Near-infrared cyclometalated iridium(iii) complexes with bipolar features for efficient OLEDs via solution-processing

Near-infrared emitting iridium complexes: Molecular design, photophysical properties, and related applications

Organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs) have become popular displays from small screens of wearables to large screens of televisions. In those active-matrix OLED displays, phosphorescent iridium(III) complexes serve as the indispensable green and red emitters because of their high luminous efficiency, excellent color tunability, and high durability. However, in contrast to their brilliant success in the visible region, iridium complexes are still underperforming in the near-infrared (NIR) region, particular in poor luminous efficiency according to the energy gap law. In this review, we first recall the basic theory of phosphorescent iridium complexes and explore their full potential for NIR emission. Next, the recent advances in NIR-emitting iridium complexes are summarized by highlighting design strategies and the structure-properties relationship. Some important implications for controlling photophysical properties are revealed. Moreover, as promising applications, NIR-OLEDs and bio-imaging based on NIR Ir(III) complexes are also presented. Finally, challenges and opportunities for NIR-emitting iridium complexes are envisioned.

First cycloruthenation of 2-alkenylpyridines: synthesis, characterization and properties

Several cyclometalated ruthenium complexes 1-5 with 2-alkenylpyridines as C,N-chelating ligands were synthesized and then characterized by NMR, MS, IR and UV-Vis spectra. According to the single crystal of complex 2, it is evident that carbon from vinyl group is successfully bonded to Ru(ii) center. Moreover, the Ru-N bond trans to the Ru-C bond is elongated (2.127(5) Å), which is consistent with the strong trans effect of the carbon atom compared to that of the nitrogen atom. With different electron-donating groups linked to vinyl, these complexes exhibited regular changes in MLCT absorption bands, which were identified by UV-Vis and CV spectra in combination with DFT and TD-DFT. Interestingly, protonated intermediate species of these complexes in acidic solutions were tracked by the absorption changes and MS spectra, which displayed a possible protonation process of these complexes with the cleavage of Ru-C σ bonds.

Solvent effects on triplet-triplet annihilation upconversion kinetics of perylene with a Bodipy-phenyl-C60 photosensitizer

The solvent effect usually plays an important role in triplet-triplet annihilation (TTA) upconversion processes. In this work, we have studied the TTA upconversion kinetics of perylene with Bodipy-phenyl-C60 as the triplet photosensitizer in five solvents, 1,4-dioxane, dichlorobenzene, chlorobenzene, toluene, and tetrahydrofuran (THF). Although no significant solvent effect was observed in steady-state absorption and fluorescence emission spectra, the overall TTA upconversion quantum yields showed a profound dependence on solvent properties, i.e. 4.9% in 1,4-dioxane, 7.1% in dichlorobenzene, 6.7% in chlorobenzene, 4.6% in toluene, and 2.2% in THF (the maximum of 50%). Each elementary reaction step involved in the overall process was analyzed by applying femtosecond and nanosecond time-resolved transient absorption spectroscopy, revealing that the fluorescence emission of perylene was more significantly affected by the solvents in contrast to the other steps. Moreover, an extra intramolecular energy-transfer pathway of Bodipy-phenyl-C60 was found via the formation of charge-separated states in dichlorobenzene, chlorobenzene, and THF solvents, once being excited. These conclusions provide valuable clues to choose the most favorable solvent for the higher TTA upconversion efficiency in related applications.
