Cu(i) complex bearing a PNP-pincer-type phosphaalkene ligand with a bulky fused-ring Eind group: properties and applications to FLP-type bond activation and catalytic CO2 reduction

Copper(I) Complexes of Amide Functionalized Bisphosphine: Proximity Enhanced Metal-Ligand Cooperativity and Its Catalytic Advantage in C(sp3)-H Bond Activation of Unactivated Cycloalkanes in Dehydrogenative Carboxylation Reactions

The reactions of amide functionalized bisphosphine, o-Ph2PC6H4C-(O)N(H)C6H4PPh2-o (1) (BalaHariPhos), with copper salts is described. Treatment of 1 with CuX in a 1:1 molar ratio yielded chelate complexes of the type [CuX{(o-Ph2PC6H4C(O)N(H)C6H4PPh2-o)}-κ2-P,P] (X = Cl, 2; Br, 3; and I, 4), which on subsequent treatment with KOtBu resulted in a dimeric complex [Cu(o-Ph2PC6H4C(O)(N)C6H4PPh2-o)]2 (5). Interestingly, complexes 2-4 showed weak N-H···Cu interactions. These weak H-bonding interactions are studied in detail both experimentally and computationally. Also, CuI complexes 2-5 were employed in the oxidative dehydrogenative carboxylation (ODC) of unactivated cycloalkanes in the presence of carboxylic acids to form the corresponding allylic esters. Among complexes 2-5, halide-free dimeric CuI complex 5 showed excellent metal-ligand cooperativity in the oxidative dehydrogenative carboxylation (ODC) in the presence of carboxylic acids to form the corresponding allylic esters through C(sp3)-H bond activation of unactivated cycloalkanes. Mechanistic details of the catalytic process were established by isolating the precatalyst [Cu{(o-Ph2PC6H4C(O)(NH)C6H4PPh2-o)-κ2-P,P}(OOCPh)] (6) and fully characterized by mass spectrometry, NMR data, and single-crystal X-ray analysis. Density functional theory-based calculations further provided a quantitative understanding of the energetics of a series of H atom transfer steps occurring in the catalytic cycle.

Activation of the C[double bond, length as m-dash]P bond in phosphanylphosphaalkenes (C[double bond, length as m-dash]P-P bond system) in the reaction with nucleophilic reagents: MeLi, nBuLi and tBuLi

Three reactions of phosphanylphosphaalkene (1) with nucleophiles were performed to activate the diphosphorus monomer. We observed similar results in the reactions with MeLi and nBuLi, in which the P-P bond is cleavaged and triphosphorus systems [P(Me)₂-CH(biph)-CH(biph)-P-(PtBu₂)]^- (1a'') and [P(nBu)₂-CH(biph)-CH(biph)-P-(PtBu₂)]^- (1b''), respectively, are formed depending on the nucleophilic reagent (biph = biphenyl). In the case of tBuLi, the P-P bond remains intact; on the phosphorus atom, only one -tBu group is substituted, and as a result, [(biph)(H)C-P(tBu)-PtBu₂]^- (1c) is generated as a stable carbanion. We additionally investigated the effect of substitution in the phenyl ring in the course of these reactions by involving two other phosphanylphosphaalkenes (3 and 4). All initial reactions were conducted in tetrahydrofuran (THF) solution at ambient temperature.

Chemistry of Several Sterically Bulky Molecules with P=P, P=C, and C≡P Bond

Several sterically protected, low-coordinate organophosphorus compounds with P=P, P=C, and C≡P bond are described in this study. Molecules such as diphosphenes, phosphaalkenes, 1-phosphaallenes, 1,3-diphosphaallenes, 3,4-diphosphinidenecyclobutenes, and phosphaalkynes are stabilized with an extremely bulky 2,4,6-tri-t-butylphenyl (Mes*) group. The synthesis, structures, physical, and chemical properties of these molecules are discussed, together with some successful applications in catalytic organic reactions.

Palladium(II) complexes of bis(diphosphene) with different coordination behaviors

Organophosphorus compounds possessing a P-P double-bond character are intriguing materials in coordination chemistry because it is possible to form a variety of coordination modes from the π-bond in addition to the lone pairs. We report herein the complexation of a new bidentate ligand, ethylene-tethered bis(binaphthyldiphosphene) (S,S)-2, with palladium(II) species. The reaction of (S,S)-2 with [Pd(π-allyl)(cod)](SbF₆) and PdCl₂(cod) afforded η¹/η¹-bis(diphosphene) complex 7 and η¹-diphosphene/η²-phosphanylphosphide complex 8, respectively. The latter was characterized by a chloride migration from the palladium atom to a phosphorus atom due to the high electron-accepting character of the PP moiety. Theoretical calculations revealed the migration process and nature of complex 8.

