate the adsorption and activation of SO. This endows the biphasic catalyst with a substantially higher reactivity than the individual components. This study sheds new insights into the establishment of heterostructured catalysts consisting of transitional metal oxides for the high-efficiency production of SC from the cycloaddition of CO2 with SO.

Development of Heterobimetallic Al/Mg Complexes for the Very Rapid Ring-Opening Polymerization of Lactides

The successful architecture of active catalytic species with enhanced efficiencies is critical for the optimal exploitation of sustainable resources in industrially demanded processes. In this work, we describe the preparation of novel helical heterobimetallic Al/Mg-based complexes of the type [AlMe2(pbpamd-)MgR{κ1-O-(OC4H8O)}] [R = Et (1a), tBu (2a)] as potential catalysts. The design was performed through the sequential addition of the Al fragment to the ligand, followed by the Mg platform, resulting in a planar π-C2N2(sp2)-Al/Mg bridging core between metals. The new heterobimetallic species have been unambiguously characterized by single-crystal X-ray analysis. NOESY, DOSY, and EXSY NMR studies as well as density functional theory calculations corroborate both a rearrangement in solution to scorpionate complexes containing an unprecedented apical carbanion with a direct σ-C(sp3)-Al covalent bond named [{Mg(R)(pbpamd-) Al(Me)2}] [R = Et (1b), tBu (2b)] and an interconversion equilibrium between both isomers. We verified their utility and high efficiency as catalysts in the well-controlled ring-opening polymerization of the biorenewable l- and rac-lactide (LA) at 23 °C, reaching a remarkable turnover frequency value close to 25000 h-1 for rac-LA at this temperature and exerting a significant level of heteroselectivity (Pr = 0.80). Very interestingly, the kinetics demonstrate apparent first-order with respect to the catalyst and LA, which supports a synergic intramolecular cooperation between centers with electronic modulation among them.

Synthesis of cyclic carbonates from CO2 cycloaddition to bio-based epoxides and glycerol: an overview of recent development

Anthropogenic carbon dioxide (CO₂) emissions contribute significantly to global warming and deplete fossil carbon resources, prompting a shift to bio-based raw materials. The two main technologies for reducing CO₂ emissions are capturing and either storing or utilizing it. However, while capture and storage have high reduction potential, they lack economic feasibility. Conversely, by utilizing the CO₂ captured from streams and air to produce valuable products, it can become an asset and curb greenhouse gas effects. CO₂ is a challenging C1-building block due to its high kinetic inertness and thermodynamic stability, requiring high temperature and pressure conditions and a reactive catalytic system. Nonetheless, cyclic carbonate production by reacting epoxides and CO₂ is a promising green and sustainable chemistry reaction, with enormous potential applications as an electrolyte in lithium-ion batteries, a green solvent, and a monomer in polycarbonate production. This review focuses on the most recent developments in the synthesis of cyclic carbonates from glycerol and bio-based epoxides, as well as efficient methods for chemically transforming CO₂ using flow chemistry and novel reactor designs.

Functionalized β-Cyclodextrins Catalyzed Environment-Friendly Cycloaddition of Carbon Dioxide and Epoxides

Ammonium, imidazole, or pyridinium functionalized β-cyclodextrins (β-CDs) were used as efficient one-component bifunctional catalysts for the coupling reaction of carbon dioxide (CO₂) and epoxide without the addition of solvent and metal. The influence of different catalysts and reaction parameters on the catalytic performance were examined in detail. Under optimal conditions, Im-CD1-I catalysts functionalized with imidazole groups were able to convert various epoxides into target products with high selectivity and good conversion rates. The one-component bifunctional catalysts can also be recovered easily by filtration and reused at least for five times with only slight decrease in catalytic performance. Finally, a possible process for hydroxyl group-assisted ring-opening of epoxide and functionalized group- induced activation of CO₂ was presented.

