Tailored Metal-Organic Frameworks for Water Purification: Perfluorinated Fe-MOFs for Enhanced Heterogeneous Catalytic Ozonation

An industrially viable catalyst for heterogeneous catalytic ozonation (HCO) in water purification requires the characteristics of good dispersion of active species on its surface, efficient electron transfer for ozone decay, and maximum active species utilization. While metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) represent an attractive platform for HCO, the metal nodes in the unmodified MOFs exhibit low catalytic activity. Herein, we present a perfluorinated Fe-MOF catalyst by substituting H atoms on the metalated ligands with F atoms (termed 4F-MIL-88B) to induce structure evolution. The Lewis acidity of 4F-MIL-88B was enhanced via the formation of Fe nodes, tailoring the electron distribution on the catalyst surface. As a result of catalyst modification, the rate constant for degradation of the target compounds examined increased by ∼700% compared with that observed for the unmodified catalyst. Experimental evidence and theoretical calculations showed that the modulated polarity and the enhanced electron transfer between the catalyst and ozone molecules contributed to the adsorption and transformation of O3 to •OH on the catalyst surface. Overall, the results of this study highlight the significance of tailoring the metalated ligands to develop highly efficient and stable MOF catalysts for HCO and provide an in-depth mechanistic understanding of their structure-function evolution, which is expected to facilitate the applications of nanomaterial-based processes in water purification.

Defect-induced tuning of polarity-dependent adsorption in hydrophobic-hydrophilic UiO-66

Structural defects in metal-organic frameworks can be exploited to tune material properties. In the case of UiO-66 material, they may change its nature from hydrophobic to hydrophilic and therefore affect the mechanism of adsorption of polar and non-polar molecules. In this work, we focused on understanding this mechanism during adsorption of molecules with different dipole moments, using the standard volumetric adsorption measurements, IR spectroscopy, DFT + D calculations, and Monte Carlo calculations. Average occupation profiles showed that polar and nonpolar molecules change their preferences for adsorption sites. Hence, defects in the structure can be used to tune the adsorption properties of the MOF as well as to control the position of the adsorbates within the micropores of UiO-66.

MOF nanoparticles as heterogeneous catalysts for direct amide bond formations

The influence of composition and textural characteristics of a family of ultra-small isoreticular UiO-type metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) with different functionalized and extended linkers on their catalytic performance is evaluated. Two direct amide bond formations across four different substrates (benzylamine + phenylacetic acid and aniline + formic acid) are employed as proof-of-concept reactions to test the activity of the Zr-MOF nanoparticles. The reaction rates of amide bond formation are evaluated against physico-chemical properties such as crystallinity, porosity, particle size or linker functionality, alongside the Lewis acid and hydrophobic properties of the MOFs, in order to gain insights into the catalytic mechanism and optimal properties for its enhancement.

Enhancing the Catalytic Activity of MOF-808 Towards Peptide Bond Hydrolysis through Synthetic Modulations

The performance of MOFs in catalysis is largely derived from structural features, and much work has focused on introducing structural changes such as defects or ligand functionalisation to boost the reactivity of the MOF. However, the effects of different parameters chosen for the synthesis on the catalytic reactivity of the resulting MOF remains poorly understood. Here, we evaluate the role of metal precursor on the reactivity of Zr-based MOF-808 towards hydrolysis of the peptide bond in the glycylglycine model substrate. In addition, the effect of synthesis temperature and duration has been investigated. Surprisingly, the metal precursor was found to have a large influence on the reactivity of the MOF, surpassing the effect of particle size or number of defects. Additionally, we show that by careful selection of the Zr-salt precursor and temperature used in MOF syntheses, equally active MOF catalysts could be obtained after a 20 minute synthesis compared to 24 h synthesis.

Controlling the molecular diffusion in MOFs with the acidity of monocarboxylate modulators

The catalytic performance of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) is related to their physicochemical properties, such as particle size, defect chemistry and porosity, which can be potentially controlled by coordination modulation. By combining PXRD, ¹HNMR, FT-IR, and N₂ uptake measurements we have gained insights into the control of different types of defects (missing linker or missing cluster consequence of the spatial distribution of missing linkers, and a combination of both) by the type of modulator employed. We show that the molar percent of defects, either as missing linkers or as a part of missing cluster defects, is related to the acidity of a modulator and its subsequent incorporation into the UiO-66 structure. Modulators with strong acidity and small size result in a considerable defect induction that causes an increase in the external surface area and mesopore volume, which is beneficial for the ring-opening of epoxides with amines, using UiO-66 defect-modulated MOFs as heterogeneous catalysts.

Metal doping of porous materials via a post-synthetic mechano-chemical approach: a general route to design low-loaded versatile catalytic systems

Mesoporous silica materials doped with metals (Fe/Zr) presented superior catalytic performance for oxidations. The use of MOFs as metal sources improved the metal distribution, and allowed a fine-tuning of Brønsted–Lewis acidity depending on the MOF.

Tandem synthesis of tetrahydroquinolines and identification of the reaction network by operando NMR

Bifunctional MOF supported Pd nanoparticles for the one-pot tandem synthesis of substituted tetrahydroquinolines were developed, and operando high-pressure MAS-NMR were performed to understand the complex reaction network.

Organic synthesis of high added value molecules with MOF catalysts

Recent examples of organic synthesis of fine chemicals and pharmaceuticals in confined spaces of MOFs are highlighted and compared with silica-based ordered porous solids, such as zeolites or mesoporous (organo)silica. These heterogeneous catalysts offer the possibility of stabilizing the desired transition states and/or intermediates during organic transformations of functional groups and (C-C/C-N) bond forming steps towards the desired functional high added value molecular scaffolds. A short introduction on zeolites, mesoporous silica and metal-organic frameworks is followed by relevant applications in which confined active sites in the pores promote single or multi-step organic synthesis of industrially relevant molecules. A critical discussion on the catalytic performances of the different types of hybrid inorganic-organic catalysts in the synthesis of O- and N-containing acyclic and heterocyclic molecules has been presented.
