A stable dysprosium(iii) complex with a terminal fluoride ligand showing high resolution luminescence and slow magnetic relaxation

Luminescent Er3+ based single molecule magnets with fluorinated alkoxide or aryloxide ligands

We report the synthesis, structures, and magnetic and luminescence properties of a series of new mono- and dinuclear Er3+ complexes derived from sterically demanding aryloxide and fluorinated alkoxide ligands: [4-tBu-2,6-(Ph2CH)2C6H2O]3Er(THF) (1), [(C6F5)3CO]3Er(Me3SiOH) (2), [(C6F5)3CO]3Er[(Me3Si)2NH] (3), [(C6F5)3CO]3Er(C6H5CH3) (4), [(C6F5)3CO]3Er(o-Me2NC6H4CH3) (5) and {[Ph(CF3)2CO]2Er(μ2-OC(CF3)2Ph)}2 (6). In compounds 1, 2, and 4, the Er3+ ion is four-coordinated and adopts a distorted trigonal pyramidal geometry, while in 3, 5, and 6, the coordination geometry of Er3+ is impacted by the presence of several relatively short Er⋯F distances, making them rather 6-coordinated. All compounds behave as field-induced Single Molecule Magnets (SMMs) and exhibit an Er3+ characteristic near infrared (NIR) emission associated with the 4I13/2 → 4I15/2 transition with a remarkably long lifetime going up to 73 μs, which makes them multifunctional luminescent SMMs. The deconvolution of the NIR emission spectra allowed us to provide a direct probe of the crystal field splitting in these compounds, which was correlated with magnetic data.

Ligand Fluorination to Mitigate the Raman Relaxation of DyIII Single-Molecule Magnets: A Combined Terahertz, Far-IR and Vibronic Barrier Model Study

The fast Raman relaxation process via a virtual energy level has become a puzzle for how to chemically engineer single-molecule magnets (SMMs) with better performance. Here, we use the trifluoromethyl group to systematically substitute the methyl groups in the axial position of the parent bis-butoxide pentapyridyl dysprosium(III) SMM. The resulting complexes-[Dy(OL^A )₂ py₅ ][BPh₄ ] (L^A =CH(CF₃ )₂ ^- 1, CH₂ CF₃ ^- 2, CMe₂ CF₃ ^- 3)-show progressively enhanced T_B ^hys (@100 Oe s^-1 ) from 17 K (for 3), 20 K (for 2) to 23 K (for 1). By experimentally identifying the varied under barrier relaxation energy in the 5-500 cm^-1 regime, we are able to identify that the C-F bond related vibration energy of the axial ligand ranging from 200 to 350 cm^-1 is the key variant for this improvement. Thus, this finding not only reveals a correlation between the structure and the Raman process but also provides a paradigm for how to apply the vibronic barrier model to analyze multi-phonon relaxation processes in lanthanide SMMs.

Dinuclear Fluoride Single-Bridged Lanthanoid Complexes as Molecule Magnets: Unprecedented Coupling Constant in a Fluoride-Bridged Gadolinium Compound

A new synthetic method allows isolating fluoride-bridged complexes Bu₄N{[M(3NO₂,5Br-H₃L^1,1,4)]₂(μ-F)} (M = Dy, 1; M = Ho, 2; M = Gd, 3) and Bu₄N{[Dy(3Br,5Cl-H₃L^1,2,4)]₂(μ-F)}·2H₂O, 4·2H₂O. The crystal structures of 1·5CH₃C₆H₅,·2·2H₂O·0.75THF, 3, and 4·2H₂O·2THF show that all of them are dinuclear compounds with linear single fluoride bridges and octacoordinated metal centers. Magnetic susceptibility measurements in the temperature range of 2–300 K reveal that the Gd^III ions in 3 are weakly antiferromagnetically coupled, and this constitutes the first crystallographically and magnetically analyzed gadolinium complex with a fluoride bridge. Variable-temperature magnetization demonstrates a poor magnetocaloric effect for 3. Alternating current magnetic measurements for 1, 2, and 4·2H₂O bring to light that 4·2H₂O is an SMM, 1 shows an SMM-like behavior under a magnetic field of 600 Oe, while 2 does not show relaxation of the magnetization even under an applied magnetic field. In spite of this, 2 is the first fluoride-bridged holmium complex magnetically analyzed. DFT and ab initio calculations support the experimental magnetic results and show that apparently small structural differences between 1 and 4·2H₂O introduce important changes in the dipolar interactions, from antiferromagnetic in 1 to ferromagnetic in 4·2H₂O.

Dinuclear linear fluoride single-bridged Dy^III, Ho^III, and Gd^III complexes are systematically obtained from mononuclear aquo-complexes, with the Dy^III ones showing slow relaxation of the magnetization and the Gd^III one revealing a weak AF coupling through the Gd−F−Gd bridge.

Terminal-fluoride-coordinated air-stable chiral dysprosium single-molecule magnets

Terminal fluoride ligands generate strong magnetic anisotropy in air-stable chiral dysprosium enantiomers supported by a bulky equatorial macrocycle, exhibiting a typical zero-field single-molecule magnet behaviour.

Pseudo-mono-axial ligand fields that support high energy barriers in triangular dodecahedral Dy(iii) single-ion magnets

Air-stable triangular dodecahedral Dy(iii) single-ion magnets with pseudo-mono-axial linear ligand fields exhibit high energy barrier exceeding 600 K, which represent the highest energy barrier for mononuclear SMMs with triangular dodecahedron.
