Silver-Promoted Three-Component Synthesis of Perfluoroalkenyl Pyrroles through Partial Defluorinative Functionalization of Perfluoroalkyl Halides

A silver-promoted three-component heterocyclization of alkynes, perfluoroalkyl halides, and 1,3-dinucleophiles was developed for the efficient synthesis of privileged (E)-perfluoroalkenyl pyrroles. The reaction proceeded through a rationally designed sequence of radical perfluoroalkylation and intramolecular defluorinative [3 + 2]-heterocyclization. The utility of perfluoroalkyl halide as a perfluoroalkenyl reagent, by selective and controllable functionalization of two inert C(sp3)-F bonds at vicinal carbon centers on the perfluoroalkyl chain, provides a new reaction mode for the synthesis of value-added organofluorides starting from the easily available and low-cost fluorinated feedstock.

Metal-free visible-light-induced hydroxy-perfluoroalkylation of conjugated olefins using enamine catalyst

We developed a simple and sustainable method for the hydroxy-perfluoroalkylation of electron-deficient conjugated olefins and styrenes. In this protcol, in situ generated enamine forms electron-donor-accepter (EDA) complexes with perfluoroalkyl iodide, and reaction proceed with visible-light irradiation. Tertiary amine also interacts with perfluoroalkyl iodide via halogen-bonding, promoting the perfluoroalkyl radical generation. This reaction does not require any transition-metal or photoredox catalyst, and gaseous oxygen is used as the green hydroxy source. Moreover, various commercially available substrates and perfluoroalkyl iodides were tolerated, affording the desired hydroxy-perfluoroalkylated products in good to moderate yields (>50 examples, up to 90%).

Photocatalytic Aerobic Dehydrogenation of N-Heterocycles with Ir(III) Photosensitizers Bearing the 2(2'-Pyridyl)benzimidazole Scaffold

Photoredox catalysis constitutes a very powerful tool in organic synthesis, due to its versatility, efficiency, and the mild conditions required by photoinduced transformations. In this paper, we present an efficient and selective photocatalytic procedure for the aerobic oxidative dehydrogenation of partially saturated N-heterocycles to afford the respective N-heteroarenes (indoles, quinolines, acridines, and quinoxalines). The protocol involves the use of new Ir(III) biscyclometalated photocatalysts of the general formula [Ir(C^N)₂(N^N')]Cl, where the C^N ligand is 2-(2,4-difluorophenyl)pyridinate, and N^N' are different ligands based on the 2-(2'-pyridyl)benzimidazole scaffold. In-depth electrochemical and photophysical studies as well as DFT calculations have allowed us to establish structure-activity relationships, which provide insights for the rational design of efficient metal-based dyes in photocatalytic oxidation reactions. In addition, we have formulated a dual mechanism, mediated by the radical anion superoxide, for the above-mentioned transformations.

Recent Progress on Photocatalytic Synthesis of Ester Derivatives and Reaction Mechanisms

Esters and their derivatives are distributed widely in natural products, pharmaceuticals, fine chemicals and other fields. Esters are important building blocks in pharmaceuticals such as clopidogrel, methylphenidate, fenofibrate, travoprost, prasugrel, oseltamivir, eszopiclone and fluticasone. Therefore, esterification reaction becomes more and more popular in the photochemical field. In this review, we highlight three types of reactions to synthesize esters using photochemical strategies. The reaction mechanisms involve mainly single electron transfer, energy transfer or other radical procedures.

Photoredox Catalysis for the Fabrication of Water-Repellent Surfaces with Application for Oil/Water Separation

Silanization processes with perfluoroalkyl silanes have been demonstrated to be effective in developing advanced materials with many functional properties, including hydrophobicity, water repellency, and self-cleaning properties. However, practical industrial applications of perfluoroalkyl silanes are limited by their extremely high cost. On the basis of our recent work on photoredox catalysis for amidation with perfluoroalkyl iodides, its application for surface chemical modification on filter paper, as an illustrative example, has been developed and evaluated. Before photocatalytic amidation, the surface is functionalized with amine functional groups by silanization with 3-(trimethoxysilyl)propylamine. All chemically modified surfaces have been fully characterized by attenuated total reflection infrared (ATR-IR), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), scanning electron microscopy with energy-dispersive spectroscopy (SEM-EDS), and three-dimensional (3D) profiling to confirm the successful silanization and photocatalytic amidation. After surface modification of the filter papers with perfluoroalkanamide, they show high water repellency and hydrophobicity with contact angles over 120°. These filter papers possess high wetting selectivity, which can be used to effectively separate the organic and aqueous biphasic mixtures. The perfluoroalkanamide-modified filter papers can be used for separating organic/aqueous biphasic mixtures over many cycles without lowering the separating efficiency, indicating their reusability and excellent durability.