Rational Design of Main Group Metal-Embedded Nitrogen-Doped Carbon Materials as Frustrated Lewis Pair Catalysts for CO2 Hydrogenation to Formic Acid

Developing efficient and inexpensive main group catalysts for CO₂ conversion and utilization has attracted increasing attention, as the conversion process would be both economical and environmentally benign. Here, based on the main group element Al, we designed several heterogeneous frustrated Lewis acid/base pair (FLP) catalysts and performed extensive first-principles calculations for the hydrogenation of CO₂. These catalysts, including Al@N-Gr-1, Al@N-Gr-2, and Al@C₂N, are composed of a single Al atom and two-dimensional (2D) N-doped carbon-based materials to form frustrated Al/C or Al/N Lewis acid/base pairs, which are all predicted to have high reactivity to absorb and activate hydrogen (H₂). Compared with Al@N-Gr-1, both Al@N-Gr-2 and Al@C₂N, especially Al@N-Gr-2, containing Al/N Lewis pairs exhibit better catalytic activity for CO₂ hydrogenation with lower activation energies. CO₂ hydrogenation on the three catalysts prefers to go through a three-step mechanism, i.e., the heterolytic dissociation of H₂, followed by the transfer of the hydride near Al to CO₂, and finally the activation of a second H₂ molecule. Other IIIA group element (B and Ga)-embedded N-Gr-2 materials (B@N-Gr-2 and Ga@N-Gr-2) were also explored and compared. Both Al@N-Gr-2 and Ga@N-Gr-2 show higher catalytic activity for CO₂ hydrogenation to HCOOH than B@N-Gr-2. However, the CO₂ hydrogenation path on Ga@N-Gr-2 tends to follow a two-step mechanism, including H₂ dissociation and subsequent hydrogen transfer. The present study provides a potential solution for CO₂ hydrogenation by designing novel and effective FLP catalysts based on main group elements.

Diverse Uses of the Reaction of Frustrated Lewis Pair (FLP) with Hydrogen

The articulation of the notion of "frustrated Lewis pairs" (FLPs) emerged from the discovery that H₂ can be reversibly activated by combinations of sterically encumbered main group Lewis acids and bases. This has prompted numerous studies focused on various perturbations of the Lewis acid/base combinations and the applications to organic reductions. This Perspective focuses on the new directions and developments that are emerging from this FLP chemistry involving hydrogen. Three areas are discussed including new applications and approaches to FLP reductions, the reductions of small molecules, and the advances in heterogeneous FLP systems. These foci serve to illustrate that despite having its roots in main group chemistry, this simple concept of FLPs is being applied across the discipline.

Partnering a Three-Coordinate Gallium Cation with a Hydroborate Counter-Ion for the Catalytic Hydrosilylation of CO2

A novel β-diketiminate stabilized gallium hydride, (^Dipp L)Ga(Ad)H (where (^Dipp L)={HC(MeCDippN)₂ }, Dipp=2,6-diisopropylphenyl and Ad=1-adamantyl), has been synthesized and shown to undergo insertion of carbon dioxide into the Ga-H bond under mild conditions. In this case, treatment of the resulting κ¹ -formate complex with triethylsilane does not lead to regeneration of the hydride precursor. However, when combined with B(C₆ F₅ )₃ , (^Dipp L)Ga(Ad)H catalyses the reductive hydrosilylation of CO₂ . Under stoichiometric conditions, the addition of one equivalent of B(C₆ F₅ )₃ to (^Dipp L)Ga(Ad)H leads to the formation of a 3-coordinate cationic gallane complex, partnered with a hydroborate anion, [(^Dipp L)Ga(Ad)][HB(C₆ F₅ )₃ ]. This complex rapidly hydrometallates carbon dioxide and catalyses the selective reduction of CO₂ to the formaldehyde oxidation level at 60 °C in the presence of Et₃ SiH (yielding H₂ C(OSiEt₃ )₂ ). When catalysis is undertaken in the presence of excess B(C₆ F₅ )₃ , appreciable enhancement of activity is observed, with a corresponding reduction in selectivity: the product distribution includes H₂ C(OSiEt₃ )₂ , CH₄ and O(SiEt₃ )₂ . While this system represents proof-of-concept in CO₂ hydrosilylation by a gallium hydride system, the TOF values obtained are relatively modest (max. 10 h^-1 ). This is attributed to the strength of binding of the formatoborate anion to the gallium centre in the catalytic intermediate (^Dipp L)Ga(Ad){OC(H)OB(C₆ F₅ )₃ }, and the correspondingly slow rate of the turnover-limiting hydrosilylation step. In turn, this strength of binding can be related to the relatively high Lewis acidity measured for the [(^Dipp L)Ga(Ad)]⁺ cation (AN=69.8).

Hydrogenation reactions catalyzed by HN(CH2CH2PR2)2-ligated copper complexes

Hydrogenation of aldehydes and ketones can be catalyzed by a PNP-ligated copper hydride that is accessible from the copper borohydride or bromide complex or the copper hydride cluster.

Metal-Ligand Cooperation Facilitates Bond Activation and Catalytic Hydrogenation with Zinc Pincer Complexes

A series of PNP zinc pincer complexes capable of bond activation via aromatization/dearomatization metal–ligand cooperation (MLC) were prepared and characterized. Reversible heterolytic N–H and H–H bond activation by MLC is shown, in which hemilability of the phosphorus linkers plays a key role. Utilizing this zinc pincer system, base-free catalytic hydrogenation of imines and ketones is demonstrated. A detailed mechanistic study supported by computation implicates the key role of MLC in facilitating effective catalysis. This approach offers a new strategy for (de)hydrogenation and other catalytic transformations mediated by zinc and other main group metals.