Continuous Formation of Limonene Carbonates in Supercritical Carbon Dioxide

We present a continuous flow method for the conversion of bioderived limonene oxide and limonene dioxide to limonene carbonates using carbon dioxide in its supercritical state as a reagent and sole solvent. Various ammonium- and imidazolium-based ionic liquids were initially investigated in batch mode. For applying the best-performing and selective catalyst tetrabutylammonium chloride in continuous flow, the ionic liquid was physisorbed on mesoporous silica. In addition to the analysis of surface area and pore size distribution of the best-performing supported ionic liquid phase (SILP) catalysts via nitrogen physisorption, SILPs were characterized by diffuse reflectance infrared Fourier transform spectroscopy and thermogravimetric analysis and served as heterogeneous catalysts in continuous flow. Initially, the continuous flow conversion was optimized in short-term experiments resulting in the desired constant product outputs. Under these conditions, the long-term behavior of the SILP system was studied for a period of 48 h; no leaching of catalyst from the supporting material was observed in the case of limonene oxide and resulted in a yield of 16%. For limonene dioxide, just traces of leached catalysts were detected after reducing the catalyst loading from 30 to 15 wt %, thus enabling a constant product output in 17% yield over time.

Closing the loop in the synthesis of heteroscorpionate-based aluminium helicates: catalytic studies for cyclic carbonate synthesis

Novel polynuclear helical aluminium complexes supported by bulky heteroscorpionate ligands have been developed and characterised. The use of bulkier ligands has allowed the isolation of unprecedented intermediates for the preparation of helical aluminium complexes. The catalytic activity of these aluminium complexes for cyclic carbonates formation has also been investigated under mild reaction conditions. The combination of complex 16 and Bu₄NBr catalysed the synthesis of a broad range of monosubstituted cyclic carbonates from their corresponding epoxides and CO₂ at 25 °C and one bar of CO₂ pressure. This catalyst system also showed good catalytic activity for the preparation of disubstituted cyclic carbonates from internal epoxides and CO₂.

Cycloaddition of di-substituted epoxides and CO2 under ambient conditions catalysed by rare-earth poly(phenolate) complexes

Lanthanum complex 1/TBAI is the first catalyst to achieve the cycloaddition of 1,2-disubstituted epoxides with 1 bar CO2 at room temperature. A DFT study discloses that the poly(phenolato) ligand plays a key role in the product dissociation step.

Synergetic effect of ZnCo2O4/inorganic salt as a sustainable catalyst system for CO2 utilization

Currently, it is essential to consider the rapidly increasing emission of CO₂ into the atmosphere, causing major environmental issues such as climate change and global warming. In this work, we have developed the binary catalyst system (ZnCo₂O₄/inorganic salt) for chemical fixation of CO₂ with epoxides into cyclic carbonates without solvent, and all reactions were performed on a large scale using a 100 ml batch reactor. Two mesoporous catalysts of ZnCo₂O₄ with different architecture, such as flakes (ZnCo-F) and spheres (ZnCo-S) were synthesized and utilized as a heterogeneous catalyst for cycloaddition reaction. The bifunctional property of catalysts is mainly attributed to strong acidic and basic properties confirmed by TPD (NH₃ & CO₂) analysis. The ZnCo-F catalyst exhibited excellent conversion of propylene oxide (99.9%) with good corresponding selectivity of propylene carbonate (≥99%) in the presence of inorganic salt (KI) at 120 °C, 2 MPa, 3 h. In addition, ZnCo-F catalyst demonstrated good catalytic applicability towards the various substrates scope of the epoxide. Furthermore, the catalytic properties were examined by evaluating the reaction parameter such as catalyst loading, pressure, temperature and time. The proposed catalyst exhibited good reusability for cycloaddition reaction without significant change in its catalytic activity and proposed a possible reaction mechanism for chemical fixation of CO₂ with epoxide into cyclic carbonate over ZnCo-F/KI.

