Halide-Salt-Free Synthesis of Silver Nanowires with High Yield and Purity for Transparent Conductive Films

To date, silver nanowires (AgNWs) are routinely synthesized. However, the controllable preparation of AgNWs without any halide salts has not reached a similar level. In particular, the halide-salt-free polyol synthesis of AgNWs commonly occurs above 413 K, and the property of AgNWs obtained is not so easy to control. In this study, a facile synthesis of AgNWs with a yield of up to ∼90% in an average length of 75 μm was successfully performed without any halide salts. The fabricated AgNW transparent conductive films (TCFs) show a transmittance of 81.7% (92.3% for the AgNW network only without substrate) at a sheet resistance of 12.25 Ω/square. In addition, the AgNW films show distinguished mechanical properties. More importantly, the reaction mechanism for AgNWs was briefly discussed, and the importance of reaction temperature, the mass ratio of poly(vinylpyrrolidone) (PVP)/AgNO₃, and the atmosphere was emphasized. This knowledge will help enhance the reproducibility and scalability of polyol synthesis of high-quality AgNWs.

Nano-CuFe2O3-catalyzed green synthesis of novel quinazolinone-tetrazole hybrids as anti-cancer agents

A novel green protocol has been developed for the synthesis of quinazolinone-tetrazole conjugates (7a-g, 8a-g and 9a-g) using recyclable nano-CuFe₂O₃ catalyst in water. Initially, 2-mercapto-3-substituted phenethylquinazolin-4(3H)-one (5a-c) was prepared by using nano-CuFe₂O₃ catalyst in water. Then, compounds (5a-c) were reacted with 1-bromo-3-chloropropane under nano-CuFe₂O₃ catalyst in water solvent to give S-alkylated quinazolinone core intermediate (6a-c), which was subsequently reacted with 1-substituted-1H-tetrazole-5-thiol (2a-g) by employing the similar reaction conditions to afford the final target compounds. The regioselective formation of C-S bond was unambiguously confirmed by single-crystal X-ray diffraction. The anti-cancer activity of the derivatives on various cancer cell lines such as SIHA, MD-AMB-231 and HepG2 was evaluated. Remarkably, compounds, 7f, 8f, 9a, 9d and 9f, showed potent activity in MD-AMB-231 cancer cell line (IC₅₀: 9.13-10.3 µM), while the same derivatives showed significant potent activity in SiHa and HepG2 cancer cell lines (IC₅₀: 17.46-27.0 µM). Most significantly, compound 7o (IC₅₀: 8.15 µM) showed potent activity, compared to the drug etoposide (IC₅₀: 18.11 µM) against MD-AMB-231 cell line. Flow cytometry analysis revealed that compounds 7f, 8f, 9a, 9d and 9f arrested the cell growth in the G1 phase in MD-AMB-231 cell line.

Photocatalytic Degradation of Rhodamine B Dye and Hydrogen Evolution by Hydrothermally Synthesized NaBH4—Spiked ZnS Nanostructures

Metal sulphides, including zinc sulphide (ZnS), are semiconductor photocatalysts that have been investigated for the photocatalytic degradation of organic pollutants as well as their activity during the hydrogen evolution reaction and water splitting. However, devising ZnS photocatalysts with a high overall quantum efficiency has been a challenge due to the rapid recombination rates of charge carriers. Various strategies, including the control of size and morphology of ZnS nanoparticles, have been proposed to overcome these drawbacks. In this work, ZnS samples with different morphologies were prepared from zinc and sulphur powders via a facile hydrothermal method by varying the amount of sodium borohydride used as a reducing agent. The structural properties of the ZnS nanoparticles were analysed by X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) techniques. All-electron hybrid density functional theory calculations were employed to elucidate the effect of sulphur and zinc vacancies occurring in the bulk as well as (220) surface on the overall electronic properties and absorption of ZnS. Considerable differences in the defect level positions were observed between the bulk and surface of ZnS while the adsorption of NaBH₄ was found to be highly favourable but without any significant effect on the band gap of ZnS. The photocatalytic activity of ZnS was evaluated for the degradation of rhodamine B dye under UV irradiation and hydrogen generation from water. The ZnS nanoparticles photo-catalytically degraded Rhodamine B dye effectively, with the sample containing 0.01 mol NaBH₄ being the most efficient. The samples also showed activity for hydrogen evolution, but with less H₂ produced compared to when untreated samples of ZnS were used. These findings suggest that ZnS nanoparticles are effective photocatalysts for the degradation of rhodamine B dyes as well as the hydrogen evolution, but rapid recombination of charge carriers remains a factor that needs future optimization.