Efficient Bulky Organo-Zinc Scorpionates for the Stereoselective Production of Poly(rac-lactide)s

The direct reaction of the highly sterically demanding acetamidinate-based NNN'-scorpionate protioligand Hphbp^tamd [Hphbp^tamd = N,N'-di-p-tolylbis(3,5-di-tertbutylpyrazole-1-yl)acetamidine] with one equiv. of ZnMe₂ proceeds in high yield to the mononuclear alkyl zinc complex [ZnMe(κ³-phbp^tamd)] (1). Alternatively, the treatment of the corresponding lithium precursor [Li(phbp^tamd)(THF)] with ZnCl₂ yielded the halide complex [ZnCl(κ³-phbptamd)] (2). The X-ray crystal structure of 1 confirmed unambiguously a mononuclear entity in these complexes, with the zinc centre arranged with a pseudotetrahedral environment and the scorpionate ligand in a κ³-coordination mode. Interestingly, the inexpensive, low-toxic and easily prepared complexes 1 and 2 resulted in highly efficient catalysts for the ring-opening polymerisation of lactides, a sustainable bio-resourced process industrially demanded. Thus, complex 1 behaved as a single-component robust initiator for the living and immortal ROP of rac-lactide under very mild conditions after a few hours, reaching a TOF value up to 5520 h^-1 under bulk conditions. Preliminary kinetic studies revealed apparent zero-order dependence on monomer concentration in the absence of a cocatalyst. The PLA materials produced exhibited narrow dispersity values, good agreement between the experimental M_n values and monomer/benzyl alcohol ratios, as well as enhanced levels of heteroselectivity, reaching P_s values up to 0.74.

Highly Active CO2 Fixation into Cyclic Carbonates Catalyzed by Tetranuclear Aluminum Benzodiimidazole-Diylidene Adducts

A set of tetranuclear alkyl aluminum adducts 1 and 2 supported by benzodiimidazole-diylidene ligands L1, N,N’-(1,5-diisopropylbenzodiimidazole-2,6-diylidene)bis(propan-2-amine), and L2, N,N’-(1,5-dicyclohexyl-benzodiimidazole-2,6-diylidene)dicyclohexanamine were synthetized in exceptional yields and characterized by spectroscopic methods. These compounds were studied as catalysts for cyclic carbonate formation (3a–o) from their corresponding terminal epoxides (2a–o) and carbon dioxide utilizing tetrabutylammonium iodide as a nucleophile in the absence of a solvent. The experiments were carried out at 70 °C and 1 bar CO2 pressure for 24 h and adduct 1 was the most efficient catalyst for the synthesis of a large variety of monosubstituted cyclic carbonates with excellent conversions and yields.

NNC-Scorpionate Zirconium-Based Bicomponent Systems for the Efficient CO2 Fixation into a Variety of Cyclic Carbonates

Two new derivatives of the bis(3,5-dimethylpyrazol-1-yl)methane modified by introduction of organosilyl groups on the central carbon atom, one of which bearing a chiral fragment, have been easily prepared. We verified the potential utility of these compounds through the reaction with [Zr(NMe₂)₄] for the preparation of novel zirconium complexes in which an ancillary bis(pyrazol-1-yl)methanide acts as a robust monoanionic tridentate scorpionate in a κ³-NNC chelating mode, forming strained four-membered heterometallacycles. These κ³-NNC-scorpionate zirconium amides were investigated as catalysts in combination with tetra-n-butylammonium bromide as cocatalyst for CO₂ fixation into five-membered cyclic carbonate products. The study has led to the development of an efficient zirconium-based bicomponent system for the selective cycloaddition reaction of CO₂ with epoxides. Kinetics investigations confirmed apparent first-order dependence on the catalyst and cocatalyst concentrations. In addition, this system displays very broad substrate scope, including mono- and disubstituted substrates, as well as the challenging biorenewable terpene derived limonene oxide, under mild and solvent-free conditions.
